'It's May! It's May... That darling month when everyonethrows self-control away.' May 1, 2011. by Dr. Jeffrey Lant

I had quite a different thought in mind for my article today... but at about 4 a.m. a light breezecaressed me and I was overwhelmed by an astonishing chorus of birdsong, as one determinedwinged group answered another, each and every one of them demanding con brio that I wake up andcelebrate this day... and make sure you celebrate it, too, for the true end of winter (not just some dateon the calendar) is a most important thing.

So, I threw up the sash on the window and quaffed the air. There wasn't a touch of winter in it, not ascintilla, not a particle. It was well and truly May... and, in an instant, I was back over 50 years agowhere, in the breeze way, my mother was engaged in directing her young charges in the finer pointsof May baskets. But first...

On December 3, 1960 Lerner and Loewe's "Camelot" opened in New York with Julie Andrews andRichard Burton as Guinevere and King Arthur. Andrews belted out a pip of a song on May... and it'sutterly appropriate you let it enliven your day today. Go now to any search engine and find it, and letit be 1960 for you all over again...

"It's May! It's May! The lusty month of May! That lovely month when ev'ryone goes Blissfullyastray."

The truth is, my days of going "blissfully astray" have long passed. This is not a good thing... we allneed a day now and then when "wicked thoughts Merrily appear."

May 1 is tailor-made to be that day: "That gorgeous holiday When ev'ry maiden prays that her ladWill be a cad!"

For many years politics, particularly Red politics as directed by dour Russian communists whosedissipations were leaden and plodding, obscured the real purpose of May 1 and, indeed, the entiremonth of May. Lenin and company decreed that May's license for merriment be replaced byInternational Workers' Day (also known as International Labour Day).

Per usual, this determination came in a ukase from the sweat-drenched apparatchiki of Moscow...personally, I have always maintained that if the workers had been asked for their opinion on thematter they would have chosen...

""It's May, it's May, the month of 'Yes, you may' The time for every frivolous whim, proper or im-"

But that was the thing about those revolutionary Russkies: they were always telling you something, demanding something, insisting on something... the very things we throw off on May 1st... the betterto let our genetic code do its thing and direct us in uninhibited may-hem.

In short, the vital sap of May has proven its prodigious strength... there will not be in Moscow today-- or perhaps anywhere -- a tedious parade featuring tractors and heroes of the falsely namedrepublics. These parades and the grim visaged crew who invented and directed them have beentoppled... and we all have regained the undisputed right to a day "depraved in every way"... and agood thing, too. It's what the workers would have chosen for themselves... if anyone had bothered toask them. Which brings us back to the true meaning of May Day and the May days which follow....

Sacred to the feast of Beltane, Celtic start of summer.

May Day calls for a sloughing off of sober responsibilities and of the proper, serious, VIP you have

become. For this day, this single day, you dance, not march, to a different drummer, this time playedby the (rather sheepish) pagans who celebrate the festival of Beltane. Sadly these latter-dayneo-pagans are in desperate need of experienced help. I have rarely seen a more tatterdemalion crewor folks more in need of assistance in the art of dissipation. Their current antics are not inspiring andirritate, I aver, the high panoply of Celtic deities who wince every time a foul-smelling, foul-attiredBeltaniain happens by. In short, the neo-pagans are an embarrassment in need of a make-over, thebetter to serve the cause of excess and pleasure.

No doubt they are adversely afflicted by the shear lack of accurate information about how the goodpagans of yore did dissipate. What's known about Beltane, for instance, is quite frankly not veryattractive. For instance, a highlight of the event was the ever-festive bonfire created by rubbingsticks together. Related rituals included driving cattle between two fires, dancing around the fires, and burning witches in effigy, no doubt an acquired taste.

Another tradition was Beltane cakes, which would be broken into several pieces, one of which wasblackened. These pieces would then be drawn by celebrants at random, the person getting theunlucky piece would face a mock execution. Perhaps it was more alluring and pleasurable if youwere actually there...

