A Year In Review 2016–2017

A special note of thanks to all who have made contributions to this edition of The PawPrint. The PawPrint is published to highlight the year in review to parents, alumni, donors, and interested families.

Since 1971, Westminster Academy has educated and equipped children as a Christ-honoring, Bible-centered, covenant, college-preparatory school ministry of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church. We are composed of prekindergarten (two-year-olds) through 12th grade with an annual enrollment of approximately 900 students. Our students are prayerfully immersed in Jesus Christ, God’s Truth, and scholarly excellence in all areas of their learning at Westminster Academy.

We prepare our students to be exceptional thinkers, learners, and leaders with a Biblical and scholarly perspective for college and life. Our graduates attend the top-tier universities in the nation including the United States Military Service Academies, UNC at Chapel Hill, Covenant, Duke, University of Florida, Florida State University, Furman, Georgia Tech, Gordon, Harvard, Holy Cross, MIT, Notre Dame, University of Pennsylvania, Princeton, Stanford, Vanderbilt, Vassar, Wake Forest, Wheaton, and Yale.

Westminster Academy is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, Christian Schools of Florida, and The National Council for Private School Accreditation (NCPSA). Westminster Academy is also a candidate school with the Council on Educational Standards and Accountability (CESA).

The Westminster Academy Lower School was recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a 2014 National Blue Ribbon School based on the lower school’s exemplary high academic performance.

WWW.WA.EDU THE PAWPRINT, WESTMINSTER ACADEMY 2016–2017

Dear Westminster Academy Families and Friends,

Since 1971, Westminster Academy has served South Florida’s students and families by providing a school that maintains focus on both academic rigor and faith formation—it is devoted to Christ and dedicated to excellence. On July 1, 2016, my appointment as Westminster Academy’s fourth headmaster began, and it is my privilege to lead our faculty and staff in pursuit of our mission. I am honored to be a part of this community and look forward to God’s faithfulness in the future as we celebrate His good hand during our previous four decades.

The PawPrint depicts the year in review. It is both annual report and display book. Its pages share our collective story and highlight key accomplishments. Even though 2016-2017 represents a season of change, the core values of Westminster Academy remain as guideposts for our work. From inception, Westminster Academy has been vigorously mission-driven, firmly committed to Christian scholarship, and keenly focused on kingdom impact. Those core convictions have not changed and are evident in the pages that follow.

I invite you to join us on a review of 2016-2017, as it was a very good year.

Joel T. Satterly, MA, MBA Headmaster

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. –Romans 12:2a

“Westminster Academy provided its new headmaster, Joel Satterly, with a year headmasters dream about. The school won three state athletic championships (1A boys cross-country, 4A boys basketball, 1A boys track and field). Its high school robotics team won state and regional competitions and lost a close tiebreaker to the second place finisher at the international competition in Houston. Its band, choral, and orchestra programs were honored with the SupportMusic Merit Award from the NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. WA is one of ninety-two schools from across the country and one of only three schools in Florida to receive the prestigious award in 2016–2017.”

The Amazing Pumpkin PatchFall weather came to WA just in time for the Pumpkin Patch! The morning of the Pumpkin Patch, the students woke up to a slight briskness in the air, which added to the excitement of the day to come. The day was filled with fun as the students arrived at school to see their playground turned into a pumpkin patch and the field transformed into a life-sized maze designed by high school students.

The students enjoyed visiting with animals at the petting zoo. The baby goats were a favorite. Time was spent decorating cookies and pumpkins while visiting with friends. The older students spent time navigating the life-sized maze designed by the Geometry Honors students. They also played on the bounce slide and raced through the obstacle course. The day was a huge success thanks to the help of many parents, the PTF, and our corporate sponsors: Benedetti Orthodontics, Fresh Market, and Publix.

ConvocationThe Westminster Academy student body exchanged pleasant greetings on the first day of the 2016–2017 school year as they entered the Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church Sanctuary for Convocation. As a community of believers, it is especially important to gather together at the beginning of the school year to praise God and ask for His blessings over our families, faculty, staff, and the entire school year. The Parent Teacher Fellowship served refreshments in the Kennedy Fellowship Hall as a way of welcoming everyone for the new school year.

