A word from the president & CEO ofHolzer Consolidated Health Systems

To the communities we serve:

This year, 2010, marks the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Holzer Hospital in downtown Gallipolis,Ohio. It is with great pride that I am able to be a part of such an outstanding healthcare system.

From a humble beginning of a seven-bed facility, Holzer Consolidated Health Systems is now a multi-spe-cialty and multi-county healthcare system, with hospitals located in Gallipolis and Jackson, a nursing care facil-ity and two assisted living facilities, a cancer center as well as a cardiovascular institute and many more programsand services extending throughout the Ohio River Valley.

It all began when Dr. Charles E. Holzer, Sr. came to the Ohio Hospital for Epileptics, currently GallipolisDevelopmental Center (GDC), after completing his studies at the Starling-Loving Medical College (now OhioState University). His original intention was to spend only one year in Gallipolis for intensive surgical experi-ence. During this time, as the only surgeon in the region, he was often asked to perform emergency operationsoutside the scope of, and in addition to his duties at the OHE. He created such a positive impression, he wasinvited to remain in Gallipolis and open a medical practice.A legacy was born.

Today, we are continuing to expand our technology and medical services to provide the highest level ofhealthcare available for our communities. In addition to the advanced technology, Holzer Health Systems con-tinues to offer our most important aspect, the Holzer Difference, going above and beyond expectations withhometown caring upon which our communities pride themselves. We are your friends and neighbors, and weare here for you.We thank you for your support of our healthcare services.

In addition to our expansions, we are furthering our medical specialties by moving forward with our inte-gration with Holzer Clinic. This integration will truly make our two organizations into one healthcare systemwith one vision — a vision that began 100 years ago. “One Dream, One Team, One Holzer.”

Our healthcare system was created upon a solid foundation, enabling us to continue growth, even through-out these economic times. We are blessed to have a strong past, present, and anticipate a successful future forour employees and the communities we serve. Join us in commemorating our 100th anniversary while reflect-ing on our past, but most importantly, looking forward to our future.

Sincerely,

Brent A. SaundersPresident/CEOHolzer Consolidated Health Systems

Acentury ago, healthcare in southeastern Ohio had a humble beginningwith a seven-bed hospital opening at 507 Second Avenue in down-town Gallipolis. Dr. Charles E. Holzer, Sr. opened the first privatehospital in the region, which has grown into the multi-facility health-care system today, Holzer Consolidated Health System.

Dr. Holzer came to the area in 1909 as a resident surgeon for what is now theGallipolis Developmental Center (GDC). After what was supposed to be only ayear of intensive surgical experience, Dr. Holzer soon recognized the need for ahealthcare facility. His vision was truly the beginning of medical and hospital lead-ership by the Holzer family in our community.

In 1914, Dr. Holzer was introduced to Alma Vornholt, a nurse, who quicklycaught his eye and attention. They were soon married and the dream of providing

healthcare services in the southeastern Ohio valleyquickly became a joint venture.

As cited by Thomas Morgan, MD, in his HolzerHeritage book, “We can fondly remember the fascinat-ing stories related by Mrs. Holzer, Sr. More than once, she and Dr. Holzer would respond to a call from WestVirginia by loading a surgical pack into a rowboat. Theywould row across the river and perform surgery on adining room table under chloroform anesthesia, often bylight of a kerosene lamp, held by a family member.”

The increasing demand of Dr. Holzer’s services quick-ly lead to the need of a larger facility. In 1917, HolzerHospital was opened on Cedar Street. However, soonafter becoming operational, Dr. Holzer was called toWorld War I. For more than a year, the Hospital waitedfor Dr. Holzer to return. As soon as an armistice wasreached, Dr. Holzer returned home to resume his prac-tice. Holzer Hospital grew to 53 beds in 1926 and in aseries of additions through 1960, grew to be a 175 bed,24 bassinet hospital.

Not only did Dr. Holzer lend his vision to medicalneeds for the people of our community, he was instru-mental in accomplishing many significant developmentsto benefit the entire area. He was a driving force behindthe building of the original Silver Bridge, connectingGallipolis and Point Pleasant, which was constructed in1928. In 1927 he purchased property north of town adja-cent to the river to establish the first airport, HolzerField. And in 1935, the first airplane ambulance in thestate of Ohio was offered. This air strip was utilized formany years, until the present airport opened inDecember of 1967.

In addition, what is now the Our House Museum onFirst Avenue was originally a tavern, owned and operated by Henry Cushing. Dr.and Mrs. Holzer, Sr. restored Our House and presented it as a gift to the OhioHistorical Society where it continues today to be a focal point of activity and a bea-con of Gallipolis history.

