I find challenging times often bring out the best in us and that has certainly been true for The Elisabeth Morrow School and its community this year! We could not have predicted COVID-19 in the fall of 2019 when we welcomed Dr. Maureen Fonseca, our new
Head of School. Or that our campus would close after spring break, and our students would continue their lessons remotely. Or that our annual graduation ceremony would be conducted virtually. And yet, it’s clear that our school and community responded brilliantly, thinking out of the box and quickly coming up with new approaches, while also engaging with the empathy that is a hallmark of our community. I believe we have entered this new school year positioned even better, with stronger bonds across our community, upgraded safety protocols, and even more effective ways of teaching children in this new environment, both in the classroom and remotely.
Through the pandemic, our community showed tenacity and resilience as we set aside our fears and continued to move forward. I am very grateful to the Board of Trustees, school administrators, and faculty and staff who all worked tirelessly to address the pandemic-related challenges, making it possible for the school to continue providing the highest quality education for our students. I also want to thank all the volunteers who gave so generously of their time to help our community.
The Board approved projects for renovations this spring in two divisions. Our fifth- and sixth-grade students in Morrow House are now enjoying better learning spaces, new lockers and bathrooms, and improved music practice rooms. The Board also approved adding a class for 2-year-old students, very much aligned with Elisabeth Morrow’s vision when she opened the first Little School 90 years ago. Renovations began this spring in Chilton House to prepare for the arrival of our newest class of students. Other improvements include enhanced security, upgraded outdoor learning terraces, and COVID-19-related preparations to keep our students safe.
The spring and summer improvements were funded in part by a generous donation of $2 million by Frank and Jean Zhang. This is the largest gift made to The Elisabeth Morrow School in its 90-year history. The Zhang family is building upon our EMS culture of philanthropy by creating a lasting impact for all our children today and for generations to come. Their support this spring also included a lead gift for the EMS Response Fund. This new fund helped students from families financially impacted by the pandemic to continue their EMS education. Even during these difficult times, our community rose to the occasion. Our sincere thanks to the Zhang family and all donors you see listed in the Annual Report for their generosity.
The Board of Trustees is committed to having our campus secure for students, faculty, and staff. We approved more than $400,000 towards COVID-19 preparations. Safety protocols that meet or exceed CDC guidelines were put in place in all three divisions. The Apple Tree Fund helps raise funds that support critical one-time and ongoing expenses, including awnings and portable desks for outdoor learning, Plexiglas classroom barriers, additional laptops, hiring of new faculty for in-class and remote learning, and an endless supply of sanitizer.
The Elisabeth Morrow School is a special pillar of our community. It serves us all by helping prepare our children to thrive in their life journeys. My first year as Head of The Elisabeth Morrow School began with exhilaration and hope. I was so happy to meet our community, shake hands with students
each morning, get to know our talented faculty and staff, and have the privilege to work with a strong and dedicated Board of Trustees. What could be better? We began in January notifying our community about a new international virus that was making news, and by March, it was an unpredictable pandemic that forced us to close our campus on March 10 and begin remote learning after the spring break.
As I reflect back on this time, I am filled with admiration for all the members of the EMS community. Each teacher, staff member, parent, and, most importantly, student showed remarkable resilience over the course of these past six months. We know that the changes to which you’ve had to adjust, and decisions you have had to make have been hard. I am deeply thankful for the hard work, dedication, and collaboration of the faculty and staff. I want to recognize and thank our teachers for their diligent and creative preparations for this new school year. They are indeed brave and courageous first responders in their own right. As we continue to face challenges due to the COVID-19 virus, I am encouraged and assured of our re-entry plan, the result of the extraordinary hard work and dedication of the faculty and leadership team. Together, with the support and guidance we received from the EMS Medical Advisory Committee, we created a stellar re-entry plan. I have never been more proud to be your Head of School. The year ahead may seem daunting to some, but I have every confidence that together we will forge a pathway to continued excellence and growth.
This is a very special year for another reason: We will be celebrating the 90th anniversary of the founding of EMS. We are finalizing details for engaging virtual celebrations in the fall and a virtual gala in February. I look forward to seeing you all at these events as we celebrate “the best of the old and the best of the new.” This anniversary year gives us the chance to look both back and forward, embracing curricular advancements to prepare our students for the job force of the future while holding fast to our core values. Our focus on academic excellence and a passion for learning, character development, and diversity and inclusion remain critical foundational elements of the EMS holistic educational experience.
Despite the challenging times we are in, I am happy to report that we exceeded our fundraising goal for the 2019-2020 school year, thanks to all of you! Our community has always been a strong philanthropic one. We are truly grateful for and rely on your generosity.
Thank you all for your volunteer time and for sharing your resources to help EMS grow from strength to strength. Your generosity and support today enable EMS to shape leaders of tomorrow. I have no doubt that the strength of our EMS family will continue to guide the way for all of us in the year ahead.