Grandparents DayGrandparents love to visit Westminster Academy on our special Grandparents Day! We had a lovely breakfast and were entertained by all of the students. After breakfast, the many grandparents visited their grandchildren’s classes. Each class prepared something special to share with our visitors. Students made little mementos with their grandparents.

Veterans DayWestminster Academy values the unique freedom we have in America, and we are grateful to all those who have served and are serving the armed forces of the United States. Several recent graduates have gone on to serve—many of whom have attended the U.S. Service Academies.

In honor of our veterans, WA held a Veterans Day Assembly for our veterans and families, in

the Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church Sanctuary on Friday, November 11,

during chapel. Many families participated as we thanked

veterans for their service to this great country.

Lower School Robotics ProgramThis past year, Westminster Academy’s FIRST LEGO League robotics team #23808: “Shark-Byte,” competed in their very first practice tournament.

The five Shark-Byte team members spent the first half of their day gaining experience in judging sessions related to robot design, FIRST Core Values, and the Animal Allies theme project. While blindfolded, our team successfully worked together to quickly organize themselves in order of shoe size during the teamwork challenge. In a later judging session, Lucas Greenwood shared our team’s robot design strategy and expertly answered follow-up questions posed by the judges. Stephen Seckinger and William Moreland also helped the team by enthusiastically communicating the problem-solving strategy for the team project to the judges. Finally, Hannah Middleton scored points with the judges when she shared her understanding of the meaning of the FIRST core value of “Gracious Professionalism.”

Each team member also contributed to three successful robot matches. Nicholas Galgano’s expert robot building skills provided the team with a solid and dependable robot during the competition. Stephen worked diligently to write new programs so the team could try new robot tasks. Hannah, William, and Lucas prepared and aligned the robot so it could perform its tasks.

The teamwork demonstrated by Shark-Byte throughout the day was noticed and appreciated by the judges, and earned the team the FIRST LEGO League Core Values Award! The team had a great day working and learning together and put that to good use as they prepared for future tournaments.

Lower School Pinnacle AwardSamuel Joseph is a leader, both on and off the field, whether inside the classroom or at play. He consistently models kindness, respect, and encouragement to others. He loves sports and is currently playing junior varsity basketball for the city of Lighthouse Point, and looking forward to baseball next school year. Samuel loves music and plays both the cello and piano. Recently he was selected to play piano on stage with Dr. Heather Coltman, the dean of the College of Arts and Letters at FAU. In his spare time, he loves to play cards, foosball, Monopoly, dominoes, and tag with his brothers. Despite all of his accomplishments, Samuel is most grateful for having been redeemed by the Savior, Jesus Christ. Samuel has served in his church as a preacher to children, carefully writing his sermons and delivering them well to his audience which includes both children and adults. Samuel loves to read the Bible and says he wants to be known as respectful, confident, and wise and often prays to that end.

National Honor SocietyThe National Honor Society (NHS) members visited the Lauderdale Lakes Alzheimer’s Center to encourage and minister through songs and crafts to older adults who are struggling with Alzheimer’s disease. The NHS also organized and participated in a walk-a-thon that raised over $5,600 for the Center.

Members served as student ambassadors and servers for the lower school Grandparents Day, Harvest Festival, WA Sundays, Senior Awards Night, Back to School Night, Baccalaureate, and Graduation ceremonies.

The NHS conducted four blood drives to help with the community’s emergency blood supply and also raised funds for the Meg Beaupied Memorial Scholarship. The goal was eighty donors, and the year ended with more than one hundred.

Upper SchoolWestminster Academy upper school students are part of a special community where they can discover and develop their gifts and talents for God’s glory. Students are challenged to prepare well for college through rigorous academics such as Advanced Placement (AP) classes and dual-enrollment classes, as well as electives designed to explore interests such as sports medicine, business law, broadcasting, computer science, graphic design, and psychology. All of this and more combine to exemplify “Devoted to Christ, Dedicated to Excellence.”