Walpurgisnacht.

St. Walburga (or Walpurgis), the abbess of the monastery of Heidenheim, helped St. Boniface bringChristianity to 8th century Germany. The date of May 1 became, over time, sacred to this well-lovedChristian lady, the better to obliterate a pre-existing pagan festival, again including rites to protectoneself from witchcraft. This lead, in the muddled way with such matters, to a hybrid festival inwhich witches were said to meet with the Devil on the eve of May 1. The night of April 30th becameknown as "Walpurgisnacht"... and the day following was, perhaps, given over to gratitude for havingsurvived it.

Things were better in England...

In medieval England, folks would celebrate the start of spring by going out to the country or woods"going a-maying" by gathering greenery and flowers, the first description of this occurring in "TheCourt of Love" (1561). Thereafter the maypole went up... the music began... morris dancers at theready... and a May Queen to crown with persiflage, good humor, debauchery and the certainty of aheadache tomorrow. Yes, as always, the Brits know how to party...

From this tradition came my mother's May Day version. Like everywhere else in the great heartland,May 1st in Illinois meant the harsh winter was gone, gone forever. Everyone and everythingbreathed easier as a result; there was the promise of clemency and of sultry slower moving days. Theadvent to these days lay through the rich flora of midwestern America. Our home, beside a ramblingcreek, was incomparably beautiful at springtime, carpeted as it was with violets on every side. In thelate light of day, you could believe it was God's own greenhouse.

From this incomparable soil came its harvest of beauty... tulips, lilacs, the last remaining daffodilsand always the violets in unimaginable beauty and abundance...

From these my mother chose the best and directed us in how to make the May baskets... and makethem just so, festooned as always by a ribbon of the brightest hue. Then, without a card, shedispatched us on the task of delivery; to be put in front of entry doors, the doorbell rung, thenrunning fast away, never to be seen.

I asked her once why we didn't add a card, like florists do. She only smiled. I know why now... wewho delivered, laughing so, were the card... and our message was unmistakable, an image of youthand laughter, running through a panorama of flowers whose very fragrance I can smell to this

And she asked me 'Was I a good mother... ?' Mothers Day,Sunday May 8, 2011. by Dr. Jeffrey Lant

Today is Mother's Day in the United States. It occurred just the other day in England... and willoccur around the globe at various times all year long as millions of people make a point of honoringmother and making this day special for her. Those of us whose mother has passed on will take timethis day for remembrance... turning this into a day of bittersweet joy and sorrow. There will betears... but there will be smiles, too, as we recall every aspect of Mom with all the memories wecherish so. Yes, there most assuredly will be smiles, too... for Mom, even if gone, still has the powerto lighten our lives and soothe us, just as she did so often once upon a time...

Anna Jarvis and the creation of Mother's Day, 1914.

There have, of course, been mothers' days as long as there have been mothers. Kind-hearted fathersand grateful children undoubtedly saw to that... but one woman wanted more for mothers than acasual, occasional compliment. Her name was Anna Jarvis and she is the reason you are dropping byyour mom's today, your arms full of spring flowers and a myriad of affectionate tokens.

Anna Jarvis was born May 1, 1864 in Webster, Taylor County, West Virginia. She was the ninth ofeleven children born to Ann Marie and Granville Jarvis. From childhood Anna idolized her mother, and she often heard her say that she hoped someone one day would establish a memorial for allmothers, living and dead.

Anna always recalled one particular incident that drove home her mother's unceasing message. Thisincident occurred during a class prayer given by Mrs. Jarvis in Anna's receptive presence. Mrs.Jarvis' lesson was on "Mothers of the Bible". She closed the lesson with the prayer "I hope thatsomeone, sometime will found a memorial mothers day commemorating her for the matchlessservice she renders to humanity in every field of life. She is entitled to it."

