A Walk Thru The Bible

Outline of The Book of Daniel

● The Book of Daniel along with the Book of Revelation, marvelously

unfolds future events as God has ordained them in the program of history.


● These two books, one from the Old and one from the New Testament, remarkably complement each other

in their symmetry and harmony.

1. The Book of Revelation explains the Book of Daniel.


2. The Book of Daniel lays the basis

for the Book of Revelation.

3. If you want to know God’s program

for the future, it is essential that you understand the Book of Daniel.


● The Book of Daniel is in two halves: the first six chapters are historical,

which deal with the adventures and career of this remarkable man.


● The second six chapters are prophecy; in fact, among the most astonishing in the entire Bible.

● Daniel is the most authenticated

book of the Old Testament. It has been attacked because of its remarkable prophecies.


● God has taken two precautions in

this matter of unveiling the future.

1. He has clothed these prophetic passages in symbolic language.


2. He has given them to us in figurative form. This is why in these

prophetic books unusual things appear, strange beasts with many different heads and horns sticking out here and there.


3. In the Book of Revelation you have strange beasts with strange combinations of characteristics.

● You just can’t sit down with the book of Daniel and the book of Revelation and read them through and

understand them as you would a novel.


1. You have to study them, taking the whole of the Bible to interpret the symbols in the books of Daniel and Revelation.

2. This is one of the locks that God has provided to keep curious minds from getting into these books without an

adequate background in scripture.


3. God’s program for the future is hidden from us until we spend time

understanding the signs, and these books are full of signs!

● A second precaution God has taken in Daniel, and even more in the book of Revelation, is that he doesn’t

introduce the prophetic section first.


1. He brings us through six chapters

into an understanding of the moral character he requires of the reader before the prophetic program can begin to make sense.


2. In other words, you can’t understand the last section of Daniel unless you have lived through and understood

what is involved in the first six chapters.


● Daniel and his friends were just teenagers when they were first

taken captive and carried off to Babylon.


1. The book records in these first six chapters the pressure they

underwent as they stood for their

faith in the midst of these difficult surroundings.


● One of the first things that the Babylonians did was to change Daniels’ and his friends names.

1. Daniel whose name means “God is my judge” was changed to Belteshazzar which means “prince

of Baal”.


2. Hananiah means “beloved of the Lord” was changed to Shadrach which means “illumined by the sun- god”.


3. Mishael which means “who is God” was named Meshech which means “who is like the moon-god”.

4. Azariah which means “the Lord is

my help” was changed to Abednego, “servant of Nego” or “shining fire”.


5. Their faith has certain dietary restrictions, and the vary things that they were told not to eat are

the things that are required of them to eat as prisoners.


6. The young men stand fast despite

the pressure and God honors them. They are exalted and given positions of authority and responsibility in that kingdom.


● In Chapter 2 Nebuchadnezzar had

a dream of a great image of a man with a strange body.

1. Nebuchadnezzar put his astrologers

to the test and wanted them to tell

him what he had dreamed.


2. The image had a head of gold, arms and chest of silver, belly and thighs

of brass, legs of iron, and the feet were iron mixed with clay.


3. Daniel not only told the king what

he had dreamed, he gave him the interpretation.

a. The gold head was Babylon.

b. The silver represented an

empire that would follow them-the Persian Empire.


c. The Persian Empire would be succeeded by the Greek Empire.

d. The Greeks would be

succeeded by the Roman Empire, but in two phases.


e. A stone cut without hands struck the image at the feet,

disintegrating it, and the stone grew to become a mountain that filled the whole earth.


4. Daniel told Nebuchadnezzar the dream was about the end times.


● From chapters 2 through 7, the language of the original changes

from Hebrew to Aramaic, the Gentile language of that day.

1. After this there is a window in the Scripture that is very unique.


2. Generally the Bible talks about

history past, present and future through the lens of Israel.

3. But here is one place in Scripture where we get a profile of all Gentile history; from Babylon to the end.


a. Babylon is captured by the Persians.

b. The Persians are conquered by the Greeks.


c. The Greeks are conquered by the Romans.

d. The Roman Empire disintegrated into separate elements about 476 A.D.


● Chapters 2-7, describe the “times of the Gentiles” which start with

Nebuchadnezzar and end with a

final world leader who will be dealt with by Jesus Christ at His Second Coming.


● In chapter 3 you have the story of

the fiery furnace.

1. The king’s dream has gone to his head and he has a huge image erected and all are instructed to bow down to it.

2. The image was 60 cubits high that makes it about 90 feet tall.


3. A great furnace is built and the

people are told that is where they will end up if they don’t bow

down to the image.

4. Daniel and his 3 friends refused to bow down to the image and were thrown in the furnace.


5. Nebuchadnezzar looks in the

furnace and sees 4 men not 3, walking around in the fire unhurt.

6. The king praises the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego.


● Chapter 4 Nebuchadnezzar has another weird dream.

1. The king dreams a huge tree was

cut down for seven years.