Chick-fil-A Leader AcademyThe Westminster Academy chapter of the Chick-fil-A Leader Academy had its second successful year, partnering with Rolando Justiniano of the Fort Lauderdale Chick-fil-A location. The year began with a great kick-off event by preparing over 500 meals for the homeless, which were combined with the thousands prepared throughout the country by other chapters. Each month the student-leaders were trained in effective leadership and witnessed great leaders in action.

Through their classroom experience, the students performed self-evaluation exercises in areas of leadership. They also worked through the initial anxiety of public speaking by frequently making brief prepared presentations in front of the class. In December, the group participated in the Leader Academy “Do Good December” project by collecting toys for the children of police officers who were killed in the line of duty.

The Chick-fil-A Leader Academy continued to work through monthly webinars during the second semester. Also, they studied the very popular 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Mr. Jeffrey Shyne, a WA parent and international instructor for the Covey Institute, initiated the discussion by presenting an overview lecture and the benefits of practicing the habits enumerated in the book.

Hour Of Code The Hour of Code involves students in more than 180 countries around the world. It is the first step on a journey to demystify “code” and broaden participation in the field of computer science. It helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic, and creativity.

Middle school students participate by using their iPads and code-specific apps to create algorithms to accomplish project goals. Those who wish to continue with computer science may take courses in high school leading to Advanced Placement Computer Science for potential college credit.

The Hour of Code is supported by the Hour of Code and Computer Science Education Week as well as partners including Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Boys and Girls Clubs of America and the College Board.

Spiritual RetreatsPastor John O’Brien, of the Avenue Church in Delray Beach, Florida, brought a packed message to the high school students over three days in Lake Placid at the annual spiritual retreat. The event began on Sunday evening as the seniors spent the evening together developing deeper relationships with one another and hearing a special message on leadership from senior Bible teacher, Mr. Jominy.

On Monday, the rest of the high school joined the seniors and enjoyed many team-building and grade-level focused activities. Each class designed a class banner under the direction of art teacher, Ms. Fortier. Students had the opportunity to enjoy the climbing wall, zip-line, and water activities on the lake. On the final night, each grade performed a skit they had written under the direction of drama teacher, Mrs. Cox.

The focus of the retreat came from Pastor O’Brien’s messages on “Redemption: Recapturing our hearts to live for God alone.” He spoke from John 7: 37b-38, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” Students noted that the messages were

“right on point” and “aimed at the heart” as he applied God’s Word to everyday challenges in their lives.

Our middle school students enjoyed their own retreats as they drew closer to God and to one another in Christian fellowship.

Pastor O’Brien continued his message during our Spiritual Emphasis Week later in the year. He asked the students how they have been doing since the spiritual retreat. Is Christ living more deeply in their hearts? Have they been making those difficult decisions from the God-honoring perspective of “What would glorify God in this decision?” Many students reflected that this week was a great opportunity to look again at what motivates them as they navigate the daily decisions that could impact them for the rest of their lives.

The week was also an opportunity to participate in break-out sessions presented by a variety of faculty, pastors, and mentors who delivered messages from their hearts to our upper school students. The wide range of topics included “Guarding Your Heart,” “How to Deal with Stress and Anxiety,” “Worth-ship,” “Swimming with Orcas,” and “The War Within My Soul.”

It is our desire that as we take this time each year, our students will reflect and discuss with mentors and family how they can be drawn closer in their walk with Christ.

High School Pinnacle AwardPhilip Barbar earned the respect of his peers and the faculty with his servant style of leadership. He is described by the faculty as kind, hard-working, teachable, and persistent. Several teachers mentioned his exceptional character and integrity. The faculty and administration consider him to be a light on our campus. Philip genuinely cares about his fellow students, teammates, and teachers at WA. He is an encourager and motivator, both in the classroom and on the football and soccer teams. Philip has a servant’s heart evident in his commitment to his school and church worship teams on which he serves.

Homecoming WeekHomecoming Week was an exciting time at Westminster Academy as we celebrated the rich traditions established over four decades. Each day during the week the student council planned themes to add to the fun and celebration. This past Homecoming was split over a few weeks due to Hurricane Matthew. During the scheduled week, students decorated the hallways and celebrated their usual dress-up days.

