Did You Know ...

... That Red Cross Services Are Free to Soldiers?

During World War II, the Secretary of War asked the American RedCross to charge soldiers for coffee, donuts, and other incidentals. The request was made because other agencies had to charge, andbecause giving such items free to U.S. soldiers would have dispiritedthe Allied troops. Things changed after WWII. And the Armed Forcescontinue to enjoy the many services of the Red Cross completely freeof charge.

... That the Red Cross Is Over 122 Years Old?Clara Barton founded the American Association of the Red Cross in

Washington, D.C., on May 21, 1881. Created to serve America in peaceand in war, Barton's organization took its service beyond that of theInternational Red Cross Movement by adding disaster relief to battle-field assistance. She served as the organization's volunteer presi-dent until 1904.

... That the Red Cross Logo Is Based on the Swiss Flag?

The International Red Cross was created in Switzerland in 1863.The Red Cross logo was adopted in that year as a symbol of neutrali-ty. It was chosen because it is a reverse of the colors of the Swissflag and because the red cross on a background of white was easilyrecognized and reproducible on battlefields.
