That seemed to be the crux of the problem. For three years Nationalist China has financed its civil war with printing presses. Now, with the nation's fortunes at an all-time low, China is trying to stop the printing presses. How can it pay and feed and keep its armies fighting?
One large Chinese banker, connected with the government, saw an outside chance for stabilization, providing there is an iron resolve at the top level to limit the amount of new money issued. He doubted that the new money had enough backing to be stabilized at four to $1, but thought the line might be held at somewhere around 20 to $1. That will happen only if the printing presses are padlocked, he said.
The Shanghai Exchange rate on the old currency fell from 13 million to $1 to 10,5U0,(KR) to $1.