Then, Hurricane Matthew turned toward Fort Lauderdale cancelling school on Thursday and Friday and delaying the remaining activities.

The festivities resumed in the last week of October with the presentation of the Homecoming Court. The high school students then voted for the 2016 King and Queen. On Friday, the Lions football team took on the Jaguars of Coral Glades High School.

As alumni enjoyed a pre-game BBQ and Athletic Hall of Honor Induction Ceremony, fans celebrated Senior Night, recognizing all of the senior football players, cheerleaders, and band members.

At halftime, the excitement rose for the entrance of the Homecoming Court. Each couple of the Homecoming Court was escorted around the track in convertibles and introduced to the crowd. The announcement of the king and queen brought Zach Ledbetter and Jenna Boland to the 50-yard line as friends and family cheered.

At the conclusion of the homecoming game, which was soundly won by the Lions, the alumni took to the field to challenge the faculty in the annual Alumni vs. Faculty Flag Football game. The usual players took the field, and after a very hard-fought and sometimes comical 40 minutes, the faculty came away victorious.

Winter Court WeekAs the winter months and school activities got back into full swing, excitement at Westminster Academy increased as Winter Court Week approached. The week began with hallway decorations proudly displayed by each class. Each day the students enjoyed their dress-up days, as they celebrated the theme—Seasons.

The senior court was presented at chapel, and the high school students listened intently to each senior interview to decide who would be the King and Queen. On Friday, Spirit Day, the pep rally had everyone fired up for the game against John Carroll on Saturday.

The James F. Lindsay Gymnasium was filled with fans—families, faculty, students, and alumni. The winter court was getting anxious for the halftime festivities. At halftime, the court was introduced to deafening applause and shouts of encouragement as each member of the court was introduced. The resounding silence was a great contrast as the crowd listened to the announcement of the 2017 King, Joshua Kraus, and Queen, Cayla Coningsby.

After the Lions had defeated John Carroll, by a score of 82-34, the faculty and alumni took to the court for their annual Battle on the Boards, for the coveted Lion Trophy. Coach Baker and Coach Hall, with their talented players, fought hard and aggressively. Ultimately the faculty were the victors, much to the chagrin of the alumni and a few of the fans. WA’s headmaster, Mr. Satterly, concluded the evening by praying with all of the players.

a few faced severe consequences for their actions. Cinderella’s Prince thought finding his Cinderella would satisfy, but he soon discovered an emptiness that always longs to be filled. Those of us who have claimed Christ as our Savior strive to find our fulfillment not in wishes and achievement but in bringing glory to God, and the fulfillment from that is enduring.

Our students have outdone themselves this year, approaching this difficult show with a notable level of maturity. We are proud of each of them, and we’re blessed to have worked with such talent.

We would also like to thank our school play title sponsor License to Chill/Rheem Pro Partner.

Into the Woods Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods was not your average musical full of spectacle and dance—it was more of an experience of music, complex characters, and a story that makes one look for the deeper meaning of the world in which we live.

The first act depicted classic fairy tale characters in their typical whimsical world and story—playing the roles of characters from the fantasy stories we all know and love. The second act, however, revealed the much deeper side of the characters, depicting them just as human as any one of us, with deep struggles about their sin natures. Unlike the fairy tales of old, these characters had to face the consequences of their actions.

Some of the musical’s characters learned their lessons, others realized and tried to change, while

BandThe High School Concert Band traveled to Grand Bahama Island in March for what should have been a four-day, three-night performance trip. However, due to rough seas and the cancellation of their return ferry, the band had to extend their stay by an additional day.

While on the island the band performed at:

• The Lucaya Children’s Home, raising the spirits of children who have been removed from their families

• The Lucaya International School, encouraging their school to start their own band program

• The Lucaya Presbyterian Church, as the main entertainment at a fundraiser for hurricane relief

• The Lucaya Market Square, entertaining shoppers and diners in and around the square

• The Viva Fortuna Beach Resort Theater, playing for guests staying at the resort

In addition to their five performances, the band had the opportunity to visit the abandoned set of Pirates of the Caribbean, the Lucaya National Park and Caves, and enjoy the amenities at the Viva Fortuna Beach Resort.

