From the editor

Change is in the air along with the dust and smoke so keep your eyes peeled for anything that appeals to you.

After the AGM we all thank the outgoing committee members for their tireless efforts in helping bring the club to the admirable position it now commands. The new committee is busy settling into their roles.

The new constitution we voted in will be accessed through our website soon. Our website is undergoing other changes too with more club information to be at your fingertips.

The results of piste survey is in and many people have chosen change. The Belconnen piste has been declared a success and will be looking to expand.

Our weather has changed too and UV levels are reaching extreme so cover up and hydrate to ensure your playing pleasure. If you are uncomfortable in the sun ask if your fellow players would like to move the game to the shade. 🥵

DiscussionOverall, 13 out of 17 responses were in favour of either total or partial re-surfacing of the piste. Only 2 of these clearly favoured total re-surfacing. Most responses supported a partial re-surfacing. Survey responses suggest there was strong support for this approach. Most respondents felt the existing piste hampered their skill development (lobbing, shooting au fer etc). Most respondents suggested changing some of the piste to a different surface could address a ‘one dimensionality’ of our current arrangements.

It should be noted that some of the support for change was less due to the playing experience than the playing conditions. Several respondents stated they were concerned about the heat and glare from our current surface and suggested changing the colour of the playing surface accordingly.

It should also be noted that the responses not supporting change raised some important issues. One was that any change should not impact on disability access to the piste. Another was to ensure that appropriate gravel was available for purchase.

Issues to ConsiderShade: It should be noted that several survey responses were concerned about the issue of shade coverage as much as the surface. There were several suggestions made in this regard including the following: A more expensive option (perhaps for the future) may be to build shade trellises around the piste. These could be draped with drought-tolerant native vines/ creepers, such as Pandorea (Wonga wonga vine), Hardenbergia, Kangaroo vine or native grapes. We might get some assistance/ sponsorship from the nursery next door (particularly if we let them advertise on the trellises). Bleeding: The club needs to consider how or if to manage the point at the piste where two surfaces meet. With run off etc. there will surely be some ‘bleeding’ between two different surfaces. The club needs to consider if this is a significant issue or merits any kind of ‘barrier’ between two surfaces. Experience with other clubs is that a barrier is not necessary and ‘bleeding’ between surfaces just creates another playing environment to manage. Piste Lanes: Any change should be mindful of any impact on the number of pistes and on piste allocation. Again, this may not be a significant issue but in tournaments with random draws under new conditions, clearly some players will be happier on some pistes than others. Cost: The overall cost for adequate coverage of up to half the piste with new stones is not likely to be prohibitive (probably less than $1000). The last time stones were delivered the piste, they were spread by members. Government approval: Given we are a leaseholder, the Committee may wish to consider if the proposed changes merit notification to the Government. They may be too subtle to warrant this, but it is worth considering.

Piste survey Here are some extracts from the report Sebastian has made on our response to the piste survey.

Circles

Lena has gifted 10 brand spanking new plastic rings for the club to use, colour RED. They are the thick plastic ones with 'Capital Petanque' stamped into them as a final touch. At present we have 11 rings on the Capital Petanque Club club trolley and with Lena's kind offer of 10 more gives us a total of 21 rings. Enough for any large tournament I would think. All thanks to Lena for her kindness and club spirit in ordering extra rings as part of a boule order.

Ivo

Eyes front everyone. Shiny new circles are ready for extreme petanque.

🍴  An enjoyable way to improve our club finances 🍻 One of our important sources of funds is the Canberra Southern Cross Club’s Community Rewards Program. By swiping your membership card when making a purchase at any Canberra Southern Cross Club venue, such as the Yarralumla Yacht Club, you are donating to the community group of your choice. To ensure this happens you need to link your preferred club to your card. I have just realised it was not connected to my inbox so I could not have received anything through that address. A bit slow on the uptake.

After some help from a legion of people it should now work.

So send away.Kerry

Extremely enjoyableThe 4 Coopers did it again but made it diabolically more difficult than before. Using the trees, mounds and tracks around our piste they had a course of 13 destination circles set up with coches placed just in view of the thrower.

The gravel road was back with estimating the roll factor vital.

Go logging had many boules hopping into the wood.

The weeping branches had tricky overhead hazards.

Sandpit was a welcome addition bringing beachside memories of subterranean coches.Lena seemed be aiming at the tower.

