PRINCIPAL’S REPORT:

Welcome back to Term 3. The weather will start to warm up and before we know it we will be talking about Christmas. We have settled in to the new admin section of the building development. The space, design and functionality is first class and I can not wait for our Year 11 and 12 students to begin Video Conferences in their new facility. These have interactive televisions and the facility will enable greater learning and make those rooms the greatest in the state. We have had our new shade cloth installed onto the fixed equipment, this will be fantastic coming into the summer months. Congratulations to Ken Horley who has been transferred into Yeoval Central School as a full time employee. Mr Horley has done a fantastic job in Science and Agriculture and I look forward to that continuing in the future. Well done to Mr Benn Wright who represented NSW Country Rugby during the holidays. He was part of the successful team that defeated Queensland Country and were crowned Australian Country Champions. He will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in Term 4. It has come to that time of year already where I have to submit anticipated student enrolments for 2016. If you are looking to start Kindergarten next year or know of any other students that may enrol from K – 12, if you could let the office know it would be greatly appreciated

It’s Back – Big Gig 2015

It’s time to dust off the costumes, break out the dance moves and discover the latest talent in YCS. We have commenced our Big Gig preparations for this year amid a flurry of excitement. The theme is ‘I Spy’ and we are well underway with auditions, script writing and song selection. It was very exciting to see that most students in Years 5 – 10 have elected to participate. The student levy has remained unchanged from previous years and is $50 per student. This helps cover the travel and costuming costs. Parents may wish to start paying this off throughout this term. There will also be a cost of $5 for the evening meal at each of the schools we travel to during performances. This will be collected during week 9. The beauty of ‘Big Gig’ is that is very much a whole school community project. If anyone would like to assist with costuming or any aspect of our show, please let me know. Mrs Helen Tremain

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS

On Thursday 16, a group of 34 students along with Mr Wright and Mrs Johnson travelled to Orange view the Kinross musical ‘Little Shop of Horrors’. The Antarctic Vortex made the day especially exciting for all involved with snow in Orange and a number of students experiencing snow for the first time. Once in Orange the students were quickly whisked out of the cold and into the Orange Regional Theatre and were treated to the excellent production for the next 2 hours. The props were amazingly crafted, particularly the plant ‘Audrey II’ and the score was brilliantly produced. After a stop for lunch students returned to school, the students are to be commended on their fantastic behaviour on the day and the fun which was had during the show. In all I hope it has wet the students appetite for performance with Big Gig coming later this term and we look forward to the next performance. Thank you to Mrs Tremain for organising the excursion.

MORRIS NEEDLEMAN MATHEMATICS WORKSHOP

Mrs Bates and I travelled to Parkes High School on Thursday to work with Morris Needleman on preparing for the HSC Mathematics exam. Mrs Bates’ VC class attended the workshop. There were 120 students attending the workshop from a number of High Schools.

Morris Needleman is a high School Mathematics teacher who teachers exclusively extension 2 students in private schools in Sydney. He is a very experienced teacher of mathematics. This is the fourth time he has run the workshop.

He talked about how much study and preparation we should be doing for the trial examinations (half a past paper per day) with support of textbooks first and then leading up to doing papers with timing.

We did activities on how to answer multiple choice questions and practised the skills by completing 2014 HSC multiple choice questions.

We then completed past questions specifically on Logarithms and Exponential Functions as there are always questions on these functions. Morris then went through superannuation and time payments as there is always a question on either of these applications to geometric progressions.

He finished off showing how to approach more difficult type questions.

The day was excellent apart from the facilities being very cold (needed a blanket). The workshop was hands on and I came away feeling more confident about my knowledge of HSC Mathematics.

Mathletics certificates are handed out at weekly assembly. If your child prefers to NOT receive a Mathletics certificate, please let the office staff know. We have been informed that these certificates are not valued by some students and we would prefer not to print these if they are not wanted. Thank you, Office Staff.