To ensure a lasting effect on the delivery of healthcare in our area, Dr. and Mrs.Holzer, Sr. continued to make medical investments. In 1920, they founded theHolzer School of Nursing, continuing today to train nurses as the Holzer Collegeof Nursing at the University of Rio Grande. In 1929, he established the HolzerHospital Foundation, to assure and perpetuate the further development of Holzer

Holzer Clinic: Rich history, even brighter future

Established in 1949 by Dr.Charles E. Holzer, Jr.,Holzer Clinic has grownover the years to becomethe solid, well-known

multi-specialty group practice thatexists today. The history is rich with along-standing commitment of support-ing the citizens and communities inwhich it serves.

One could not speak of the history ofHolzer Clinic without recognizing thatit all began with the vision of Dr.Charles E. Holzer, Sr., the developmentof Holzer Hospital in 1910, and his ded-ication of providing the highest qualitymedical care possible to the residents ofthe area. His foresight and compassiongave way to the landscape of healthcarein the region today.

The 1930s and ’40s were a time whenadvances in medicine were expandingrapidly. Believing that the future prac-tice of good healthcare would be of aclinic group type endeavor, two physi-cians employed by Dr. Holzer, Sr. andthe Holzer Hospital branched off andjoined with a third local physician form-ing what was known at the time as theGallipolis Clinic in 1939. Dr. Norval A.Martin, Dr. Homer B. Thomas, and Dr.Leo C. Bean began practicing at 52State Street with a small laboratory, adrug dispensary, and x-ray facilities toassist in diagnosis of disease. The con-cept of a clinic style practice was popu-lar with the residents of the area and theclinic increased in size.

In 1949, Dr. Charles E. Holzer, Jr.returned to Gallipolis to further hisfather’s vision. Recognizing the emerg-ing needs of an industrializing area, Dr.Holzer, Jr. aided by Miss Alma

McCormick, Family Counselor,Hospital Administrator, ExecutiveSecretary and Record Librarian, urgedthe transfer of ownership of theHospital to a community foundationand recommended formation of a med-ical partnership to provide professionalstaff.

As a result, the transfer of the hospitalownership to the residents of the areacame into being and the Holzer HospitalFoundation was formed.

The physicians who practiced atHolzer Hospital at the time formed theirown group practice and assumed thename Holzer Clinic. The original part-ners being Dr. Charles E. Holzer, Sr.,Dr. Charles E. Holzer, Jr., Dr. OttoVornholt, Dr. Paul C. Foster, Dr. MarcusMagnussen, Dr. William Ashe and Dr.Jacob Weinberger.

Through the years the communitydemand and staff of the Holzer Clinicgrew rapidly. By November of 1959,the physician group which had formedthe Gallipolis Clinic had grown as well. They had moved into a new facilitylocated at the corner of Fourth andSycamore Streets and changed theirname to the Gallipolis Medical Clinic.

During the early 1960s, both theHolzer Clinic and the GallipolisMedical Clinic continued to experiencemarked growth. By the mid 1960s, thedevelopment of the medical communityin the area necessitated new facilitiesbut with increasing governmental inter-est and activity in the health industry, collaboration between the physiciansand hospital entity would be necessary.

The community found itself econom-ically unable to fund new facilities andthe planning agency of the federal gov-

ernment refused to financially supportdevelopment without a unifiedapproach to healthcare in the area.Holzer Clinic and the GallipolisMedical Clinic joined forces and suc-ceeded in ensuring Gallipolis wouldcontinue to be the region’s center forspecialized medical services.

In 1968, the practitioners of theGallipolis Medical Center Clinic as wellas three independent family practition-ers merged with the 22 specialists ofHolzer Clinic forming the entity thatexists today. Since that time, HolzerClinic has grown to include 10 locations

throughout southeastern Ohio and west-ern West Virginia including three state-of-the-art Ambulatory Surgery Centersand six digital diagnostic imaging cen-ters equipped with the latest technology.

Today, Holzer Clinic provides ser-vices in more than 30 areas of expertiseincluding Allergy/Asthma,Audiology/Hearing Aids, Cancer care,Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery,Child & Adolescent Psychiatry,Chiropractic, Dermatology,Ear/Nose/Throat, Endocrinology,

In 2001, Holzer CardiovascularInstitute (HCI) became a reality.Established as a joint venturebetween Holzer Medical Centerand Holzer Clinic, HCI was

designed to provide state-of-the-art car-diology care for the communities weserve. There is no need to travel for car-diac care when a high technology car-diovascular institute is located so closeto home.

Your treatment begins with some ofthe most advanced diagnostic mea-sures available. In our cardiac cathlab, we utilize digital imaging equip-ment to visualize and diagnose coro-nary artery disease. In 2005 HCI brought the Mended

Hearts to our “Heart Team.” TheMended Hearts is a volunteer basednational organization affiliated withthe American Heart Association. Eachmember has either been an open heartpatient themselves or a supportingspouse to an open heart patient. Thishas proven to be exceptionally benefi-cial to patients in their time of recov-ery, and even more helpful to the fam-ily during the “waiting time” theyexperience.

