IamhonouredagaintobegiventheopportunitytoperformtheCommodorerolefortheWMYC.AttheAGMinAugustmanyoftheManagementCommitteeputtheirhandsuptodoatleastanotheryearintheirroles.AsateamwelookforwardtoleadingtheClubinaresponsibleandefficientmannerforanotheryearandwillalwayswelcomesupportandideasfromMembers.Asitturnedout,acoupleofkeyrolesonthecommitteewerenotfilled–ChairpersonsfortheSocialandBoatingsub-committees.Thisyearwewouldliketodothingsalittledifferentlybyformingthesetwosub-committeesfirstandthenidentifyingcandidatesforChairpersonforeach.IfyouareinterestedinhavingsomeinputonthesocialeventsandcalendarfortheCluborfeelyoucouldcontributetohowboatingactivities(mainlycruising)couldbeconducted,pleasemakecontactwithmethroughtheCluboffice.WearekeentogetawiderrangeofideastoinfluencethewayweplananddelivertheseopportunitiestoMembers.Wewouldparticularlyappreciatemorefemalepointsofviewtoguidethethinkingintheseareas.Onceagain,amajorfocusoftheClubwillbetostayontopofmaintenanceactivitiesandwewillalsobelookingatreplacementofsomeoldandtiredfittingsandfurniturearoundtheclubhouse.Wehaverecentlybeguninvestigationsandnegotiationsaroundimprovingtheboatrampandpontoonfacilities,withtheintentiontoimproveusabilityandsafetyofthisfacility.WewillbelookingtosecurefundingbygrantstohelpmeettheanticipatedsubstantialcostsOnceagain,wehavestagedaverysuccessfulStHelenaCupevent,bothonthewaterandaroundtheclubhouse.ItprovidesasignificantfinancialboosttotheClubeachyearandallowsmanyclubmemberstobeinvolved.Asusualwehadmanymembersandtheirfamilieshelpingout,providingsupportboatsonthecourseandhelparoundtheclubhouseallweekend.Ontopofthisourstaffintheofficeputinmanyhourssortingouttheevent.TheMarinastafftakecareofberthingmanyvisitingyachtsandourbarstaffputinlonghourstoensurethepartyisenjoyedbyall.ThefeedbackIreceiveeachyearfromvisitingsailorsabouthowwellwerunthiseventandhowfriendlyourclubiseachtimetheyvisit,makesmeproudofthewillingandgenerousmembershipoftheWMYCandWMSCandalltheteamsupportingtheClub.IhopeeveryonehasagreatChristmasandNewYearperiod.Thedatesofthekidsandadultsendofyearcelebrationsareinthisissue.Hopetoseemanyofyouattheseevents.StaysafeonthewaterJohnVandermaatonHazeCommodoreWMYC

WMSC Sailing Chairman’s Report Nautilus Marine St Helena CupThisyearweheldthe42ndStHelenaCup.Afleetof82entrantsenjoyedcompetitionandcamaraderieacrosstheweekendof6&7October.Thiseventnowhasasignificanttraditionbehinditwhichwasenthusiasticallyacknowledgedbyoneofourregularplacegetters,DavidLambournefromLambourini2.Thehistoryofthesilvercupwhichistheperpetualtrophyhasanevenlongerhistorydatingfromthe1890swhenitwaspresentedtoMickPatterson’sgrandfather.Thistraditioncontinueswiththegreatcontributionoffantasticvolunteersonthestartandcourseboats,radiooperator,theracecommitteeorganisers,thehandicappersandofcourse,ourPrincipalRaceOfficer,GregDoolan.Generousthankstoyouall.Oursponsorsgenerouslyprovidesupportwhichallowssaferaceorganisationandsubstantialprizeswhichaddtotheatmosphereandattractivenessoftherace.Manyofoursponsorshavebeenwithusforyearsandtheyare;

Art Competition report

WMYCArtCompetition2018Report.GreetingsfellowWMYCmembersThisyear’sArtshowwasnothingshortof‘spectacular’.TheArtworkswereoftopquality. Our judgeswere impressedandsowereourmembersandeveryonewhovisitedtheWMYCArtGalleryformerlyknownastheWMYCClubhouse.OurcaterersfortheGalaopeningwere‘TheSmallCrop’.Almost200guestsattendedtheopeningnightandthecanapéswereexcellentTheSmallCrop’s‘neverending’grazingtableprovedmostpopularfortheseriousgrazersandgourmetburgerstoppedupthehungryandtemptedtherest.Our musicians ‘The Angel Strings’ were heavenly and the ambience theycreatedcomplimentedthesuperbArtworksandwholesomedeliciousfoodthatwasonoffer.



