Dr. Samir Ahmad Maalouf*

Abstract

Arab scholars_ philosophers, jurisprudents linguists, and rhetoricians_ related meaning and mental imagery because they argued that meaning is the mental imagery beside which words are set. And in attempting to grasp meaning, it is advisable to examine mental imagery and reveal its relation to the perception of the external reality as well as its affinity to the idiom suggestive of this imagery. This paper endeavors to show the conception of mental imagery in classical Arab critics. And this will not be possible without looking at the concept of mental imagery of Western critics. This will help clarify it for Arab scholars. This paper does not seek to compare this conception, but rather to show how each party viewed this subject.
