Review for File 9

Listening (Part III: Conversations)

1. Man: Here you can see the Old Post Office building.

Woman: It looks really old. When was it built?

Man: In 1769. No other building in the city is older than that.

2. Woman: So, I heard that you spend all day just saying hello to visitors.

Man: That’s right. Are you jealous?

Woman: No, I just wonder why you get all the easy jobs.

3. Woman: The 2012 movie Dark Shadows is based on an old US TV show from the late 1960s. The main character is a vampire named Barnabas Collins, who is played in the movie by the actor Johnny Depp. On TV, the Barnabas Collins character was played by a Canadian actor, Jonathan Frid.

4. Man: How much coffee have you had today?

Woman: Some, but not much. How many cups have you had?

Man: None, but I’ll take a coffee break soon.

5. Woman: We don’t have anything planned for tomorrow afternoon.

Man: I’d really like to go to the art gallery.

Woman: We won’t see much in only one afternoon, but it’s better than not going.

6. Man: No matter where you travel, be aware that criminals often try to trick tourists. Take, for example, the “ticket trick.” A traveler goes to a bus station to buy a ticket to another city. While they stand in line, somebody comes up and offers to sell them a ticket at a special lower price. The tourist buys the ticket, thinking they got a great deal, but then gets an unpleasant surprise. As they try to board the bus, they find out that the ticket is a fake.

7. Woman: I don’t usually do this, but I got up and left the movie I went to see last night, right in the middle.

Man: Was it really that bad? Why not just sit there until the end?

Woman: All of the jokes were dirty and offensive. I can’t stand crude humor like that.

8. Man: Have you ever seen a professional soccer game?

Woman: Soccer? You mean football? Everyone I know calls it “football.”

Man: Okay. Most of the world calls it football, but I’m from the United States.

9. Woman: Sending things by express mail is different from using normal mail. You’ll have to fill out a form saying what’s in the package and you’ll have to estimate its value. You also need to give the receiver’s phone number in case the courier can’t deliver the package and they need to contact the receiver. Of course, the main advantage is that it’s faster, but it’s also more expensive than normal mail.

10. Man: I lived in Santiago a few years ago, but I then I moved to Puerto Montt.

Woman: That’s strange. I met a guy who says he was your neighbor in Santiago.

Man: Hmmm. I don’t know who you mean. Do you remember his name?