2. Daniel interpreted the dream and warned the king to repent of his pride.


3. Exactly one year later Nebuchadnezzar was stricken with

a mental illness that lasted 7 years.

4. When he recovered he told his

whole story in chapter 4.


5. He acknowledged that the God of Daniel is the God of the universe

and published his personal

testimony throughout his kingdom.


● By the time we get to chapter 5 Nebuchadnezzar has died, and his son Belshazzar was in charge.

1. Babylon was under attack by the Persians, but Babylon was thought to be impregnable.


2. Instead of preparing for a siege, Belshazzar threw a party and used all the Jewish Temple vessels they had taken seventy years earlier as party vessels.


3. When the party was in full swing,

they saw the fingers of a man’s hand write on the wall.

4. The words were: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.


5. Daniel interprets the words for the king.

a. MENE: God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it.


b. TEKEL: You have been weighed in the balance, and found wanting.

c. PERES: Your kingdom has

been divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.


6. That very night Belshazzar was

slain and Darius the Mede received the kingdom.


● In chapter 6 we have the story of

the lion’s den.

1. Daniel had advanced in age and

was now around 83 years old.


2. King Darius had promoted Daniel over the usual Astrologers and advisors to the king. This did not set well with the kings regulars.


3. They developed a plot to dispose of Daniel by having the king sign a

decree prohibiting anyone from partitioning God for a period of 30 days or be thrown in the lion’s den.


4. The king not realizing how the

decree would affect Daniel was obligated to impose the penalty on

Daniel for worshipping God.


5. God had shut the mouths of the

Lions and the next morning the king found Daniel alive.

6. The tables were turned on the accusers and they were fed to the lions.


● Daniel chapter 7 is the beginning of the prophecies.

1. Daniel had a dream about 4 great beasts coming out of the sea, each different from the other.


a. The first was like a lion, and

had eagles wings.

b. The second beast was like a bear, and had 3 ribs in its mouth between its teeth.


c. The third was like a leopard, which had on its back four wings of a bird. The beast also had 4 heads.


d. The forth beast was dreadful

and terrible, exceedingly strong. It had huge iron teeth.

It also had 10 horns, there was a little one coming up

among them.


e. Three of the first horns were plucked out by the roots. And

in this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking pompous words.


● Both visions- the dream in chapter

2 and the visions in chapter 7 portray the same series of four empires, the forth in two phases.


1. That is why scholars have been anticipating a revival of the Roman Empire, and the emergence of a European Super State.


● Daniel chapter 8 you see the movement of Western history.

1. In this vision Daniel saw a ram and

a goat, and the ram which was very powerful, was defeated by the goat

attacking him from the west.


2. It was the Greek Empire against the Persian Empire. The notable horn of the goat breaks into four horns.

3. There is also a little horn that has a very key role at the end.


4. Daniel interpreted that as a leader from the west (which turned out to

be Alexander the Great) would subdue the Medo-Persian Empire.


5. This is so vivid that when Alexander entered Jerusalem, the high priest showed him the writings of Daniel

and he recognized his own career being prophesied and spared the

city.


● It is interesting that the notable horn breaks into four.

1. On his death bed Alexander was asked who would get the empire, he said give it to the strong. His four generals divided it.


a. Cassander took Macedonia

and Greece.

b. Lysimacus took Thrace, Bithynia, and most of Asia Minor.

c. Ptolemy took Egypt, Cyrene,

and Arabia Petraea.


d. Seleucus took Syria and all the lands east to India.

● Ptolemy and Seleucus are the ones we are concerned with in Bible

history.


1. Israel was the buffer state between continual tensions between Ptolemy of Egypt and the Seleucid Empire.


2. One of those leaders portrayed as the little horn is Antiochus Epiphanes whose desecration of the Temple led to the Macabbean revolt and its rededication is celebrated as Hanukkah.


● Daniel chapter 9 - - the most astonishing passage in the Bible!!

1. The first nineteen verses of chapter

9 are Daniel’s prayer.


2. Daniel knew from the prophecies

of Jeremiah that the 70 years of captivity are about over, so he

prayed over the whole situation.


3. The prayer is so intense that even in the translation you can feel him tremble. But he gets interrupted

by Gabriel and the angel gives him a four verse prophecy that has no

equal in the entire Scripture.

Daniel 9:24-27.

a. Verse 24. Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and thy holy city to finish the transgression, and to make an end to sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.


b. Verse 25. Know therefore and

understand, that from the going forth

of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.


c. Verse 26. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not

for himself; and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall

be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.


d. Verse 27. And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week; and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.


● These are the so-called “Seventy Weeks of Daniel” They are weeks

of years.

● This is the timetable of prophecy concerning the nation Israel. It gives us the principle that is called the

great parenthesis.


● God has interrupted his program for Israel and has inserted between

the first and second coming of the Lord the present age in which we

live.


● This indeterminate period, which

has now spanned more than 2000 years, comes between the sixty-ninth and the seventieth week of the prophecy.