The Rockies had a clear path but many players lost their way.

Fallen hurdle had the coche placed so that it was visible from the circle but seemed to be unreasonably protected by sticks when throwing.

The woodpile had its charms. Don’t be short Jim.

Heike’s over the wood and pointing perfection.

Autumn leaves were excellent for hide coche and seek coche and toss your partner it seems.

It was worth winning the wooden spoon as it was actually a box of chocolates. So Jean came out from hiding and claimed her prize alongside her partner Ivo.

Congratulations to Richard, Lois, Mark and Robyn. You have become masters of the tricky art of Extreme Petanque course design.

We hope to be back next year with more challenges and tons of fun.

Many thanks to the clever Coopers.

And the grinning most extreme winners were Lena and Smitty with drinks for afters.

What’s the Rule?

……and smooth over the line you made on the piste to mark the circle’s position at the completion of each end.

Who owns the piste? I observed a lot of ‘piste invading‘ last Sunday while umpiring. While this is all good and cheerful in a casual situation, we should know when we can, and when we can’t, be on the piste, for competition purposes. As umpires, we try to be knowledgable of the rules, and FSM gives us the opportunity to test our knowledge, and help members understand the rules.

So, here is a scenario I have discussed with Smitty, about who ‘owns’ the piste, when it’s not entirely straightforward.

Team A holds (My understanding is if you are not presently in the circle you stand still and quiet 2m to the side behind the coche or the circle.)

Team B throws their boule, they look and say ‘we hold’.

Team A’s time starts then and they may go inspect and team B must leave the piste.

Now if either team says that needs to be measured, nobody at this time holds so both teams move in for the measurement and the clock is stopped.

The team that threw the last boule measures first. If no agreement is made the umpire is called.

We hope that this helps you to know when you are entitled to be on the piste.

Any questions…ask your nearest Ump!

Catherine.

Thanks UmpyA big thank you to our magnificent umpiring team. No other club has such a pool of Petanque knowledge.

Your efforts in learning and applying the rules have enabled our club to become a competitive force at home and away.

Your gentle push in the right direction comes at just the right moments to improve our game and is a welcome guide.

This is a wonderful way that more members could participate in the running of the club. If you have an interest in the rules perhaps you would like join our team of trusty umpires.

I’ve just had the best fun I’ve ever had at the club. Seriously. Extreme petanque!

I teamed up with Craig against Kerry and Callum. (You’ll see a few of my photos in the Boulesheet and on Facebook.) From the very first hole I was staggered by the cunning layouts of the Coopers: Robyn, Lois, Mark and Richard.

The forest floor sticks, the cleverly arranged log barriers, the rock pile and mean stone funnel, the deep leaf litter, the dusty road, over the wood pile into the conifer mulch, the horizontal branches obstacle, the hard gravel road and the sandy loam heaps. Thanks Coopers for creating such a fun and challenging event. There’s been a lot to do since our AGM, with a new constitution impacting on our procedures as well as role handovers for president, secretary and treasurer.

Thank you to the committee past and committee present. Much of the committee’s work is behind the scenes, but it enables our continuing operation while also looking to further innovation in the coming year. There are many roles essential to the club which are done off committee and it is this broad participation that is such a strength of Capital Petanque.

A big issue to tackle this coming year is the piste surface following on from Sebastian’s member survey. I think there’ll be something for everybody. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year,David C

In greener pastures %

Note the white cochenet , a golf ball. Classic! Piste in very picturesque location. Very coarse stones, tricky but we thought fun to play on.Rob M

At our accommodation in Blenheim the other day we had a couple of petanque games. Helena won one & I won the other. Very fair, balanced & civilised. Then we retired to enjoy a glass of great Marlborough wine, or two.

The 2019-20 First Sunday of the Month competition started again on Sunday December 1st, which marked a coolish start to our later summer starts. It was a tie between Adele and Lena for the top spot for the women, and Mick topped the table for the men, with Mark C in second place. Mick was the only person to win all three games. Thanks to Smitty and Catherine for sharing the umpiring duties. The next round of the First Sunday of the Month competition will be held on January 5th.

Competition resumes

The Belconnen Piste

The beautiful north side pistes are going strong every Saturday morning. Thanks to Gary and Margaret coordinating play it has a steady attendance and the cool play area will be most attractive this summer.
