  • A STRATEGY FOR CRICKET IN GREATER MANCHESTER

  • It is an exciting and pivotal time for cricket in Greater Manchester. We are in the midst of the greatest summer of cricket we have ever seen, with Emirates Old Trafford hosting some of the biggest games of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, the Men’s Ashes and the Vitality T20 Blast. Next year will see the start of cricket’s new national strategy, Inspiring Generations, and the launch of Manchester’s newest sports team as part of The Hundred, an innovative and exciting new cricket competition.

All of this presents a huge opportunity for the city region to build on the legacy of the Men’s World Cup winning team and harness the power of cricket to transform the lives of the people of Greater Manchester and inspire a generation to take up the game.

To capitalise on this, the games organisers Lancashire Cricket, Cheshire Cricket Board, the England and Wales Cricket Board and Chance to Shine have partnered with the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and the ten local councils with an ambition to create and deliver a 10-Point Action Plan for Cricket in Greater Manchester.

    INTRODUCTION

Together, we are developing an ambitious but simple three-year plan, that will use cricket to make Greater Manchester a better place to live.

“ Our 10-Point Action plan focuses on using cricket as a force for good, something that is important to all of us at Lancashire Cricket. The next few years will see significant growth to cricket across the region and we are proud to be partnering with GMCA and our other local and national partners to maximise this growth.

Daniel Gidney Chief Executive, Lancashire Cricket

“ I played cricket as a youngster and know what a wonderful team sport it is. We want to build on England’s World Cup success to harness the power of cricket to transform the lives of people here in Greater Manchester, inspiring a whole new diverse generation to take up the game. This unprecedented partnership with our friends at Lancashire Cricket, the ECB, Chance to Shine and others will take the sport into a new era in Greater Manchester.

  • THE ACTION PLAN

Our organisations have a shared belief in the power of sport to change people’s lives. We are driven by our vision…

To use cricket to improve young people’s lives and create stronger, healthier communities in Greater Manchester.

    OUR VISION

    KEY OUTCOMES

To achieve our vision, we want to...

STRENGTHEN OUR COMMUNITIESWe will use cricket to bring people together by providing more facilities and opportunities to play cricket in key urban areas of Greater Manchester. We will use cricket to mobilise and engage communities and people who are at most risk of inactivity and isolation.

EQUIP OUR YOUNG PEOPLE FOR LIFEWe will use cricket to ensure young people are “ready for life” by providing opportunities to learn, volunteer and train through cricket.

CELEBRATE OUR SPORTING INNOVATIONWe will use cricket to promote Greater Manchester as the UK’s home of sport and a centre of cultural and sporting innovation.

To achieve our vision, we have set out a proposed 10-Point Action Plan, to be delivered over three years in partnership with local cricketing, sporting and educational partners. The plan aims to deliver against our three key outcomes as follows.

TO STRENGTHEN OUR COMMUNITIES WE WILL…

Install 100 new artificial cricket pitches in public spaces to reduce inequality in access to sports facilities 1Deliver 14 new Chance to Shine Street projects that will provide the opportunity for young people from disadvantaged areas to play cricket

    3

Build an initial three Urban Cricket Centres that will become sporting and social community hubs2

TO CELEBRATE OUR SPORTING INNOVATION WE WILL…

Bring 5,000 young people per year to Emirates Old Trafford as part of Greater Manchester’s “Our Pass”9

Pilot and launch The Hundred recreational programme to give people the opportunity to play a new, exciting format of cricket 10

Create a network of hundreds of South Asian female volunteers to widen the reach of cricket in our communities4

TO EQUIP OUR YOUNG PEOPLE FOR LIFE WE WILL…

Deliver Chance to Shine to 20 new secondary schools to improve resilience and leadership skills in teenage girls7

Grow the Healthy Hearts schools programme to teach children the importance of a healthy lifestyle 6Deliver a suite of employability programmes, including 30 “Volunteer It Yourself” projects at cricket clubs, to support children and young adults through education, training and into employment

  • PARTNERSHIP

Our Action Plan has been developed, and will be delivered, in collaboration across local and national partners who are committed to ensuring the long-term success of the plan.

By working in partnership, we can leverage the expertise, resources and influence of our organisations to successfully deliver the plan. GMCA, in partnership with the ten local authorities, will seek to match fund investments made by Lancashire Cricket, Chance to Shine and ECB into the Action Plan.

The partnership will be led by the following cricketing, political and sporting organisations who will oversee the delivery of the plan.

In addition, the plan will involve partnering with a range of other local sporting and educational bodies.

For example, The Dean Trust, a local set of academy schools, will promote and support the delivery of the schools plans while Volunteer It Yourself, a national charity, will form part of our work to provide employability programmes to young people across the region.

We would love to hear from local individuals and organisations who share in our vision and believe they could support the delivery or promotion of our Action Plan.