● The seventieth week, a week of

years is yet to be fulfilled for Israel.

1. The first of the four verses are the scope of the whole prophecy.


2. Then we encounter sixty-nine weeks of years, and then an interval before the seventieth week.

3. The last of the four verses is the final week of the “seventy weeks”.


4. The sixty-nine weeks end in verse

25. Verse 26 between 25 and 27 details events that occur after the sixty-ninth but before the seventieth week.


5. The scope of these passages have not been completed yet.

a. We have not finished transgressing.

b. We have not made an end of sins.


c. We have not brought in everlasting righteousness.

d. The focus of this prophecy is specifically Jewish.

e. Seventy sevens are determined upon thy people in the Holy City.


● Then Gabriel gave Daniel a mathematical prophecy; the

sixty-nine weeks of verse 25.

1. The starting point was the commandment to restore and

rebuild Jerusalem.


2. Nehemiah obtained the authority to rebuild the city from Artaerxes Longimanus on March 14, 445 B.C. That was the trigger.


3. When Jesus rode the donkey down the Mount of Olives and the

disciples were proclaiming Jesus as King, fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9, This event occurred

on April 6, 32 A.D.


4. This date turns out to be 173,880 days from the decree to rebuild Jerusalem. (sixty-nine weeks or 483 years equals 173,880 days).


● We have looked at verse 25 (the sixty-nine weeks, seven plus sixty- two); verse 27 is the seventieth

week, yet future. Verse 26 is an interval at the end of the sixty-two weeks.


1. Prior to the seventieth week two events occur; the Messiah will be cut off (Karat, executed) and the city and the sanctuary will be destroyed.


a. Jerusalem was destroyed in 70 A.D. by Titus Vespasian and his legions. Someone torched the Temple and they took it apart to recover all the gold.


So Bro. Bill what is missing before the 70th week of Daniel

can start?


Not Much!!

The Jews need a new Temple


2. The seventieth week of Daniel is started when the anti-Christ confirms a covenant with Israel for seven years. He will cause sacrifices in the Temple to cease, and he will commit an abomination there. He will establish an idol in the Holy of Holies.


3. The last half of the seven years is what Christ called “The Great

Tribulation”.

Note: These years are 360 day years and the Tribulation will be 42 months.


● Something that is worth noting is

that this “seventy-sevens” is the

forth 490 year period in Israel’s history.

1. From Abraham to the Exodus was 505 years. Subtract 15 years of Ishmael then you have 490 years.


2. From Exodus to the Temple is 601 years. Subtract the 111 years of six servitudes in Judges, and you get

490 years.

3. From the Temple to the decree of Artaxerxes is 560 years. Subtract the 70 years of captivity you get 490 years.


4. The seventieth week adds seven to the sixty-two totaling again, 490 years.


● In a sense Israel’s timepiece has been stopped; it was stopped by Christ in Luke 19.

● Daniel chapter 10 is a very strange but provocative chapter.


1. Daniel has fasted for 21 days, and

at the end of the fast an angel appears who apparently had been dispatched 21 days earlier.

2. For 21 days the angel has been withstood by someone called “the Prince of the Kingdom of Persia”. A demonic presence.


3. The angel was fighting the demon

for 21 days until Michael came to

join him. Michael is called “The Chief Prince”.

4. The angel tells Daniel as soon as he gives the visions, he must return and deal with the Prince of the Power of Greece.


5. He gives Daniel the visions of Daniel 11 and 12. It’s interesting that he has to battle the Prince of Power of

Greece since the Greek Empire was still 2 centuries away.


● Chapters 11 is one of the most remarkable chapters in the Bible in that it records prophecy that, for the most part has been fulfilled in detail.


1. They include a detailed profile of the subsequent kings of both the

Seleucid and the Ptolemaic

dynasties that are fighting with each other over several centuries.


2. The chapters also include a rather detailed series of glimpses regarding the final world ruler who will prevail until the end, interrupted by the Second Coming of Christ.


3. Here begins a passage that deals with the 70th week of Daniel that is

yet to be fulfilled.

4. This passage predicts an invasion of Palestine and a counter—

invasion from Egypt in the south.


5. Then the meeting of those two great armies in the land of Israel and the ultimate destruction of those armies there on the mountains of

Israel.


6. This is also clearly described in the thirty-eighth and thirty-ninth chapters of Ezekiel and the second chapter of Joel.

● Chapter 12 introduces the greatest event of history yet to be fulfilled.


1. The angel tells Daniel: At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time; but at that time your people shall be delivered, every one whose name shall be found written in the book. (Daniel 12:1).


2. This is followed by a resurrection: And many who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to

everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

(Daniel 12:2).


3. And the final judgment of God: And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever. (Daniel 12:3)


4. Daniel is given a sign of when this will occur: But you, Daniel,

shut up the words, and seal the book, until the time of the end.

Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.

(Daniel 12:4).