The Apple Tree Fund The Apple Tree Fund is the foundation of our fundraising efforts at EMS, and it supplements our annual operating budget. OUR NEW TRUSTEE Candace Van Ness Gonzalez (’94) is both an EMS graduate and parent, having served as both Chilton House Vice President and Class Parent. She has a B.A. from Union College and an MSW from Columbia University. For Candace and her husband, Adriel (’94), EMS has been a central part of life. Candace’s father, William Van Ness, was a former Trustee and Board President at EMS (1987-1994); both of her siblings also attended EMS. This multigenerational and multifaceted perspective has given Candace the fullest possible sense of EMS: as a school, as a family tradition, and as a second home — one she is now sharing with her two children, Camellia ’27 and Theo ’30.

MOLLY ANDERSON FUND The Molly Anderson Fund was established in memory of this wonderful woman who was Miss Chilton’s right hand at Morrow House. The fund provides financial aid for children of faculty members who attend our school.

ED AND NANCY BARR FUND FOR FACULTY DEVELOPMENT Nancy and Ed Barr, parents of Christopher ’88 and Andrew ’91, established this fund in recognition of our excellent teaching staff and to support ongoing faculty development.
ANNE MOLONEY BLACK ’57 ENDOWMENT Anne Moloney Black ’57 established this endowment in 2014 to provide tuition assistance for up to two children. Special consideration will be given to qualified students who have lost a parent. Anne, who lost her own father in World War II, believes EMS’ focus on the joy of learning and the 4 Cs helped form the cornerstones of her life and served her well over the years. She hopes this fund will provide others with a similar experience.

MICHELE BOWER SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT Established in 2013 by the Scherl family, this endowment recognizes the influential role that Mrs. Bower plays in EMS students’ successes. It supports tuition aid.
DARRYL ANNE BURNHAM MEMORIAL FUND The Darryl Anne Burnham Memorial Fund was established by the Burnham family in 1999. It provides annual tuition aid for a fourth-grade student who would otherwise not be able to share in the EMS experience. The school thanks the Burnham family and those who honor Darryl’s memory.

RICHARD A. DAVIES TEACHING ENDOWMENT Established in 1988 to honor former Head of School Richard A. Davies, this endowment provides faculty development funds to foster the values he so cherished: the love of learning, sense of self-worth, and commitment to community.
GLORIA DUNN ENDOWMENT FUND This endowment was established in 2015 through a generous bequest from Gloria Dunn, a beloved and longtime teacher at EMS. This fund will both honor Mrs. Dunn and provide tuition assistance.
GRAHAM-JOHNSON ENDOWMENT FUND Established in 1976 with a donation from an anonymous benefactor, the Graham- Johnson Endowment honors former EMS teachers Susan Graham and Janet Johnson. Miss Johnson was a founding teacher at EMS and is remembered as one of the “pioneers” of the time. She taught nursery for more than 40 years. Miss Graham was appointed in 1930 by the school’s founder, Elisabeth Morrow. She was head kindergarten teacher and Chilton House librarian. She began the “cocoa parties,” a tradition that continues today. On their retirement, Constance Chilton commented, “These two teachers won the admiration and affection of their colleagues through their dedication and talents. Their understanding and skill with 4- and 5-year- old children endeared them to hundreds of students. They will always be held in the highest esteem by all who know them.” This fund appropriately benefits faculty compensation.

MARY HAWKINS MEMORIAL FUND Mary Hawkins was a Chilton House teacher for 24 years and was revered for her dedication to young ones and their education. Her family established this fund in her memory to provide tuition aid for faculty children at EMS.