BroadcastingWA Broadcasting students enjoyed an exciting year. Broadcasting I students caught the vision of video production, learning fundamental concepts while gaining hands-on experience in filming, writing, and editing. In Broadcasting II, the weekly WATV news broadcast expanded in its second year of production, adding more feature stories and new segments like Sports with JD, Daisy on the Street, Food Review, and others, all working under tight deadlines. Broadcasting III students wrote, directed, and produced an episodic drama in which they applied film techniques to tell a story. Broadcasting students created many excellent videos that were enjoyed by the entire high school. The year culminated with the Wabby Awards, voted on by the entire high-school student body, and awarded to the top performers in several broadcasting categories.

Praise God for His impact on all of our fine arts students, especially those who will be continuing in the arts at the next level in college.

SupportMusic Merit Award The Westminster Academy Music Department received the SupportMusic Merit Award from the NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) Foundation for our school’s outstanding commitment to music education. WA was one of ninety-two schools nationally and one of only three schools in Florida to receive this distinction.

Yearbook The 2016–17 yearbook theme was Journey. The book reflected upon the Journey as a school, team, individual, and as a Christian. The yearbook included a new feature called Aurasma. This feature allows students to scan their iPhone on certain pages which allows the page to come to life with a video made by broadcasting students. Students enjoyed this new tech feature added to the yearbook.

Cross Country StatesHead Coach Ken Key used the word “hungry” as the characteristic that enabled the Varsity Men’s Cross Country team to do what they did all season, particularly at the state meet that took place on Saturday, November 5, at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee.

Since the start of the season, the Men’s Cross Country team had their eyes set on a state championship, and they accomplished their goal. They finished first in the state as a team in Class 1A while lone senior Patrick Sastre led the way all season and ended up finishing ninth in the state.

It was a well-deserved accomplishment by a dedicated group. Both men’s and ladies’ teams dedicated their early mornings, late evenings, and Saturdays to train and prepare for this season. The hard work continued through the fall up until the State meet. The team looks forward to the future of the program as they continue to grow and hope to make another run at States.

AthleticsJessica Nava Wins States Jessica Nava, State Champion in the 100 fly and 100 back, broke her own Class 1A swimming state record in the 100 fly and her own school record in 100 back—automatic All-American time in both events!

Track & Field StatesThe Varsity Men’s Track team captured the FHSAA Class 1A State Title as senior captain, Patrick Sastre, pulled off one of the closest finishes with a jaw-dropping performance in the 4x400 relay. The strength and determination of the Lions 800m record holder pushed him past the leader down the straightaway for the win and the State Title. The team pulled off its fastest time of the season (3:26.41) for the win. This impressive time placed them fourth on the all-time list for the Westminster Academy track program. Juniors Jonathan Moulton and Nick Rowe ran first and second legs respectively.

Scan the code to the right to see the 4x400 relay along with Patrick Sastre’s memorable finish.

Varsity Basketball StatesSenior center and player of the game, Paul Atkinson, scored 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead Westminster Academy to a 57-43 victory over Providence School of Jacksonville for the Class 4A State Boys Basketball Championship at the Lakeland Center.

Westminster Academy opened up the biggest lead of the first half at 15-9 as part of an 8-0 run. Providence would slowly eat into the deficit and eventually took a 23-21 lead with 1:45 left in the first half. The teams went into the break tied at 23-23.

The Lions built their largest lead of the third quarter with a 6-0 run giving them a 42-35 advantage. It would stay at seven by the end of the quarter at 45-38.

Even though the Providence Stallions led once early in the second half, the Lions sealed their title, ending the game with a 9-0 run.

“This was a group of 15 that bought in all year. This was a group that was destined for this.”

– Coach Ehren Wallhoff

Nearly forty ladies attended this special time of fellowship over a lovely lunch in the Kennedy Fellowship Hall. Mrs. Diane Kanell, mother and grandmother of WA alumni and former school board member, was the guest speaker. She encouraged the mothers with wisdom from God’s Word and used the story of Moses as a reminder that parents must entrust their children to God’s care as they send them off to college. New Parent BreakfastIn September, over sixty new parents gathered for food and fellowship with other new families. Mr. Satterly welcomed new families and the ladies a cappella ensemble performed two beautiful pieces. Guests heard from seniors, Cayla Coningsby and Vince Trombino, as they expressed their gratitude towards WA, which has helped them grow spiritually and academically through all of their courses and extracurricular activities. Mrs. Wood and Mr. Critch shared advice and encouragement to guide parents as their children embarked on their journey at WA.

