Want Pictures? We Got 'Em
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then this issue of The Legend speaks volumes. For the first time ever, we are able to bring you color photos of all the Popular Vote and Concours win-ners from the GTOAA Nationals.
A specific confluence of events had to take place to make this possible. First, of course, was the availability of many color pages in this issue. Next, the co-operation of our Meet photographers, Signature Studios, who provided the photos. Then we have Steve Ruggles who managed the Meet entry database, and computer whiz Gary Brodock who assembled the PowerPoint presentation at this year's awards banquet. All of these folks working together made it happen, so a heartfelt thanks to them. I think you will find that with only a cou-ple exceptions, we have every winning car pictured here for you.
Speaking of pictures, we also got over 1,500 images from GTOAA volun-teers who were kind enough to send along the shots they took at the conven-tion. Among them were Karen Adreani, Bob Alexander, Bob Axtman, Joe James, John Johnson, Stephen Morton, Steve Ruggles, and Nick Sickle. We didn't have room for a lot of them in this issue, but as space permits in the coming months, we will run some of them for your enjoyment.
Aside From Photos…
No amount of pictures can convey the amount of hard work and long hours it takes to conduct a successful conven-tion. The Electric City GTOs, with plenty of good help from the Pioneer Valley club, kept things running smoothly and on time. They worked while the rest of us had fun, and that's what hospitality is all about. All in-volved deserve a big thank you!
Mike Landau and Paul Bourbeau, along with their respective parking lot crews, are to be commended for manag-ing a challenging parking area situation. With space at a premium and a previous convention booked at the hotel that liked the place so much that they decided to stay an extra day, it took some juggling. Still, the Electric City and Pioneer Val-ley team managed to accommodate eve-ryone, which is a credit to the care and dedication they put in day after day after day by. An outstanding job.
If anyone walked in from the park-ing lot well after dark, you also saw Steve Ruggles and/or Gary Brodock working night after night to keep every-thing up to date on the computer side of things. And of course we had conven-tion chairmen Mark Klos and Greg Du-brule dealing with minute-by-minute is-sues with the hotel and other venues that are involved with this kind of event.
What Did You Think?
Please tell us about your Meet ex-perience. It's always good to get the per-spective of people who attended and weren't involved with the day-by-day is-sues of running the convention like we were. What you liked, what you didn't like, what we could do more of, less of, or differently. The convention is for your enjoyment, so please let us know how it worked for you.
Don't Forget . . .