Anna was just 12 years old... and not only did she never forget; she dedicated her life to achievingher mother's desire. We can now see the contours of this story. Mrs. Jarvis, kept perpetuallypregnant, laboring under a mountain of never- ending work, with a husband who never understoodall she did and how much he relied upon her... and a daughter completely receptive to her mother'surgent plea for recognition, assistance, and above all else -- love. Mrs. Ann Marie Jarvis poured it allinto her daughter's dutiful ears... and whatever her resentments, disappointments and moments ofchagrin... here at least she was abundantly rewarded. Her darling Anna saw to that...

After her mother's death on May 9, 1905, Anna, now living with siblings Claude and Lillie, beganher life's work, to create a day that would fulfill her mother's fervid desire. Fueled by love and theimage of her overworked, under loved (but never by Anna) mother... Anna put her active pen topaper, determined to achieve her goal of establishing a nationwide observance of Mother's Day.Nothing was going to stop her, and so from love came the focused, unceasing activity that movesmountains. She bombarded hundreds of legislators, executives, and businessmen on both state andnational levels.

Everyone was polite, muttering general words of support... but, despite her efforts and her skills as anotable and motivating speaker, Anna Jarvis was making no progress. Then one of the greatestmarketers in history, John Wanamaker, merchant prince, entrepreneur, philanthropist heard Annaand saw at once that her idea was good for Wanmaker's, good for business, good for America, andgood for mothers everywhere. It was a win-win situation all round...

With the inventive genius, power, influence and energy of John Wanamaker (1838-1922) behindher, Anna Jarvis and her idea moved onwards and upwards at incredible speed. On May 10, 190815,000 folks eager to Honor Thy Mother showed up at Wanamaker's Store Auditorium inPhiladelphia to hear Anna Jarvis speak. 10,000 of them had to be turned away for lack of room... Itwas a magnificent event... thereafter success followed success, Wanamaker saw to that; he was adynamo of a man, success his birthright.

By 1909, 45 states, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Canada and Mexico observed Mother's Day. People by themillions wore the white and red carnations the movement had adopted as a visible means of showingthat the wearer loved Mother and supported the cause. President Wilson proclaimed the firstnational Mother's Day in 1914. Everyone was happy now; a great goal had been achieved...everyone, that is, but Anna Jarvis.

Every time a florist sold a bouquet... every time a husband hard-pressed for time and with worries ofhis own bought a card... every time anyone made a buck off her Mother's Day, Anna Jarvis winced. And so as the number of participants grew into the millions, Jarvis who should have been thehappiest of all became the most miserable. This isn't at all what she had in mind for mothers... or thememory of her mother.

So began the sad decline of Anna Jarvis, the woman who now proceeded to burn every bridge andsunder her intimate connection to Mother's Day until with the death of her sister, she was entirelyalone... having nothing but memories and the assurance of her mother's love. And so she went on,bitter, alone, forgotten, neglected until at last she died, November 24, 1948, her mother's zealousdefender until the end...

... but too much so. I like to think that Anna's mother would have been glad for the card (even ifstore-bought), for the flowers (even if not picked from your own garden), and the candy you didn'thave time or talent to make... because each is a token of a love which cannot be celebrated toooften... the love of mother. And so if your mother is alive today, do something, anything, indicatingyou care.

And as you are lavishing these gifts on your one and only mother, give a thought to Anna Jarvis andher troubled spirit. She is the reason you have the happy task of turning this otherwise ordinary dayinto the reassurance your mother requires that yes, resoundingly yes, she was and yet is a goodmother, the best of all whatever her faults or limitations. All she really needs is to hear you say so....

Thoughts about Sunday and our threatened leisure time. by Dr. Jeffrey Lant

Today is Sunday, May 29, 2011. I shall celebrate it like millions of people worldwide by going towork, leaving me at the end of the day with only a tiny sliver of the leisure time my grandparents hadevery Sunday for their long lives. This continuing labor is not necessarily entirely beneficial...although many good things do in fact come from the Sunday tasks performed by its workersworldwide.