TwoArtistsGrahamWSmithandRoyTeschdonatedwonderfulworkstoberaffledforourchosencharity‘SailsatBayside’Itakethisopportunitytoapplaudthemfortheirkindness.CrPeterCummingopenedtheGalaandalsodonatedtotheworthycauseasdidourClubPatronJoanPeaseandSirrometWinesalsocameonboardwithafineassortmentofwines.WeareindebttothesekindsponsorsandIaskyoutosupportthemwheneveryoucan.WehadoveronehundredArtworksentered.Choosingawinnerfromthepaintings,sculptures,printsandphotographswasdifficultbutourWMYCmembersdecidedonthefabulouswatercolour‘MorningLight–ManlyMarina’bySzczepanUrbanowicz.

Club Crew World Championship Szeged Hungary

2018

In July 2018, 57 paddlers and a support crew of 15 from the Manly Dragon Boat Club travelled to Szeged Hungary to contest the 11th Club Crew World Championships. This culminated 2 years of preparation for the crew who were joined by 6200 athletes from 140 clubs across 32 different countries. This was the largest dragon boat regatta to be conducted anywhere – needless to say the competition was fierce. Manly Dragons can hold their heads high as in each of the 15 categories contested, the crews made the minor or major final. The club was the top ranked Australian Club at the competition and ranked 17th in the world. As a matter of interest, in the top 17 clubs, there was 1 Australian Club, 1 American, 2 Hungarian and 13 Canadian.

The impressive performance by our Senior B (50+) Women saw them take out a BRONZE medal in the 500m large boat division pic below, and a Club Crew World Championship GOLD medal in the 200m large boat division. The Senior B ladies capped off the competition by winning a SILVER medal with the men in the large boat 200m mixed crew division.

Manly Dragon Boats Congratulations to the coaching team led by Mike Martin. The execution of their training program leading up to this event was conducted superbly. The discipline and cohesiveness demonstrated by the crew is testament to the preparation delivered by the coaching crew. The crew was very pleased with the support shown by major sponsor Margaret Vote of Raine & Horne Wynnum Manly who travelled to the regatta to cheer on the crew – thanks Margaret.

downhillwaitingforasafe,clearrespectableplacetopass.Thecarbehindmehasmurderinhiseyesandtootsme.Suchisfate.Iseeaclearrunandpasskeepingmy1.5metresawayfromthecolumnoflycracladbrightlycolouredladsandlassies.SomehowImanagetostayalmostinmylaneandavoidtheon-comingtrafficofdementeddriverswhofeartheWrathofBossshouldtheyarriveatworkortheirkidsatsportonenanosecondlate.IwretchslightlyasIpassaratherrotundgentleman,whoselimeandpurplelycraisstrainingattheseamsinitsdoomedefforttocontainanenormoustummy.Hisearsarepluggedwithphonesconnectedtoa‘device’.Mostofthemarehard-wiredtodevicesthesedays,neverrealisinga‘device’isaconceit,amotto,aschemeaswellasanannoyingpieceofelectronicjunkusedtoburysoundwithmoresound,therebyrenderingthebleatingofmotoristsinaudible.Wepassthislotsafely.ThereallynastystretchisKamikazecauseway–whereRickertRoadpassesoverTingalpaCreek.Thebridgeisonelaneeachway,thesouthernlanecoveredbybranchesfromborderingmangroves,veryprettytotheobserver.Butalsoanotherperiltothedriverandanycyclistdeterminedtobecomeamartyrinhiseffortstoenforcehisrighttorideonthisstretchofroad.However,thegovernmentinitswisdom,hasbuiltabeautifuldualcycleandpedestrianwayonthenorthernsideofthebridge,butapreciousandimmortalfewinsistonusingtheroadway,leavingnowherefortraffictogounlesstheymounttheoncominglane.Putonauniform,evenifitisinlycra,andcommonsensedisappears.ThenextperilistheturnatthelightsontoGreencampRoadwheretwolanesbecomeone,addingchallengesforthespeedy,thelycracladandthedementedworker/parent/studentwithadestinywithTime.

