This Paper mainly details• Necessity of creation & steps involved in creating Institutional Repository• Complexities involved in creation & maintenance of IR• Benefits rendered by IR• Growth statistics of Anna University beginning from the year it got affiliated
till today• Present status of Anna University – judged by documents published every
year • Data collection & Segregation under various categories• Preliminary estimate of expenditure involved in creation & maintenance of
IR
INTRODUCTION
• Anna University established in 4th Sep 1978 imparts higher education in Science & Technology, promotes research & fosters co-operation between academic and industrial communities
• Presently 625 Engineering Colleges are functioning under Anna University - 4 constituent colleges with University Departments, 13 Constituent colleges of Anna University, 12 Government & government aided Engineering Colleges and 596 affiliated colleges of Anna University under four regional centres in Tirunelveli, Madurai, Thiruchirapalli & Coimbatore

• To enhance the visibility of the productivity profile of Anna University Chennai
• To facilitate online and open access to the research publications of Anna University Chennai
METHODOLOGY
Steps involved in creation of IR include
– Step 1: Data Identification and Selection
– Step 2: Data Collection & Segregation
– Step 3: Design & Development
• Software & Hardware
• Content Creation and Development
• Content organization
– Step 4: Web hosting
– Step 5: Maintenance

RESEARCH OUTCOME / INSTITUTIONAL BENEFITS
• Information auditing & Knowledge flow• Bringing together scattered R&D out put• Bringing visibility of Gray Literature• Identify and systematically evaluate the science and technology innovations
of the Anna University Chennai • Identify the stronger and weaker areas in the Science & Technology
research.• Identify the Gap areas, and fill the Gap in the R&D of Science &
Technology in the Nation• Public Accessibility to Scientific Research and Scholarly Information.• Promoting the ‘Open Access’ to Scholarly Knowledge concept, created by
the University’s research units, for the consumption of Public Commons.• Global visibility of the Institutions & Scientists• Seamless flow of Knowledge leading to increased scientific productivity
and knowledge production.
CONCLUSION
Statistical data on research outputs being published year after year reveal numerous outputs from research scholars of Anna University. Such valuable treasures of Anna University are not readily available for easy reference for future generation. As a step towards bringing the hidden treasures readily available for young research scholars, creation of Digital Repository is the only solution. Data Collection and segregation is the first step towards achieving such a major goal.