37th Annual Christmas Boutique & Craft MarketThe 37th Annual Christmas Boutique and Craft Market is a South Florida Christmas tradition the community anticipates to kick off the holiday season. Nearly 90 vendors, including nine students in the Kids’ Korner, set up shop in the Kennedy Fellowship Hall in November. Several booths sold handmade items, and the Bakery Shoppe is always a favorite spot.

The Fine Arts Department provided lunch and hosted a Classic Car Show to raise funds for their trip to the Bahamas. The live performances by the a cappella choir and orchestra students Friday evening added to the holiday atmosphere. Special thanks to our Parent Teacher Fellowship, numerous volunteers, and Christmas Boutique co-chairs, Melissa Scasserra and Ramona Neuman, for all their hard work in organizing this event.

Dads’ Breakfast with Dr. Bob BarnesNearly 100 men attended our 2nd Annual Dads’ Breakfast presented by Collision Care XPress in September. A very special thank you goes to Dr. Bob Barnes for being our guest speaker. We truly appreciate his humor, wisdom, and genuine compassion for God’s people, marriages, and families. Fathers were equipped and encouraged as Dr. Barnes challenged them to lead their families. It was a great morning of fellowship and focusing on the privilege God has given parents to

influence their children.

FINANCIAL OVERVIEW

WWW.WA.EDU THE PAWPRINT, WESTMINSTER ACADEMY 2016–2017

Financial OverviewIn May of 2016, the School Board approved a budget of $12.2 million that reflected mission-driven priorities and was based on realistic enrollment projections. With the implementation of strong internal financial controls and diligent management by the WA leadership team and staff, budgets were not only met but in many instances efficiencies were found, helping to generate a modest surplus for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2017.

The budget surplus enabled the school to address some key infrastructure needs including new roofing, replacement of aging air conditioning units and investments in technology. Additionally, we were able to significantly upgrade our athletic facilities with a new artificial turf field benefiting several sports as well as new tennis courts. Finally,

we were able to set aside funds in a cash reserve which we intend to build over time to a level recommended by most accrediting organizations, and which is consistent with sound financial practices.

More importantly for our school families, the healthy financial status allowed us to make some win-win strategic changes to our tuition and fee structure. The new structure included keeping tuition flat for 2017–2018, implementing a modest capital fee for facility related investments, and reducing student activity fees. The net result for most grade levels was a decrease in the overall cost of attending WA, while at the same time facilitating significant school renovations this summer which were undoubtedly noticed upon returning to school.

Finally, we are pleased to share that all of our operating costs were completely funded by our operating revenue. As a result, all unrestricted giving was directed, dollar for dollar, to fund our financial assistance program designed to assist Christian families who have demonstrated financial need and are unable to afford the full cost of tuition.

We fully appreciate the financial sacrifice required of families to provide their children with a Westminster Academy education, and we are grateful for the opportunity to provide our students with a Christ-centered foundation. We believe the school is well-positioned financially to fulfill our commitment to equip students to excel by using their gifts and talents for God’s glory.

Future Lion OnesieSince 1971, Westminster Academy has been equipping students to go out and make a difference in the world in every sphere of influence. Our graduates go on to start schools and businesses, serve as missionaries and pastors, serve our country, protect us as police and firefighters, and even go on to make a difference in the political realm. They contribute in athletics, the entertainment business, and the medical field. They are innovators, engineers, educators, and serve as community leaders. We are especially blessed when alumni choose to send their children to their alma mater. We currently have nearly 100 students attending WA who are second generation lions and two who are third generation.

Local alumni, email us at [email protected] when you have a baby and we will send you a WA onesie. We would love to see pictures of your little future lion wearing it, so please post a picture to your social media accounts and tag us @wacad and use the hashtag #futurewalion!
