Australia live STREAMINGNOISEVENUE: The Stockhause (Theatre 1)TIME: 12pm

A live collaboration between the Dyads Streaming Ensemble atUCLan, and the Aletheia Internet Streaming Ensemble at the WesternAustralian Academy of Performing Arts.

The performance will make use of the Internet lag as a live improvisational tool. You go to a concert.

Half the performers are at the venue, the other half are on the otherside of the WORLD. No one knows what they are going to play, butone thing is for certain: THERE WILL BE NOISE.

The sound, generated by members of Aletheia, will be sent through afront pair of speakers at the Velvet Lounge, Perth and streamed live tothe Media Factory, Preston for the performers in Dyads to improvisearound. The Dyads sound will then be sent back to the Velvet Loungeand routed through the rear pair of speakers, as well as to the mixerfor further processing.

The result will be akin to a performance using a 9083.11-mile tape loopwith an indeterminate and fluctuating speed.

'Musicorum Spiritus' meaning, musical inspirations, is a collaboration of experimentalsounds and music - using vibrations, orchestral instruments, gesturalmusic and other sounds, which are combined and played simultaneously with a pre-composedpiece devised through the use ofmusic technology.

The performance explores howdifferent sounds, methods of composition and music can worktogether harmoniously and melodically, by exploration of instruments and sounds they makeand through the use of musictechnology. Musical gesture is applied within the conventions ofa musical style during the performance, also demonstratingpitch, rhythm, meter and the dynamics, articulation and temporal pacing of musical forms

that convey affective motion, emotion, and agency, by fusing otherwise separate elements, intocontinuities of music.

Composer, Edgard Varèse statedthat the musical alphabet shouldbe enriched, and with this intentionthrough this performance, usingdifferent objects, methods and instruments, to create an effective, emotive piece of music that will, inturn, provide a musical experiencethat will inspire and deepen theaudiences musical awareness towhat is, and can be, music.

ARTIST: Lizzie VinceTITLE: Lizzie VinceVENUE: The Stockhause (Theatre 1)TIME: 9pm

Lizzie's performance of her piece 'Sonant' at last year’s Future Soundwas an outstanding moment of the festival, which earned her the 2013Creative Focus Award for Performance. Her work has explored thepossibilities created by the use of technology alongside the voice andconsiders factors such as pronunciation, phrasing, processing, melodyand harmony.

This year Lizzie offers a collection of pieces that explore the diversityof two very different sound sources. The voice, which is natural andorganic, and technology, which is programmed to create sound. Bothare extremely diverse in their uses but equally both have their ownlimitations. This set seeks to create atmosphere by exploring the uniqueness of the two whilst also demonstrating how together theycan merge to create an array of textural and harmonic possibilities.

In this composition, I wanted to look at how music and visual imageryfrom the periods 1950-60 could contain triggers that have an effect on the viewer's memories and emotions. The reason I have chosen thisperiod is because of the demographic range afforded by this sample. The purpose of the piece Psychedelia was to bring together acousticand electronic sound, by combining a series of memories in sonic formusing visual cues to further enhance the viewer’s experience.

HEADLINER: Matthew Bourne

PRESENTS: Montauk Variations and the Bourne Synthesiser Show (analogue synthesisers)

Matthew Bourne’s music goes beyond the boundaries of improvisedmusic and is something that is rare and exceptional. Throughout the last decade Bourne’s particular stamp of individuality and virtuosity, combined with an uncanny ability to communicate with his audiences, has attracted commissions from major festivals and organisations towrite and produce large-scale projects.

Tonight’s concert presents two widely-differing aspects of Bourne’s creativity. The first half will showcase acoustic improvisations from hisacclaimed solo piano album, Montauk Variations. The second half of theconcert sees Bourne’s use of vintage synthesisers.

TITLE: Montauk VariationVENUE: Harry’s Partch (Main Theatre)TIME: 9pm

For the best part of a decade, Bourne has produced a body of highly original solo pianoworks characterised by the use of wide-rangingtechniques combined with audio samples from diverse media. With Montauk Variations,Bourne has reinvented his approach by stripping away the clutter and quirkiness characteristic of previous work; where fragility and romanticism have now become key focal elements in highly personal performances that stillcarry the Bourne hallmarks of unpredictability, intensity and ellipticism.

The title of this project is homage to the pioneering work of AnnettePeacock and Paul Bley (as The Bley/Peacock Synthesiser Show). The Bourne Synthesiser Show, as its name suggests, is a solo showusing only vintage analogue synthesizers – including the legendaryMemorymoog analogue synthesiser (as modified by Rudi Linhard’sLAMM modification), with other selected Moog and Korg analoguekeyboards.

Expect a sonic journey through voltage-controlled circuits, ear-splittingfrequencies, and passages reminiscent of John Carpenter-esque 80ssoundtracks and the unmistakable warmth and bass that only voltage-controlled oscillators can produce.