Today, therefore, I examine Sunday, its uses and, some suggested better uses. The objective, whichI set for myself as clearly as for you, is to examine a problem that grows larger for more peopleevery year: cannibalizing Sunday for the time that should be used for your necessary refreshmentand revitalization; sadly each year less of it is. In our frenetic times, we no longer, like Ponce deLeon (1474-1521), search for eternal youth. But we, who are prone to think Don Ponce a bit of afool, are engaged in our version of his odyssey. We know we need more time, and we are engaged inthe never-ending pursuit of ways to get it.

We are victims of work creep and leisure drain, two insidious, inter-related conditions that threatento turn us into drones who use improving their economic condition as their reason for changingSunday from free time to work time. "We have to," they insist.

When I hear this, I think of how monkeys are captured, by a very clever and inexpensive method. The hunter uses no guns or bullets; he wants his monkeys in good condition. Instead, he uses anarrow-lipped jar packed with cookies and other primate delights. This jar is placed in an areafrequented by the curious creatures; when they see piles of the sweet things they love best theythrust a paw down the jar... and are trapped.

Now here's the ironic thing: to regain their freedom, all the monkeys must do is open their paw andlet the delicious but dangerous goodie fall to the bottom of the jar. Their clenched paw and thegoodie inside have made them prisoners; merely opening their paw will free them. But the monkeyswill not unclench their paws, for that would cost them the dainties. And so they are well and trulycaptured by their own avarice and their desire for more.

And so we, too, are well and truly trapped and captured by the work we must do every day, work wecall completely urgent and necessary so as to preserve our life style. But at what cost? We are astrapped and baffled as the monkeys, and like them we might have chosen a less perilous way; oneabove all else preserving our own freedom.

How the concept of Sunday has evolved over the last 200 years.

Since the sweeping success of both the British and American evangelical movements at the end ofthe 18th century, three distinctly different Sundays have existed.

First was the evangelical Sunday, strictly reserved for God's Sabbath with absolutely no work of anykind permitted. England's Lord's Day Observance Society (founded 1831) epitomized the thinkingthat lead to strict Sabbatarianism. God had rested on the seventh day; you would therefore rest, andhumbly so, whether you wanted to or not.

As the widely believed verities of the evangelicals began to wane at the end of the nineteenthcentury (later in America) Sunday changed, too. Progressive humanists argued that strictSabbartarianism discriminated against the poor and laboring classes who had just Sunday andSunday only to enjoy all the educational and other amenities. Criticism now centered on the peoplewho advocated a strict and unyielding Sabbath, spent extolling God's virtues, to the neglect of

everything else. This new view saw Sunday as desirable and deserved leisure time, not merely theoccasion for weary strictness and total biblical focus.

This trend produced what came to be known as the "Continental Sunday", where leisure, all kinds ofleisure, was wanted and indulged, the general sentiment being that the common folks worked hardfor this day and deserved its delights and amenities. And delights and amenities they got as thegolden days of the Continental Sunday with its laissez fair ways and relaxed conditions freed thenation from stringent rules and restrictions, mostly emanating from churches of an evangelicalpersuasion.

So matters might have stayed if matters of this kind are ever unchanging. But the leisured, recreational, family-centered delights of Continental Sundays were changed and challenged by suchcultural factors as the desire to make more money to acquire the things money can buy. In periods ofeconomic difficulty this factor changed again; in such periods people had to take Sunday and turn itinto additional income, never mind the leisure that was thereby sacrificed -- and was so desirable andneeded.

Now the nibbling process is at work on the grand, happy, burden-lifting Continental Sunday, aninstitution so needed by the hard-working folk on Planet Earth you might be excused for thinkingthis new, third phase had to be an improvement on what we already had.

But is it?

It is a sign of the times that otherwise sensible earthlings swap leisure and necessary recreation formoney, money, and more money... and mountains of things we (for I include myself) do not need...but must acquire notwithstanding.

This is a deal made with the devil.... and you are one of the prime signatories... as I am.