STEPHEN P. JONES ENDOWMENT FOR FACULTY AND STAFF COMPENSATION Parents, students, faculty, alumni, and friends of former Head of School Stephen P. Jones established this endowment fund upon his retirement. The fund supports faculty and staff compensation.
GEORGE PENNY FUND This endowment fund was established in 2000 to honor sixth- grade teacher George Penny, who taught at EMS from 1981 to 2013. Students referred to Mr. Penny as a friend and an incredible teacher who challenged them through his unique instructional style. This fund provides financial aid for faculty children at EMS.
LEE STARR TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION ENDOWMENT Established in 1999 by the Toback family to celebrate the life of their cousin, Lee Starr, a teacher, this fund provides resources for the school to acquire cutting- edge technology in support of student learning.

The Parents Association promotes the mission of The Elisabeth Morrow School through a partnership with parents, students, faculty, administrators, and the Board of Trustees. Providing a rich menu of parent education and social opportunities throughout the year, the PA fosters a sense of inclusiveness that helps bind our families together and offers a forum for their interests. Further, the PA supports our faculty in the classroom and beyond, demonstrating the deep appreciation of the entire community for their work on behalf of our children.

Dear EMS Community,
What a school year 2019-20 was! While we’ll always remember it for our introduction to remote learning, I am proud to say that the Parents Association worked hard throughout the year in support of the PA’s mission: to build
and strengthen ties within our community, educate and engage parents, show support and gratitude for our faculty and staff, and to give to the school financially.
We organized our traditional events like the Welcome Breakfast and Fall Festival plus an outing to hear Michelle Obama speak. Our Book Fair & Storytelling Festival raised funds for the PA and included workshops for kids, a free performance by world-renowned mime Bill Bowers, and of course, perennial favorites Raffle Table, Cafe and Library Gift Books.
The highlight of the year may well have been the International Food Festival (IFF), which transformed the Gymkhana into a multicultural food bazaar with delicious morsels from more than 20 different regions and engaging, hands-on art activities for the children, an action zone for block-building, and a canned food drive for Center for Food Action. It was also our greenest event ever with composting of food, plates and utensils.
Our four standing committees worked hard throughout the year advancing their missions. Our renamed Equity & Inclusion Committee brought renewed attention from the administration, leading to better integration with the board and faculty groups. The Health & Wellness Committee hosted an informative lecture from a nutritionist and planned a fun yoga and pilates day, and our Community Service Committee once again provided opportunities for our community to give back through their Halloween Costume Drive, Used Book Drive, and All Wrapped Up programs. Our Green Committee had a huge impact on changing mindsets – particularly with composting at the IFF and with the reusable bag drive for the Book Fair.
Our Speaker Series had us rethinking how our own upbringing affects our parenting, while our book club chose some great reads I never would have picked up on my own. The School Store continued to offer chic clothing pieces while raising funds for the school and our class parents continually fielded questions and concerns while disseminating important information to our families. Our Parent Ambassadors helped show the best side of EMS to prospective families and Apple Tree Fund volunteers shared their hearts to get people to dig into their checkbooks. We also created an online forum for parents to exchange helpful and creative ideas, offer recommendations and hand-me-downs, and to get to know one another more deeply.
Then, of course, there’s the in-classroom help, social get-togethers, managing picture days, CH library reading, and LS carline greeting that only happened through the tireless efforts of our engaged parent body. As a result of all this activity, the PA was able to make the following monetary donations to the school:
$15,000 to the Apple Tree Fund $5,000 to the EMS Response Fund $2,500 to the Faculty & Staff Gift Fund $500 was allocated to cover Math League expenses I would be remiss if I didn’t give a huge thank you to last year’s PA Executive Board, committee chairs,
class parents, and volunteers. Without their enthusiasm, involvement, commitment and energy, none of it would have been possible. Everyone that volunteered last year truly played a part in the success of our programs and in making the EMS community the warm, nurturing, dynamic place we value. I’m immensely grateful for all your support.

Book Fair The Book Fair is a major Parents Association fundraiser that brings our community together for author visits, book talks, a faculty tea, and the traditional Kindergarten Flashlight Picnic.
