Historical Review ü  The need for this program was originally identified in1998, in meetings

with the President, the Secretary of Commerce, and leading CEO’s. It was recognized that US curriculum did not include aspects of international trade. This resulted in a Dept. of Commerce initiating the Virtual Trade Mission.

ü  In Oakland County, this was modified to match local needs as educators

and business partners worked with government officials to design and deliver the GTM model, a simulated trade mission for students.

ü  Initially sponsored by Automation Alley, hosted by Oakland

Community College, and managed by Oakland Schools, the project has a regional impact. Support from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the Governor’s office, and the Department of Commerce has allowed for local and global business support.

What is GTM?

Teams of four students from districts across the county are issued a Global Challenge. They will research, develop, and market a product , technology or a service in another country and present their business plan to an Evaluator Panel

Why should I participate? Global Citizenship ü  Designed to address the academic and workplace skills of students, including their

understanding of cultural differences, mastery of communication skills, awareness of issues of global trade, and ability to produce a plan in response to a specified challenge, with time and resource constraints. High School Social Studies Content Expectations

21st Century Teaching & Learning - Career & Life Skills ü  GTM is designed to simulate the real skills required to succeed in business in the 21st

century. This includes a demonstrated mastery of social studies issues, communication, global language, technology, problem solving, teamwork, and workplace skills, as referenced in the Michigan Curriculum Framework.

Career & Employability Skills - MDE ü  Student participants gain unique and powerful lessons not only in the subject matter of

global trade and culture, but also personal learning. This includes communications, use of global technology, teamwork, diversity, career awareness coaches and mentors.

Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) ü  Goal 4: To positively affect the economic growth of the community by elevating the

science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and critical thinking skills of students to enable them to become stronger members of the global workforce. nCASE
