a visit to the plant

A visit to the plant A: I’m amazed at how you can keep your plant floor always so clean. What’s the secret? B: No secret, really. We only make sure we have it cleaned every two hours or so. We have a stand by cleaner and we do believe it’s important to keep it nice and clean at all times. It makes people feel better about their workplace and therefore, more productive. A: You have a point there. I agree completely. I’ve also noticed that all your plant workers are wearing earplugs and goggles. I visited many plants before and I can tell you. It’s not always easy to get them to wear safety equipment. B: I know that from experience. We had to run many safety measure workshops before we could instill in our workers the importance of always making use of safety equipment. A: Yeah, training is definately the key to success. I’ve always believed that. So, at present, you have two shifts, right? B: We’ve been able to meet the demand for our products with two shifts so far. But we might need to implement another one soon if demand keeps increasing. A: Great! And how often do you have to shut down for maintenance? B: About once a week. Usually on a Saturday, when most of our machines are idle. A: Sounds good. Tell me, what’s the turnover rate with the people in the plant? B: About 10% now. It used to be higher. But we have been a lot more careful when hiring people now, and that’s helped us reduce the turnover rate at the plant greatly. A: I see. Do you have a problem with people calling in sick very frequently? B: Not really. Absenteeism rate is actually on the way down. I guess our plant people are a lot more conscious about the crucial role they play here. They will only call in sick when they aren’t fit for work.
