A Trip to Washington D.C.
The Capitol Building
• An amazing stop in the tour where we found out about laws that have been passed since the inception of our government along with history about the architecture and artwork within the building
Hall of Pillars
• There are 40 pillars in this room just below the capital dome and function as the main support for the feature
• In the center of the room is a tomb dedicated to George Washington, however his remains are located at the family home at Mount Vernon
The Dome
• Made entirely of cast iron, the art work at the top of the dome is the Apotheosis of Washington or his ascension to heaven and becoming a God himself.
• What’s amazing about Washington is that after having lead the Colonies to victory over Britain, he was offered pretty much anything he wanted including control of this new land… Washington declined!
Hall of Statues
• Was the old Senate wing, however, due to poor acoustics, the room is now dedicated to statues which are continually being added and swapped by states that wish to contribute
Preparation for Inauguration
• As seen from Grant memorial where our group photo will be taken
Korean War Memorial
• Korean War caused a split between North and South Korea along the 38th parallel
• Artist wanted 38 soldiers for that purpose but had no room
• Erected a marble wall to reflect 19 soldier statues creating the illusion of 38
Arlington National Cemetery
• Cemetery for honored fallen soldiers of the United States Armed Forces
• Also the location of President John F. Kennedy• Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and changing of
the guard ceremony
Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial
Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial
World War II Memorial
• Has all 50 states plus US territories which were involved in the war each with double column
• The wall has 4,048 gold stars which each represent 100 Americans
Summary
• D.C. is an amazing city and experience• It was my first time there and will definitely not be my
last• The tour guides were knowledgeable and open to any
and all questions• The accommodations were great and the entire trip
from start to finish was extremely organized• Any facts that were in this presentation I actually
learned from attending this trip, so to say the least, it’s a learning experience that will stick with you
