A week in the life of

Thank you to the parents who took the time to talk to me about this at the recent parent meetings. As advised this change was origi-nally made due to the vast majority of par-ents requesting this to happen from a com-munication questionnaire. From some feed-back I have had it seems that now the changes have been made, the preferred method is via the newsletter. Another com-munication questionnaire will be issued in due course. I would encourage you to com-plete it to make your views known.
Safeguarding
In the last couple of weeks, I have had discussions with
parents and children about behaviour at the bus stop and
on the bus. All children should expect to feel safe when
travelling on the bus and it appears that there is some poor
behaviour by a small minority that is threatening safety. I
have been in touch with North Lincs Council Transport de-
partment, and if your child travels on the bus, you will be
receiving a letter from Laura Chadbourne regarding expected
behaviour. You can also download the code of conduct in
terms of behaviour from the North Lincs transport website.
It clearly states that behaviour at the bus stop is the re-
sponsibility of parents. Unfortunately, I have no jurisdiction
over what happens on the bus, I can only reiterate behav-
iour expectations. Ms Chadbourne does however and will
be issuing you all with her contact details to report any
future incidents. As always, I am willing to listen to any
concerns and do what I can to support.

Thank you to all parents that attended the parents meetings this week. I am
sure you are all really proud of what your children have achieved, I know we
certainly are. For the very small number of parents who haven't yet made a
appointment to see your child's class teacher, can you please do so as soon
as possible. It is really important that we keep you up to date with how your
child is progressing in all areas .
We had some very exciting news this week. Our year 5 and 6 children have
been chosen as 1 of 12 schools in the whole country to judge the Blue Peter
Book Awards. They will all be issued with their books today and will be mak-
ing a judgement on their favourite fiction and favourite non fiction book.

Class 2
History Galore!
In class 2 this week, we have learned about historical events and
people, and why they are significant for British life.
On Monday, I was delighted to speak to most parents and hope
you enjoyed seeing how much fantastic work your child has pro-
duced in a few weeks. During the afternoon with Mrs Grey, the
children thoroughly enjoyed learning about Guy Fawkes and we
were both absolutely delighted by the fact files of his life, which
were produced. On Tuesday, we looked at a range of different
sources, both historical and modern, to support further statements
about Guy Fawkes’ life. In the afternoon during their art lesson,
the children used a range of media to create their bonfire pictures.
We have some fabulous personal expressions using pastels, paint
and the computer. On Wednesday, the children learned more
about the significance of Remembrance Day and that it is 100
years since the first Remembrance Day. Hopefully next week,
(weather permitting!) we will go to the cenotaph in Worlaby and
view the poppy wreaths.
On Thursday and Friday we have talked about the heroes of war
and all the different military people. We discussed the unpleasant
life the soldiers faced who fought in World War 1. The children
tried to imagine life in the trenches and the home comforts they
would like if they were away from home.
Alongside our historical discoveries, the children have made obser-
vations of what is happening to our plants, weather and daylight as
we progress towards the end of autumn. The children were
amazed to compare the trees in the playground now and a month
ago.
In year 2 spelling lessons, the children have learned that some
verbs are irregular in the past tense. They could identify error
words in a passage such as runned, seeed, drived and eated to
name just a few. They realised we actually say: ran, saw, drove
and ate. Some children still say some of these words incorrectly
such as: ‘I putted’, ‘I catched’ and ‘I drinked’ to share a few, so
please support your child with the correct tense if they use these in
error.
In year 1 phonics the children have found out that ‘aw’ makes an
‘or’ sound such as in saw, claw, law, jaw and ‘wh’ (most common-
ly) makes a ‘w’ sound such as when, which, whip. (Sometimes ‘wh’
can make a ‘h’ sound like in who, whole.)
In maths, we have learned new strategies for adding: Year 2 using
objects and partitioning for double digit numbers and year 1 put-
ting the largest number in our heads first, then counting on.
We had great fun in our PE lesson using our throwing and catching
skills in a game of benchball. The winners every time were the red
team, which were the Year 2 children who signed up for their first
school tournament next week. Well-done and good luck next week
to Oscar, Kelly, Lottie, Erin, Molly and Porsha.

Class 1
We have had a hectic week this week packing in lots of
new information about important dates. Our mini theme
this week has been Bonfire Night and we have explored
this across our curriculum. We learnt about the history of
Bonfire Night and of Guy Fawkes’ gunpowder plot. We
have created firework pictures using chalk, glitter and
sequins in Art. For our enhanced provision we have made
playdough fireworks with pipe cleaners, sequins and
matchsticks, and painted fireworks in the tuff tray too. We
have read a Bonfire Night poem in our English lessons and
discussed onomatopoeia (words that sound like a sound,
e.g. bang, whoosh, fizz). We even created our own poem
using our senses to describe our experiences of Bonfire
Night.
In PE this week we developed our jumping and hopping
skills, learning how to give power to the take off our
jumps and how to land properly too. We have now fin-
ished our movement sessions and next week we will begin
our body management sessions, learning to control our
bodies in different ways.
In Maths we explored numbers 4, 5 and 6. These num-
bers were a little trickier to write than the previous num-
bers. Some practise at home would be a great boost for
all of the children. We talk about how all numbers start at
the top, unlike the letters which we start on the line.
In Phonics we have been practising our blending and it
has been great to see the progress in the children’s read-
ing. We will recap phase 2 sounds and practise blending
and segmenting for another week before beginning our
Phase 3 sounds. The tricky word recognition has been
great too.
On Friday afternoon we learnt about Remembrance Day
and the services that will be held across the country on
Sunday. We learnt what the day of remembrance was for,
and the reason we use poppies as a symbol of remem-
brance. We will have an assembly about this on Monday
too and observe the 2 minute silence.