HIGHLIGHTS:
2008 Meet Summary & 2009 Meet Preview New Chapter Coordinator Announced
Less than 24 hours ago, I returned
from my first visit to New York and this year’s annual convention. The week I was there flew by in a blur. I assure you that I will never forget my trip to Sara-toga Springs and the surrounding area and the incredible 2008 Meet. With that in mind, I want to thank Chairmen Greg Dubrule and Mark Klos and the men and women of the Electric City GTOs for hosting this year’s event and the Pioneer Valley GTO Association for their sup-port. On behalf of the GTOAA Direc-tors and Staff I also send a special “thanks” to all of the vendors, VIPs, and the sponsors.
I especially want to recognize John Sawruk for attending while struggling with serious health issues. John is a long-time and dedicated supporter of the GTOAA and I can’t begin to express my appreciation for his attendance this year. I noted that there were more than 300 members registered this year with over 60 cars in Concours and approximately 150 entered in the Popular Vote Show. I also know that we gained at least 20 new members in the GTOAA as a result of the 2008 Meet!
Among the many highlights for me was the largest gathering of 1973 GTOs I have witnessed since I began attending Meets in 2000. The conventions are only getting better and more enjoyable for everyone in attendance and the ven-ues continue to be very interesting with a myriad of activities for the GTO enthusi-ast and his or her family. If you have never been to a Meet or haven’t gone lately, I encourage you to start planning now for next year. You will never forget the experience.
Speaking of an unforgettable ex-perience, plan now for next year’s his-tory making event. For the first the time
ever (and maybe the last time), the GTOAA and the Pontiac Oakland Club International (POCI) will hold a joint convention. Can you imagine the variety of cars we will see next year? How about the number of cars and people? Folks, we could see over 1,000 cars at next year’s event and 2,000 registrations.
Why do I state this? Well, within a day’s drive of Dayton, Ohio, GTOAA and POCI have 8,000 members! I hope to see all of you next year at this incredi-ble event in Dayton, Ohio. Carefully re-view this month’s issue and future issues of The Legend for updates and high-lights. We already started coverage of the 2009 Meet in the August issue.
What happened between July 15 and July 19? As in the past, Meet partici-pants were treated to seminars and a dis-play of special vehicles from Pontiac, in-cluding the 400+ horsepower G8 GXP. As usual, several VIPs attended includ-ing Jim Wangers, Arnie Beswick, John Sawruk, Paul Zazarine, Jim Mattison, and Milt Schornack.
Meet attendees enjoyed discussions on various historical and pertinent topics relative to their GTOs. Drag racing and autocross were on the schedule with the historic Lebanon Valley Raceway as the venue for the drag race.
For history buffs like me, just a 20-minute drive from the Meet and you ar-rived at the site of the Battle of Saratoga, the event that was the turning point in the Revolutionary War. The Saratoga Auto Museum featured a display dedi-cated to GTOs with display cars repre-senting 1964-1974 GTOs and a 2004 GTO representing the 04-06 models. For me, the highlight of this year’s Meet was the cruise on beautiful Lake George that culminated with an amazing fire-works display that evening.
The Meet concluded Saturday night, July 19, with the awards banquet featur-ing opening entertainment via bagpipes and a presentation about next year’s Co-vention by Chairman John Spiess and Steve Fleury of the POCI Grand Prix Chapter. Again, I encourage you to start planning for next year. You can make hotel reservations now if you desire.
After an exhaustive search for nearly a year, I am proud to announce that we have a new Chapter Coordinator. The GTOAA Board of Directors and I selected Bill Vantuono for this position. John Johnson, after over three years of dedicated service, stepped down in early August and immediately transitioned his duties to Bill. John will remain as our Commercial Advertising Coordinator and a GTOAA Director. Bill may be familiar to you because he has written numerous outstanding articles for this publication. I look forward to great things for our organization and our chap-ters as a result of Bill’s dedication, ex-perience, and service.
It’s time to close for now. I need to finish unpacking. Next month, I will provide the highlights from the 2008 GTOAA Board of Directors meeting in-cluding detailed information on new ini-tiatives and a review of the previous year’s accomplishments.
I will also provide a summary of the Council of Presidents' Meeting and as a result of a request during that meeting, I will investigate the possibility of increas-ing our liability insurance coverage in 2009.
Keep checking our website for up-dates and note the link to next year’s Meet website. Thank you for your sup-port of the GTOAA!

The Electric City GTOs would
like to formally thank the Pioneer Valley GTO Association for their hard work, commitment, and dedication to help in making the 2008 GTOAA International Meet a truly memorableevent. Thanks also to Stephen "Morty" Morton, member of PVGTO, for managing the '04-'06 contingent's tech-in and show field spaces, pro-viding a more balanced flow for view-ing and judging.
Not once did any PVGTO mem-ber complain or leave their post dur-ing the entire event, and most were working long hours without relief. These things do not go unnoticed, and are to be commended. Thank you members of PVGTO.
I would also like to thank Amy Perciballi, president of the Long Is-land GTO Club, for gathering the second largest group of chapter par-ticipants (second only to Pioneer Val-ley) and their help on the field, in a strong show of support for their up-state New York neighbors. Thank you Members of LIGTO Club.
Thank you to all our VIPs and sponsors, and a very special thank you to John Sawruk for his never ending passion for Pontiacs and his willingness to share his knowledge, even in these trying personal times. We wish him and his family well. Please keep John and the family in your prayers.
Lastly, thank you to all that at-tended and became part of the Na-tionals, see a part of this country you might not ever get to see otherwise, and enjoy the hobby and the cars with old and new friends. On behalf of all of the Electric City GTO members, Mark Klos Co-chairman 2008 convention

Membership Affiliation Awards
GTOAA’s goal in chartering clubs as official chapters of the national organization is to increase GTOAA membership and provide ways for GTOAA members to get together on a local level to enjoy the fellowship of people in the GTO hobby. Chapter Membership Affiliation Awards recognize local clubs for the percentage of national GTOAA members in the local organization.
I will note that just as the minimum GTOAA membership require-ment for the older chapters was increased a couple years ago from 33% to 40% (newer chapters need 100%), the award percentages for each level increased as well, as follows:
Bronze – 50% to 69% national membership Silver – 70% to 89% national membership Gold – 90% to 100% national membership
For 2008, 25 of our chapters received GTOAA Membership Affilia-
tion Awards, indicating that many local clubs are increasing their na-tional membership as time goes on. This is a positive step in increasing overall national participation. The following chapters were recognized for their GTOAA membership levels at this year’s International Meet in Saratoga Springs, NY: Gold Level Connecticut GTO Club Goat Herd GTO Club of Oregon Land of Enchantment GTOs Long Island GTO Club Northeast Ohio GTO Association Silver Level Delaware Valley Old Goat Club God’s Country Pontiac Club Greater Pittsburgh GTO Club Gulf Coast GTOs Southeastern GTO Association Bronze Level Classic GTO Association of Denver Gateway GTO Assoc. of St. Louis GR-RRR8‘R Wichita GTO Club GTO Association of North Texas Inland Empire GTO Club Indy GTO Association Land of Lakes GTO Club Louisville Pontiac GTO Club Northeast Indiana GTOs Northern Colorado GTO Association Southern California Gathering of Goats Sunshine State GTO Association Tarheel Tigers Pontiac Club Western NY GTO Club Woodward GTO Tigers

