WelcomeThis year’s Conference theme ‘A Whole New World: Unlocking the future of business’ focuses on the redevelopment of senior schooling in Queensland, particularly the subjects of Business, Legal Studies, Accounting and Economics, and the development of engaging and quality junior programs aligned with the National Curriculum.

Through attending the Conference, teachers are offered the opportunity to remain abreast of technological and pedagogical changes in both the business and education sectors and to ensure they are proactive in their preparations for the new system rollout whilst still maintaining inspiring and connected learning to the current system and curriculum content.

Industry ProgramsWe have 11 industry visit programs to choose from, each designed to offer insight, anecdotal learning, excursion inspiration or industry experience to enrich and support the delivery of curriculum. Focus areas of site visits include workplace health and safety at Hinze Dam, running a not-for-profit at RSPCA, behind the scenes at QPAC, sustainability at the Sunshine Coast Solar Farm and many more

Subject matter and content updatesThis stream provides teachers with the access to subject matter and updates on curriculum content to ensure teachers are experts in their fields and maintain the integrity of current systems and subjects.

VET, industry and technology for teachingThis stream provides teachers with the access to industry experts, currency, updates and development to ensure delivery of VET, links to industry and use of technology meet required standards and enhance student experiences.

Sunshine Coast Solar FarmAustralia’s first local government solar farm will offset 100% of Sunshine Coast Council’s electricity consumption and save $22 million (after costs) over a 30-year period. The 57,850 panels will generate 15 megawatts, enough electricity to power 5000 homes. Council will plant 36,000 trees for a 10m green buffer area.

Alek Jacoby Manager Service Operations Alek was Orange Sky’s first ever volunteer Service Manager, and has played a key role in the recent expansion of the organisation across Australia - which now includes 14 laundry vans and three shower vans!

In a full-time position, Alek is responsible for managing regional services across the country and providing volunteers with tools and resources to help friends on the street. He is also completing a Bachelor of Social Work at the Queensland University of Technology.

Alek spends his time rolling out services to new locations, and said the best part of his job is being present when homeless friends use our service for the very first time. Outside of Orange Sky, Alek is an avid musician and has purchased over 100 harmonicas in his life

Some Empirical Evidence Phillipa Greig, Brisbane Girls Grammar SchoolPhillipa is passionate about teaching accounting. Her doctoral study, focused on the Queensland Accounting Curriculum, is testament to this passion. She found that others were equally passionate about teaching accounting.This session will report on research into the Queensland Accounting curriculum which provided in-depth background for the development of the new syllabus. Revealed were stakeholder perceptions of the curriculum; what was valued and not valued about the subject; and also, systemic issues within the current system and their impact on the volatility of numbers in this academic elective subject.Stream: Syllabus Redevelopment

A2 Taking Your Class GlobalKirschty Birt, Sarina SHSKirschty is currently Head of Department (Business IT). She is amazed at how teaching and learning have developed over the 30 years of her career!The new world order requires a whole new way of learning and connecting for which students need to prepare. This presentation offers you options for connecting your students to the broader learning landscape globally and off campus. A3 Unlocking the Junior CurriculumCath Smeeton, Redlands CollegeCath teaches both OP and VET subjects. When not at school she works in their construction business. Having over 20 years’ industry experience as a Financial Controller Cath is passionate about encouraging students to consider a career in business. Junior Business is in the space of “out with the old and in with the new” as we strive to equip our students for business in the senior years of schooling and beyond. In this session I will share some ideas on how you could approach developing a new work programme, including mapping to the content descriptors and achievement standards. This might save you some time and unlock some creative ideas that you could progress for your students. This will lead onto the afternoon session (D2) where a unit of work from this process will be shared with participants.Stream: Subject Matter & Content Updates

A4 VET and Vocational CurrencyKerri Buttery, Velg TrainingKerri Buttery has worked in the VET sector for over 17 years and as a Senior Lead Auditor with QCAA, has authored several Business Education textbooks and has lectured at university.This power session will update teachers on their VET and vocational currency requirements in relation to the Standards for RTOs 2015.Stream: VET, Industry & Technology for Teaching

B2 Financial Literacy in ActionAnne Nunan, Financial Basics FoundationAnne has managed professional learning and resource development at FBF since 2011. Previously she has worked in Queensland as a Sessional Academic at Griffith University and HOD of Business/IT in secondary education.Financial Literacy in Action will showcase free resources that are available for teachers to use within their Business lessons and will highlight how to create an engaging lesson with these resources.Stream: Student Engagement, Quality Assessment & Design

B3 Possible Legal Reform After Child Abuse InquiryProfessor Anthony Gray, USQAnthony was BEAQ President 2002-2013 and was made a BEAQ Life Member in 2014. He was the Director of Schools Education for the Queensland Law Society.The recent Royal Commission discovered large-scale child abuse within educational institutions. This session considers its proposals for law reform.Stream: Subject Matter & Content Updates

B4 VET UpdatesMelanie Alexandra, (QCAA)Melanie Alexandra brings over 20 years of experience working in the VET sector as a teacher of Business and Technology, Curriculum Program Manager, RTO and Compliance Manager and QCAA Senior Lead Auditor. Melanie Alexandra is presenting an overview of the current National VET landscape. Based on the outcomes of QCAA audits undertaken Melanie will be providing information and advice for trainers and assessors of Business and RTO Managers against the Standards for RTOs 2015 and how these impact on Queensland School RTOs. Acknowledgement of RegistrationAttendance is only confirmed upon receipt of payment. You will be notified by email of your registration.

Payment of RegistrationPayment via the secure credit card payment gateway confirms registration.

Payment by direct deposit (pay later) does not confirm your sessions/industry visits until payment is received by BEAQ. Payment must be received within 3 weeks of registering or 7 July at the latest or session preferences may be lost.

Delegates with outstanding registration fees at the time of the Conference will be asked to pay by credit card at registration. This will be the full standard rate plus the late fee of $150.