It is time, here and now, to launch our bid for freedom... our July 4, Cinco de Mayo, Bastille Day...for we are as oppressed, burdened and weary of abuse as they for all that we have done this toourselves.

We, like our revolutionary brethren of yore, must strike now, not a moment later, whilst we stillhave the good sense and strong arm to bring back, to all who desire and need it, our belovedContinental Sunday and the necessary leisure and relief we must have to live a life of balance andequilibrium, not killing stress in all its destructiveness.

All this is no small thing, nothing to be considered casually, without your full attention and concern. We humans are so finely crafted that we need leisure to reach our full potential and maintain ourhealth and splendid spirits which are now and will always be the foundation of our success.

So, now, take the pledge.

Pledge! To fight work creep and leisure drain. Pledge!

Pledge! To think whether the work and its emoluments are more important than the revitalizingleisure you give up. Pledge!

Pledge! To resolve to use leisure as a means of strengthening your life, increasing its span and itsquality. Pledge!

Pledge! To keep sacrosanct your special time apart from work, your carefree zone. It is essential forlife's highest quality. Pledge!

Now sign and date this manifesto of common sense and resolute purpose. Your life in all its aspectswill improve as soon as you do... the very moment you do!

How a perky housewife from Minnesota gets up to 5,000responses to her blog each and every day... and how youcan do as well, or even better! By Dr. Jeffrey Lant

Author's program note. This is the tale of someone who has achieved the kind of astonishing onlineresults and amazing ongoing traffic that you wish you had. Her name is Diane Dohrn and she's oneof the handful of residents from Grygla, Minnesota (population 228)... a place that looks like asuburb of Garrison Keillor's Lake Wobegon... the town where all the women are strong, all the menare good looking, and all the children are above average.

For this article, therefore, I selected some music by perennial local favorite Lawrence Welk and hisChampagne Music Makers. Go to any search engine and find his signature tune "Bubbles in thewine." Sit back in your recliner and enjoy the effervescence of the lady from Grygla and a successstory that'll make you smile....with all the necessary details so you can match her already great andalways growing success.

When I first met Diane...

I first met Diane Dohrn a little over 18 months ago when she came to me seeking my help andadvice about how to succeed online. Frankly, she needed all of the assistance I could provide; shewas in a bad way just then in her life and fortune. She told me a story so typical on the 'net as to beendemic... She'd been in this opportunity; she'd been in that. She had paid out thousands and reapedpennies. She had no tools for success... no traffic... she'd never had a moment's training... and, untilmy advent, she'd had absolutely no one to assist her. And now she was desperate... with acute familydifficulties... and her own disability to contend with. In short, she had nowhere to go but... up.

At bottom, she still had two crucial advantages: 1) me and 2) her own "never say die" determinationthat I came to know so well -- and admire.

She was willing to listen...

People with problems say they want solutions... but in fact what they really want is the opportunityto vent... to bewail their lot in the world, do the "poor little me" thing... then rant and rant some more.In short they don't really want a solution... they want a willing ear to chew on. But that's not howmoney gets made. I told Diane, who came with some of these weepies, that I'd help IF and ONLY ifshe would focus on a series of online business building steps, including specific traffic buildingexercises she would need to do daily to grow the all-important traffic.

She agreed... and she kept her bargain, although it was sometimes tough for the lady when Iabsolutely refused to listen to items from the latest installment of "As Diane's World Turns..."

She needed traffic... traffic...more traffic... and even more traffic. And that was where I kept ourfocus, with lessons on the effective use of traffic exchanges, safe lists, forums, and article directorieswhere you develop crucial back links. An avid learner, she did herself the favor of listening to whatI said, asking intelligent questions, and doing the tasks. To her surprise (but not mine) she began togenerate traffic at once... and more each day. Especially as she began to understand and master oneabsolutely crucial traffic generating tool, which in due time she was to make her own traffic-generating machine. This marvel was the blog... and right from the start, it proved to be her forte somuch so that I quickly saw that Diane Dorhn was not just going to master the blog, develop hugedaily traffic from it... but become one of the true blog titans of the 'net. Now she had my fullattention, and we worked together less as teacher and student... but rather as 2 colleagues not just

interested in how far the lady could take this.... but obsessed with the desire to raise Diane and hertraffic to hitherto unimaginable heights. We were rockin' and rollin'... Note for the blogless.