Just as The Legend magazine is the
primary communication tool that keeps every GTOAA member informed as to the club’s activities and news, the chap-ter newsletter serves the same purpose on a much more personal level. For those of you who have done the editor’s job, you know how many hours of work are put into each issue. Therefore it is only proper that we step back a minute and recognize chapter newsletters that are a step above average.
One obvious thing to note is that I reviewed only chapter newsletters for which the chapter was in compliance with the GTOAA guidelines. Also, GTOAA chapters were divided into three categories by membership size: under 50, 51 to 100, and over 100 mem-bers. This was done so that smaller chapters would not be in competition with larger ones that have greater finan-cial resources and more available talent. Obviously, a chapter with 22 members does not have the same amount of money and personnel that a chapter with 150 members has. Also as from last year’s awards, I tried to use the same ob-jective standards for selecting the win-ners, much as a car show judge evaluates various areas of a vehicle at a show. The Newsletter Excellence Award recipients were selected based on the following cri-teria:
Consistency of publication
Newsletters are eligible to be judged for awards as long as they are published on a regular schedule even though it might not be monthly. The minimum will be quarterly. Also, for those chap-ters that continue to publish and mail out a printed newsletter, please continue to do so. Many chapters are e-mailing out their newsletter. We will accept these as well. Either way, as long as we receive the newsletter, you’re in the running to be judged for the award.
Please note that we have a new Chapter Coordinator, Bill Vantuono. You now need to mail or e-mail your newsletters to him. His contact info is at the end of this article.
Service to the organization Consideration was given for how
well a publication reported on club func-tions, promoted club events, provided in-formation on things of interest to mem-bers, and generally advocated participa-tion and involvement. Promotion of the GTOAA was also evaluated and does count toward your rating.
Quality of writing
Spelling and grammar count. Much like a car show judge evaluating a vehi-cle, we look for “correctness,” and “numbers matching.” So, knowing the difference between “there” and “their” or recognizing that Verdoro is not spelled “Verdauro” or “Verdero” counted for something. Most word-processing pro-grams have a spelling and grammar-checking feature, and by now everyone should have stopped saying “Irish Mist.” Having minimal errors per issue sepa-rated the carefully edited publications from the, let’s say, not-so-carefully ed-ited ones.
Contribution by chapter members
Members’ articles submitted to the chapter newsletter make for a more di-versified and interesting publication. The best ones exhibit a variety of techni-cal articles, stories about peoples’ cars, reports on club activities, and original material submitted by club members.
Overall production values
Whether it may be attractive page layouts, a variety of typefaces, use of columns, sidebars, graphics, and even color, turning out a professional-looking newsletter takes time and effort. Quality photo reproduction is a key area, and the really attractive newsletters in our group approach magazine quality in that re-gard.
I would add that in general the qual-ity of newsletters has improved every year, and the competition has become greater. It is possible that some chapters that won last year didn’t get the award this year because of the increased quality of the competition. Desktop publishing
makes great strides every year, and many of our chapter newsletter editors really do an amazing job. This year’s recipi-ents of the “Certificate of Chapter News-letter Excellence” are: Cactus GTOs Carolina Classic Pontiac Club Classic GTO Association of Denver Cruisin’ Tigers GTO Club Gateway GTO Association of St. Louis Goat Herd GTO Club of Oregon GR-RRR8'R Wichita GTO Club GTO Association of Pennsylvania Gulf Coast GTOs Heart of Illinois GTO Club Land of Lakes GTO Club North East Indiana GTO Club Northern Colorado GTO Association Ohio Valley GTO Association Pioneer Valley GTO Association Royal GTOs Southeastern GTO Association Southern California Gathering of Goats Sunshine State GTO Association Susquehanna Valley GTO Tigers Tarheel Tigers Pontiac Club Tri-Valley GTO Club of Southern Cali-fornia Western NY GTO Club Woodward GTO Tigers
In closing, I would like to thank everyone for sending their publications to me over the past three years. It's been great to see what's happening around the country in various clubs.
As I mentioned earlier, Bill Van-tuono is now your Chapter Coordinator, so be sure to add him to your mailing (or e-mailing) list of newsletter recipients. Chapter Coordinator Bill Vantuono 431 16th Avenue Brick, NJ 08724 (732) 208-6860 [email protected]