Interclub Cruise 2018 This year the 70’s themed ICBC cruise started on Saturday 21st September in Manly Boat Harbour. Over 60 boats and 200+ people, including a strong contingent from the WMYC joined the cruise in its 43rd year. The sign-on, the dinner, and the welcome party was hosted by RQYS. It was a great start to the cruise with the amazing Italian buffet meal, opportunities to catch-up with friends and mingle and lots of fun was had during the 70s quiz. Day 2 we all sailed down to the Karragarra Yacht Club (KYC) on the beautiful Karragarra Island (of course). The afternoon started with a giant tug-a-war and kid’s activities on the foreshore, followed by a Virgin Cruisers Orientation. For dinner the KYC put on a great BBQ dinner of burgers, sausages and salad. A multitude of Elvis’s ‘entered the building’ to be judged on who had portrayed ‘The King’ at his best.

Karragarra Foreshore

The famous Canaipa Cup Horse Racing event was scheduled for the afternoon, but was postponed due to a windy track, forcing us all to check our anchoring prowess as a southerly change came through. ‘Far out Man’! The wind died off a bit as evening set, allowing the fleet to return ashore for a roast meat and apple crumble meal. Marshmallow roasting and a sing-a-long around the camp fire followed finishing off a top night.


Day 3 the fleet upped anchor early and steamed around to RQYS’s Canaipa facility on Russell Island. We all met ashore for a fully cooked brunch, followed by kid’s game marathon during the afternoon.

Sand tobogganing on the eastern side of South Stradbroke was planned for the afternoon but was cancelled as apparently you are not allowed to let your children be sandblasted. i.e. It was still a bit windy. Instead the postponed Canaipa Cup was held and a great time was had by all. Dinner was a Pot Luck affair ashore at Dux. Cruisers got to use their great culinary skills and brought meals ashore to share it with fellow cruisers. After dinner there was a movie with some munchies. ‘Right on man’!

South Stradbroke Island


Day 4 the fleet once again upped anchor early, this time steaming south the Southport Yacht Club’s (SYC) facility at ‘Dux’ on South Stradbroke Island. Lunch was had at Tipplers Island Resort.

Day 5 the fleet continued south to the SYC’s Main Beach clubhouse. During the afternoon, cruisers elected to have a surf, help the kids learn to sail on dinghy’s, or polish their boats for the ‘Pride of the Fleet’ that was judged during the afternoon.

Interclub Cruise 2018 For dinner we all headed upstairs in the SYC clubhouse for a fancy dinner with

a dress up Disco Night and a live DJ. We all got up and boogie the night away. Can you dig it? Day 6 had the fleet turning around and heading to Couran Cove on south Stradbroke Island. On the way north, we had our Sail Past near Runaway Bay. The Sail Past involves all boats dressed up with flags etc, lining up, and proceeding past the commodore boat for the salute. During the afternoon there were kids games organised by the resort giving the adults some time to chill out. As the sun went down, we all gathered for cocktails at the Sunset Beach bar. The evening included a BBQ Buffet by Couran Cove, and for the night’s entertainment we had a Treasure Chest draw, interspersed with a Nautical Quiz

Day 7 the fleet moved around the BOAT facility ‘Boathaven’ on South Stradbroke Island. The quieter day has had by all practicing for the Cruise Talent Quest in the evening. The evening commenced with a sausage sizzle followed by the Cruise Talent Quest revealing some remarkable talents, particularly from the Breakfast Creek Boat club. The WMYC sponsored some cheese and port during the quest.

Day 8 started with many long faces as the cruise was over for another year and the fleet went on their way to their home ports, though a few (like us on Exile) used the strong northerly as an excuse to hang around South Stradbroke for a few more days, until the next southerly change came through.