Class 3
This week in Class 3 the children have continued their investiga-
tions about the three different states of matter in our Science
lessons. The children each created their own poster/ PowerPoint
Quiz using their knowledge about the different properties each
state possesses, and they drew pictorial examples of each state
too, to show their understanding.
Next week we have a very exciting week as we are going to carry
out our own experiment on Wednesday, looking at the heating
and cooling temperatures from a range of items. In particular, the
children will be measuring the rate at which different types of
chocolate melts and recording the temperature throughout the
experiment. The children will be creating their own predictions,
method and then conclusion after the experiment, using scientific
vocabulary to ensure that their work is both clear and accurate to
other readers. The children will also be creating their own glossa-
ry so that they can refer to the vocabulary in future lessons.
I have been very impressed with the independence from the ma-
jority of Class 3 this week. In the classroom we have ‘Year 3 and
4 Fact file’s’ and the children have used these to support their
own learning as well as their own books in both English and Sci-
ence. I hope to see this independence continue as we enter the
next week. We are encouraging the children to take responsibility
for their own learning and use resources in the classroom availa-
ble to them, rather than relying solely on adult support.
The children have also completed an advert competition this
week, alongside Class 4. Their brief was to choose from 3 differ-
ent companies, each asking for different elements to the adver-
tisement. I was impressed to see the creativity in our children and
how hard they worked in order to meet the criteria set out to
them. The deadline is Monday and I’m sure we will hear about the
successful candidate soon! Well done to the children who really
took care with their design and who weren’t afraid to produce
something that was bright and bold.
In Talk For Writing this week the children have continued to work
on their character descriptions of either Mr Stink, Gangsta Granny
or Ben. We have been working very hard to encourage the chil-
dren to use higher level vocabulary from the modelled text and
use thesauruses to up level their own word choices. After marking
their work from our shared writing lessons, I am pleased to see
that the children are ambitious with their vocabulary choices. I am
looking forward to marking their hot writes next week!
Thank you for your continued support with making sure that your
child reads at least 4 times within the week. Last week we only
had 2 children who didn’t bring in their reading record which is a
huge improvement. I hope to see this improve even further and
we maintain this to achieve 100% and win the class reading cup!
Just a reminder that the four reads should be from the coloured
level reading book and these should be signed by an adult. Any
other text that you read with your child can also be recorded in
reading records as this will show Mrs Britcliffe and I the range of
texts that your child has access to.
Class 4
This week, we have entered a competition run by the Scun-thorpe Telegraph. Some local companies have asked school children to create an advertisement poster for their organi-sation or an event they are promoting. The companies were DFDS who ship Christmas trees to Europe and transport the Trafalgar Square tree to London, The Saucy Fish Co who promote easy meals in minutes and the Chil-dren’s University who promote jobs within the NHS.
The children worked very hard on their independent post-ers and some of the designs were particularly striking and innovative. George spent a long time making sure that his Christmas tree looked appropriately decorated and Alice and Erin chose suitable borders and snowmen to add to the design brief. There were too many excellent examples to choose from, so good luck to everyone.
Our class has also been chosen to take part in the Blue Peter Book Awards whereby the three best fiction books and three best factual books have been selected by a panel of judges and the children will read and rate the books to help to determine the winner. They will also get to keep these books, so this is a great opportunity to be part of the discovery of great books released recently. The children are very excited about this and will have their first two books this weekend.
In maths, we have looked at division. We have mastered short division and with a little support, we are able to tack-le long division. This is traditionally a tricky skill to master and requires a sound understanding of all of the four oper-ations in order for it to be successful. Well done for sticking with it until it made sense!
In writing, we have looked at an emotional letter written by a character from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The idea is to write our own letters as Edmund next week, but we need to turn our words into an emotional response from the reader. There are a number of ways in which this can be achieved, and we have asked Edmund vital ques-tions to understand his motivation and try to work through his current mindset as he understands his betrayal of his family and how he’d never tease Lucy again. We also un-derstood how a semi-colon separates two main clauses and we practised how to use them in our writing to up-level sentences and show more control as a writer.
In reading, we discussed the way in which someone in au-thority can use their voice in different ways to control or manipulate prisoners in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and The Giant’s Necklace has been analysed and we were able to pinpoint the exact moment when Cherry may have become a ghost. Year 5 children will start a brand-new book next week: Street Child.

A big thankyou to everyone who helped to make our bonfire night such a success. The fireworks were spectacular, the fire was fantastic and the burgers and hotdogs were excellent thanks to Peter, Carol, Ha-zel & Andrew. Thankyou to everyone who baked parkin, gingerbread & cookies and to the ladies who helped serve them. We all had a great night and hope that everyone who attend-ed enjoyed the event. Please be aware that a local Town Council have received several calls today from residents say-ing that a male called “Dave” or “George” is ringing on behalf of the council and is either telling them that they are due a Council tax re-fund or have underpaid and need to pay the difference (the figures that have been quoted to residents are approx. £80- £100) The male is then asking for bank details to make the refund or to take a payment for what is owed. This is a SCAM, please do not give any bank /personal details to this male who can become abusive on the phone if he is chal-lenged. If you have any concerns then please call into the Council offices or report to Action Fraud or 0300 123 2040