..Chapter Awards at the 2008 Nationals by John Johnson..
History Of The Award
About 14 years ago, a dedicated GTO-er named Tom Foster co-founded the Goat Herd GTO Club of Oregon. Obviously he was a mover and a shaker -- a very active GTO-er to say the least. Tom was also very dedicated to the GTOAA, which was proven by his efforts to form and be-come a leader of that chapter, mak-ing sure it became affiliated with the GTOAA, and helped begin The Tiger Run Northwest GTOAA Regional Meet. His level of commitment to the GTOAA, and his influence on the chapter is evident as The Goat Herd is a 100% GTOAA membership chapter, which is very impressive for a chapter of over 100 members.
Outside of the car hobby, I have also heard him described as the kind of person you’d want to have for your neighbor; honest, a good hus-band, a decent person, always willing to offer his assistance to help you out.
Tragically, an accident took Tom’s life a few years ago.
To honor his memory, the GTOAA created the Tom Foster Memorial Award. This award is dedicated to his love for the GTO, the commitment he made to his chap-ter, his volunteer spirit, and his sup-port of the GTOAA Our 2008 Recipient
This year's Tom Foster Memorial Award recipient is a charter member of his local chapter, the Long Island GTO Club, and the proud owner of a 1964 GTO. He exhibits the ultimate GTO/GTOAA attitude! He is posi-tive and enthusiastic about the GTOAA, his local chapter, and the car hobby.

At his club’s monthly meetings, he gives a membership report. He keeps the club aware of his efforts – and does not believe in e-mail and computers. He is old fashioned and likes to get people on the phone and speak to them personally. He con-tacts GTOAA members, his club’s members, as well as non-renewed members and potential members.
He calls just to say “hi” – giving a more personal approach rather than cold e-mail. He will talk to people who have not renewed either club and find out what the problem is and

He is known to his fellow club members as “Mr. 50/50” raising THOUSANDS of dollars for charity at various events.
He is a promoter of not only our club but is also a patriot. EveryMemorial Day he takes part in his local town Memorial Day parade with his GTO and he will get several members of our club to join with himin these parades, again promoting not only our club but the USA!
On behalf of the GTOAA offi-cers and board of directors, it is myprivilege to present the 2008 Tom Foster Memorial Award to Steve Calabrese of the Long Island GTO Club. Congratulations!

Timothy Sickle [email protected] GTOAA #9015
I owe all my fellow GTOAA mod-elers an apology. My goal was to have the completed “Smokey & the Bandit” T/A finished and on display at the Nats. Well, that obviously didn’t happen. One thing led to another in trying to get ready for the ‘Big Show,’ and something had to suffer. I don’t seem to be alone, though. I talked to several of our "Little GTOs" column readers who admitted to me that they had X-number of models they were intent on bringing, but ran short on time. Steve Kodesch, model car contest coordinator, told me there were 53 pre-registrations (!).
So, what happened to the rest of you guys? Several of you actually offered apologies, and promised to bring them next year to Dayton if you are able to at-tend. Speaking of Dayton, considering the 2009 combined POCI / GTOAA Co-Vention, and the variety of Pontiac kits still available out there (i.e., Firebirds, Bonnevilles, Grand Prixs, and, of course, GTOs), the ‘09 model car contest could be huge. So, let’s work on that, OK? I’ll try to post some Internet sites where models are available.
I also brought along some of my previously built collection of Pontiacs that will grace the “Pontiac Builds Ex-citement” museum when finished (you saw it in the construction stages if you were at the convention).
Oh, and as soon as humanly possi-ble, I’ll show you guys all ‘the Bird.’
As usual, if you run across some-thing that has not been covered in this column (diecast or plastic), I’d love to hear about it. Thanks to all of you out there who have responded with com-ments and Goat finds. Questions? Suggestions? You know where to reach me. As always, have fun buying, build-ing, and/or collecting. In closing, remember—the Great One STILL rules (in several scales!).
Here are the winners of this year's GTOAA Nationals model contest.
