garage doors are the largest

moving object in your home, and they require regular maintenance. garage doors and garage door operators are affected by cold weather in a variety of ways. Frigid temperatures, snow, ice and salt all take a toll on the garage door in the winter. A garage door tune-up from overhead door co of corbin is a great first step to preventing any garage door winter “down time”. It is a wise investment to have us perform a thorough tune-up prior to the onset of cold weather. our technicians will inspect, lubricate and adjust, if needed, all moving parts of any brand of garage door and automatic operator. There are a few dIY steps that homeowners can do themselves to help prevent some problems.

rollers, sPrings and Track

As temperatures drop, heavier oil and grease lubricants have a

tendency to harden up. The door and operator may run rough with more friction and squeaking. You can fix this common winter maintenance issue by applying a small amount of high quality rust inhibiting spray lubricant to all moving parts (hinges, metal rollers, bearings, springs and the chain on operator rails.) Lubricants like wd-40 are not recommended, as it will breakdown the grease in the rollers. some operators are belt driven or screw driven and that would require a special type of grease. we recommend these lubricating steps be done at least twice a year. we sell high quality, very affordable door and operator lubricants at our office.

Most garage doors have weather stripping around the top, sides and bottom of the door. Homeowners should inspect the seal to ensure that air is not seeping in around the door, thus causing energy depletion. Falling temperatures

during winter months can cause water to freeze around the bottom seal of a closed garage door. This can cause the bottom seal to peel or rip as the garage door opens. To prevent this, keep the front of the garage door clear of snow or ice. The weather seal is intended to keep cold air out, and if damaged, should be replaced to prevent cold air seeping in and uninvited pests. If your door seal is damaged we have many different styles available for replacement at our office.

a few lasT reMinders You may want to

check the batteries in your transmitters and outside keypad. cold weather weakens batteries and they always go out at a bad time. Most garage door operators use a 40 watt Appliance bulb, so you may want to have a few of those on hand as well.

These are just a few of things that homeowners can do to maintain and extend the life of their garage

door and operator. And remember that overhead door co of corbin is always here

to help anyway we can. we are located at 3718 cumberland Falls Hwy, corbin ky.

Preventative Maintenance

Anyone who has been the

victim of a home robbery knows how unpleasant it is to imagine strangers rummaging through their belongings. Fortunately, there is an effective way to discourage thieves from breaking into your home: install an alarm system.

choose your sysTeMThere’s a lot of choice

when it comes time to install an alarm system. In fact, dozens of companies want to protect your home from theft and home invasions. Beware of sellers who put a lot of pressure on you to close a sale quickly. Before making a decision, it’s always best to compare estimates from three different companies.

The advanTagesAn alarm system

connected to a call center allows you to get help quickly in case of difficulty. In addition to giving you peace of mind and being easy to use, it can also substantially reduce the cost of your home insurance. some companies also offer to connect your alarm system to your smartphone. That way, you’ll know the state of your system and all the comings and goings in your home in real time.

false alarMsMake sure everyone

who has access to your property understands how the alarm system operates. False alarms are very common and disruptive to call centers, but with a thorough understanding of the

system they can easily be avoided.

In the chilly season, it’s no fun hav-ing to walk barefoot on a cold floor during your nightly trip to the bath-room. If you dream of being able to walk around your home without having to bother putting on a big pair of slippers, why not have underfloor heating installed?

guaranTeed coMforTUnderfloor heating usually works with an electric radiant system. This

type of heating has several advan-tages in terms of comfort and ener-gy savings. When a room is heated with an underfloor system, the ambient temperature is the same from floor to ceiling. In addition, all the heat doesn’t escape when you open the door of the room.

flooringsFor maximum efficiency, choose ceramic tiling or natural stone.

These are ideal for storing and redistributing heat. That said, the compatibility of other floorings var-ies depending on what type it is. So before installing underfloor heating, check with the retailer to make sure the flooring you’re considering will perform efficiently. Also, keep in mind that the job of connecting the heating system to your home’s elec-trical circuit should be done by an electrician.

Here are just a few of the benefits of underfloor heating:—The system is completely invisi-ble.—It doesn’t require any form of maintenance.—It’s silent and doesn’t vibrate.—It doesn’t spread dust or germs.—It doesn’t dry the air the way other systems do.—It uses up to 25 percent less ener-gy than regular electric baseboards.

DESIGNING A HOME GYMGET PHYSICAL

A home gym you enjoy using will motivate you to train more oftenThere are many reasons why people don’t get to exer-cise at a gym on a regular basis. The parents of young children, shift workers and people who live far from urban areas aren’t often found in fitness centers. Other people don’t like the atmosphere of these plac-es, which is sometimes very competitive, or they feel uncomfortable about exercising in public. For all these reasons, a home gym is an excellent option for any-one who wants to keep fit.

buying your equiPMenTIt is possible to create a home gym without it costing you an arm and a leg. Retailers offer a wide range of bodybuilding and cardiovascular exercise machines for all budgets. A less expensive option is to buy used equipment. You’ll find a wide range of options in the classified ads section of your local newspaper or through an online classifieds website.

Plan and decoraTeAll too often, people set up a personal training space without giving it much thought. They randomly pile exercise machines and accessories into the basement and then over the following weeks or months, they feel guilty because they’re using them less and less often.

To stay motivated and exercise on a regular basis, attractive surroundings are a must. Get started by looking for inspiration from pictures of private gyms found in decorating magazines and on the Internet. Paint the walls in bright colors and hang some mirrors. Let your creativity run wild by putting up wall murals or wallpaper with original patterns. Another great idea is to install a chalkboard on which you can write your results and a few words of encouragement.

Artisans have been creating practical and beautiful objects from time immemorial. Some of these careful-ly cared for objects increase in value over the years and can become real treasures for avid collectors. Apart from enjoying the pleasures of decorating with antiques, many people like learning about the heri-tage and history of a culture through their collections. Here are a few tips for people who aren’t yet familiar with the fascinating and popular world of antiques.

The first thing to keep in mind is that it isn’t necessary to invest in an imposing piece of antique furniture to add cachet to your decor. Start your collection of treasures from the past by buying small pieces. Leather-bound books from the early 20th century or black and white photographs are a simple way to add a historical touch to your home without breaking the bank.

Visit a few antique dealers in your area to see which kinds of items catch your eye. Take some time and try to imagine these pieces in your home. Consult an experienced collector if you’re in any doubt about the value of an expensive item.

When you fall in love with a particular antique, it’s time to negotiate. Experts suggest making an initial offer of two-thirds of the listed price. You’ll probably figure out if you have a chance of buying the item at a lower price just from the seller’s reaction. Enjoy your treasure hunting!
