DAY 2 ARTICLE

Are your kids addicted to the Internet? It may be your parenting style

Internet addiction in children

has been blamed on everything from a lack of friends to poor

mental health, and now new research suggests it's related to a tough-love parenting style.

Greek researchers have found that Internet-addicted young

adults are more likely to have experienced strict and unaffectionate parenting as children. "In short, good parenting, including parental warmth and affection,

that is caring and protective parents, has been associated with lower risk for Internet addiction," lead author Argyroula Kalaitzaki of

the Technological Education Institute tells Reuters. "Whereas bad parenting, including parental control and intrusion, that is authoritarian and neglectful parents, has been associated with

higher risk for addiction." The study, published in Addictive Behaviors, looked at more than

700 young adults around age 20 attending technical schools. Researchers examined the self-reported questionnaires of the

participants regarding their feelings of loneliness, sadness and anxiety. They also looked at the participants' Internet usage and the parenting style they were exposed to.

The researchers found a link between a demanding parenting style devoid of affection and greater social isolation as a young adult.

Young adults who recalled their fathers as being controlling and their mothers as lacking affection reported higher degrees of

sadness and challenges making friends -- personality traits that raise the risk of Internet addiction.

"Parents should be made aware of the harmful impact that a potential negative parental rearing style may have upon their

children in later life,”

DAY 4 DEBATE

Korea should aid in international efforts to explore the ocean

The ocean occupies the majority of the surface of the earth. However, most of the ocean has never been explored. While some politicians have been arguing for the human species to increase its efforts to explore outer-space, others have been asking the question of why we are not more concerned with fully exploring the planet that we currently live on.

The ocean is vast and there are many things that scientists could learn from further exploration. A renewed effort to explore the ocean could find countless new species and give us new insight into how the ocean’s ecosystem functions. However, ocean exploration is very difficult and extremely expensive. Do you think that ocean exploration is worth the time and energy?

Pros: Korea should aid in efforts to explore the ocean. The ocean could have

massive amounts of natural resources that we are unaware of. Discovering

these resources would make lots of money for the country that was able to

capture them.

Likewise, new species of animals may be extremely helpful for science. Many

species of plants and animals have special properties that can be utilized for

medicine, such as anti-cancer and anti-aging drugs. These drugs could save

millions of lives and creating these drugs should be a top priority for science

today

Cons: Yes, ocean exploration is expensive. So is every new scientific

endeavour. While governments are considering spending millions of dollars to

explore outer-space, Korea should be spending money making sure that all the

resources of this planet are found and utilized.

No amount of money is too much to find a cure for cancer. My opponent has

no reason to save money if it means that humanity is not progressing

scientifically. In this way, the possibility to find new medicine from plant and

animal species in the ocean is the most important issue in this debate. moral

obligation is too strong of a statement.

DAY 5 BUSINESS IDIOM FOCUS

Read and be familiar with the Business Idiom below and use them in your conversation.

Why study idioms?

One of the keys to speaking like a native is the ability to use and

understand casual expressions, or idioms.

1. be broke: be without money.

Example 1: "No, I can't lend you ten dollars. I'm completely broke until payday."

Example 2: I am broke, I can’t celebrate the new year.

2. be fed up with (with someone or something): be out of

patience (with someone or something);

be very tired of someone or something.

Example 1: "Bill, you're too careless with your work. I'm fed up

with apologizing for your mistakes!"

Example 2: You are out of this class, I am fed up with your

excuses!

3. be in and out: be at and away from a place during a particular time.

Example 1: "Could we postpone our meeting until tomorrow? I

expect to be in and out of the office most of the day today."

Example 2: I would love to have luch with you, but I will be in

and out of the office tomorrow.

4. be on the go: be very busy (going from one thing or

project to another).

Example 1: I'm really tired. I've been on the go all week long.

Example 2: That’s why I really like him, because he’s always on

the go.
