Music is a Science. It is exact, specific, and it demands exact acousƟcs. A conductor’s full score is a chart; a graph which indicates frequencies, intensiƟes, volume changes, melody, and harmony all at once and with the most exact control of Ɵme. Music is MathemaƟcal. It is rhythmically based on the subdivision of Ɵme into fracƟons which must be done instantaneously, not worked out on paper. Music is a Foreign Language. Most of the terms are in Italian, German, or French; and the notaƟon is certainly not English‐but a highly developed kind of shorthand that uses symbols to represent ideas. The semanƟcs of music is the most complete and universal language. Music is History. Music usually reflects the environment and Ɵme of its creaƟon, oŌen even the country and/or ethnic feeling. Music is Physical EducaƟon. It requires fantasƟc coordinaƟon of fingers, hands, arms, lip, cheek, and facial muscles in addiƟon to extraordinary control of the diaphragmaƟc, back, stomach, and chest muscles, which respond instantly to the sound the ear hears and the mind interprets. Music develops insight and demands research. Music is all these things, but most of all, Music is a fine Art. It allows a human being to take all these techniques and apply them to create emoƟon. That is one thing science cannot duplicate; humanism, feeling, and emoƟon. Proudly Presents The L.A. Ainger M.S. Director’s Welcome Welcome to L.A. Ainger’s annual Winter Concert! If you have not attended an Ainger concert before, you are in for a special treat. The students know me as Mr. Ostrow. I have been teaching at Ainger for eleven years and am very proud of our tradition of excellence in student achievement and performance. Ainger is a top performing school that enjoys continued support from the greater Englewood area.

For all guests, we ask that proper audience etiquette is adhered to for the full duration of the program. This includes: please remain seated while a band is performing, no flash photography during a performance, no food or drinks in the auditorium, and please keep applause polite. Please also remember that our young musicians have worked especially hard preparing tonight's performance and that in order to listen, silence is required.

Beginning band members will show off a variety of skills that they have continued to hone over the semester including tone production, blend, articulation, phrasing, and balance. Percussion students are able to perform on mallet instruments and the snare drum and bass drum. The concert tune you will hear tonight has been learned in less than a week! This means that the students have developed the habits of proper practice at home and at school. I would personally like to thank the parents of these students for encouraging your children to practice daily and develop the habits to be a successful young musician!

Intermediate band members this semester have learned to play four major scales and a chromatic scale (the musical alphabet) in order to extend their range and ability to play more difficult literature. They have also learned to read more difficult beat patterns and play in a variety of time signatures which you will hear tonight. Their overall sound, or sonority, has improved with greater understanding of blend and balance. We also have some students learning a second instrument in this ensemble including our bassoonists and saxophonists. We would like to thank members of our jazz band for helping balance the band by siting in with us on this concert performance.

Advanced band members have memorized seven major scales and two chromatic scales, have become adept at performing more advanced and syncopated rhythms, and have worked on developing ensemble blend and balance. Students in this ensemble will demonstrate their ability to listen to each other in performing “A Song for Friends” without a conductor. In November, 30 students in this ensemble auditioned and made the 2017-18 CCPS Middle School Honor Band. They will have a performance in this auditorium on January 6th beginning at 3pm with other outstanding players from across our county.

At the Conclusion:

Beginning and intermediate band students may be picked up in the black box theater, advanced band students may be picked up in the band room, and percussion ensemble students may be picked up at the front of the stage after the stage has been cleared.
