The Artful Origins of OrigamiFrom the Japanese words “ori” (meaning “to fold”) and “kami” (“paper”), origami is a popular craft practiced all over the world.

Although paper itself was invented in Egypt and China, the Japanese are believed to be the first to use paper folding as an art form.

Initially, origami was practiced only by the elite and saved for spiritual ceremonies and special occasions such as weddings. However, when paper became more affordable, origami spread to the general public and was even taught to children in school.

The first origami guide was “Thousand Crane Folding” by Akisato Rito, published in 1797. The title takes its name from the Japanese legend that says if a person folds 1,000 paper cranes, they will be granted a wish.

In 1954, Akira Yoshizawa, known as the grandmaster of origami, published “New Origami Art,” which contains the symbols used today in origami instructions.

Ranging from simple to complex, the possibilities for origami are practically endless. There are thousands of books on the subject, as well as free diagrams and videos online, to help beginners get started.

Famous Fictional FelinesStatistics show about one-third of U.S. households have at least one cat. The prevalence of kitty characters in art, literature and entertainment proves that felines have been purr-ty popular for quite some time. Which one of these whiskered wonders is your favorite?

Puss in Boots — This classic storybook character, which first appeared in a 1534 Italian folk tale, uses his cunning to bring romance and riches to his master, a poor miller’s son.

The Cheshire Cat — With a mysterious grin and the frustrating ability to disappear and reappear at will, the Cheshire Cat helps guide the title character in Lewis Carroll’s novel “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.”

Felix the Cat — This black-and-white kitty ruled during the silent film era of the 1920s and ‘30s. In the 1950s, he acquired a fresh look and a “magic bag of tricks,” which helps Felix out during sticky situations.