The Holzer Cardiovascular Institutehas assembled a staff of the region’smost qualified cardiac health careprofessionals. Using the most techno-logically advanced cardiac equipmentand procedures, the HolzerCardiovascular Institute is devoted todelivering the very best in cardiaccare.

that service has developed into HolzerWeight Loss Solutions (HWLS), whichwithin the past year was named anAmerican Society for Metabolic andBariatric Surgery (ASMBS) BariatricSurgery Center of Excellence®(BSCOE). The ASMBS BSCOE desig-nation recognizes surgical programswith a demonstrated track record offavorable outcomes in weight losssurgery.

Holzer Weight Loss Solutions(HWLS) has a multi-disciplinary pro-gram including the Lap-Band System, behavior modification, nutrition and fit-ness counseling. With all of these com-ponents working together, patients canreach the goal of at least 75 percentexcess weight loss and keep it off per-manently. Our dedicated staff includes:Surgeons Dr. Michael Canady and Dr.Ronn Grandia, an RN (on call 24/7),Dietician, Program Director andMedical Weight Loss Physician, Dr.John Ellison. The team at HWLS iscommitted to a successful weight lossjourney for our patients. Our surgeonsare board certified with significantexperience. Our program includes fol-low-up support group sessions providedmonthly.

Obesity has become a significantnational health issue, with the Centersfor Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) reporting that 66 percent of allUS adults are overweight or obese.Morbid obesity is closely correlatedwith a number of serious conditions thatseverely undermine the health of over-weight patients, including heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.Bariatric surgery, when performed cor-rectly, can help obese patients managethese conditions. By definition, sur-

geons with ASMBS Bariatric SurgeryCenter of Excellence designation prac-tice only top quality care, ensuring effi-cacy of the procedure with each patientto the best of their abilities. At HolzerWeight Loss Solutions, our surgeonsdemonstrate this willingness to take theextra step with our multi-disciplinaryprogram and with all of these compo-nents working together, patients canreach their weight loss goal. Throughoutthe program, our patients are treatedwith compassion and dignity, becausewe understand the challenges thatpatients face attempting to lose weight.

According to a report released in 2007by the Agency for Healthcare Researchand Quality, the number of bariatricsurgeries has grown from 16,000 proce-dures in 1992 to 220,000 in 2009. Facedwith clinical evidence that the mostexperienced and best-run bariatricsurgery programs have by far the lowestrates of complications, the ASMBSBariatric Surgery Centers of Excellenceprogram was created to recognizebariatric surgery centers that performwell and to help surgeons and hospitalscontinue to improve the quality andsafety of care provided.

“Due to the increasing prevalence ofmorbid obesity and the inherent risksand the opportunities available to great-ly improve the health of this patientpopulation, we recognize the need toimplement a systematic approach toimproving quality,” said Pam Dye, RN,BSN, Program Director of HolzerWeight Loss Solutions. “At HolzerWeight Loss Solutions we believe thatthe ASMBS Bariatric Surgery Centersof Excellence program will serve as acatalyst, driving strong programs to geteven better. We have done our part, andwe urge our peers to join the effort.”

Hospital. Twenty years later, Dr.Holzer would give the Hospital tothe community to be administeredby a Board of Trustees, represent-ing the then five-county patientservice area.

Dr. Charles E. Holzer, Jr. fol-lowed in his father’s footsteps andchose the medical field. In 1946, hereturned to Gallipolis following hisgraduation from Cornell MedicalSchool and a surgical residency atthe University of Cincinnati to joinhis father. At his urging, a medicalpartnership known as the HolzerClinic was formed in 1950 with sixphysicians: Drs. Charles E. Holzer,Sr., Charles E. Holzer, Jr., MarcusJ. Magnussen, William F. Ashe,Otto A. Vornholt and JacobWeinberger. Dr. Holzer Jr. contin-ued his father’s leadership and wasnamed Chief of Staff in 1948 andcontinued in that role until 1989.

Dr. Charles, as he was reverentlyreferred to, shared his father’s lim-itless vision and dedication, touch-ing and inspiring many lives, bothinside and outside the Hospital’swalls. He truly cared about themembers of our community, bothas a physician and as an individual.

In 1968, Holzer Hospital and theMedical Center Hospital merged,as did Holzer Clinic and GallipolisClinic, to become Holzer MedicalCenter Clinic. From this uniting oftop community leaders, a continuedstrength and long term plan ofexpansion became an actuality andthe new Holzer Medical Center andHolzer Clinic were opened onJackson Pike, and dedicated to the

community on April 17, 1972.Throughout the years, many