If you're an online entrepreneur of any kind, trying to get huge daily traffic, you MUST have a blog. This is not negotiable. You see, a blog is your personal communications vehicle. It enables you topresent and deliver your message. It is 100 percent you, 100 percent of the time. Say what youwant, say it just the way you want.

The key to a blog is ensuring that it offers readers the best possible content. "Content is king," BillGates famously said. That's the kind of content you must have for your blog; content that getspeople to read -- and respond. Diane was fretful about this point. She worried that she have the timeor skills to produce the high level content her blog and readers required daily. What could she do?

That's where I really entered the picture, as an essential element of her success... for you see, Iproduce the champagne of blog content, and I produce it in 27 information categories from politicsthrough ecology and just plain good stories; my content is sophisticated, readable, intelligent, timely, well written... and (most significantly) it gets astonishingly high reader response, as Dianecame to know at once; right from the start these articles (and I write a new one each day) generatedresponses... lots and lots of them.

Thus, each day Diane starts by selecting the article of the day, the article that will anchor that blogand be its focus.

Then she follows a daily regime which she has followed, refined and developed over time. It goeslike this:

1) Check Kstats first thing. Additionally check it several times each day to see the results on everyarticle she has ever blogged.

2) Prepare today's article. Select it, copy to Word. Then add all the necessary videos, links, trackbacks, pictures, etc. Diane knows that even great copy is better, more arresting, with suchfeatures. (By the way she keeps all this on Wordpad.)

3) She looks up the subject of the designated article in any major search engine. She likes to do thisso she can make an intelligent comment on the article.

4) Before she sends her daily blog (first thing each morning), she visits other blogs to get ideas forthe improvement of hers. She never assumes she has a monopoly on this subject; she looks for whatothers can tell her about her blog, the better to improve it. She told me she visits between 35-50blogs daily, to keep up on developments in the field, get ideas, inspiration, etc. I believe it!

5) She then reads through this daily blog post a couple of times looking for typos and so on. Ajournalist's daughter, she is a stickler for mistake-free copy... as a result her blog is clean, withoutthe distracting errors made by other, less careful, blogsters.

6) Her blog always contains a great offer. Diane never forgets that the purpose of a blog is to makemoney, and so she works hard on her offers... both on the ones she makes in her blog... and the onesshe makes when her readers respond. Because of the volume of her responses, she works on this forhours each day... and that really pays off...

One more thing she does...

Diane generously insists on my role in her success. She points to what she calls her "Internet bible"which contains Internet traffic, marketing and business building tips I have given her, live in myonline programs and through my huge library of blog articles. She says, "When I need a lift, this iswhere I go. They are priceless."

That's the woman all over...

The truth is, the person who has contributed the most to Diane's success is... Diane. She's risen fromno traffic at all to getting up to 5,000 responses EACH and EVERY day, without exception. Herown personality and approach to her thousands of blog readers is what makes the critical difference. She's a small town Iowa girl and has retained the sincerity, empathy and quintessential Midwesterndirectness and candor of the heartland. Diane is authentic to her fingertips. She likes people; likes tohelp... and this shines through.

Now thousands of new people will learn about Diane and take heart if, like most online, they havehad absolutely no success. That can and should stop now... for the best thing Diane can do is makeyou understand that the huge results she has already received are fully duplicatable and can be doneoff the kitchen table. Only one thing is missing from this system... and that is the great heart of thelady herself. That is all her own... and we admire her all the more for what she does with it to help somany for she remembers her roots and the help she got when she needed it most. This is why withher blog, she has not got just readers... but friends.
