How Many Calories Do You Burn with one minute of sitting?

Sitting at work, commuting back and forth, or sitting at home…we’ve adopted a very sedentary lifestyle.

Not too many years ago, it was very popular to be concerned about calories. How many calories you’re eating

compared to how many you’re burning, for example.

For those calorie counters out there I’m going to reveal the amount of calories burned for each minute of sitting.

I bet you can guess that it isn’t that much and you would be right.

The answer is more than 1 calorie but less than 2 calories per minute for just sitting. Standing increases the calorie

burn by 50% and walking doubles it.

But the truth is that there is more to the calorie counting story.

“Calories in” doesn’t equal “calories out”. We have an X factor that hasn’t been included in this formula.

For example, if you eat 1500 calories one day, most assume that all 1500 calories made it into our bodies for proper

use.

What about the undigested portion that goes out the other end? What about the unknown amount that is digested by

our trillions of gut bacteria?

What about our metabolisms? Some of us use more energy at rest and with work. Others have slow metabolisms and

burn less calories.

Maybe this is why calorie counting popularity is down. In the long run, it as a diet thing to lose weight really didn't work

well.

For our purposes here, let’s stay focused on sitting at work and burning calories.

One way to increase your metabolism and increase the burn of calories is to move more. I suggest you take micro-

breaks at work or when you are sitting for long periods of time.

A micro-break is a 1 minute movement break for each ½ hour of sitting.

And by the way, studies have shown that prolonged sitting actually chemically “slows” your metabolism and in turn

slows your calorie burn.

Today’s micro-break is really a micro micro-break! It is even less than 1 minute (although you can do it longer if you

like). It’s called Bruegger’s Postural Relief exercise. Demo link here: www.bunchchiropractic.com/calories-burn-per-

minute/ .

This and many other micro-break exercises are a great way to inject some movement into a sedentary day. Also they

can help improve your metabolism and burn more calories too.

Although there is more to calorie counting than meets the eye, one thing’s for sure, if you move more, if you take micro-

breaks regularly, you will burn more calories and you will improve your metabolism and your posture and you will feel

better!

Please do contact us if you are having trouble with pain or tightness. We have a special ‘Be Fit While You Sit’ consult

and exam to see if we can help you.

Also, if you have a group that wants to have a Be Fit While You Sit Workshop for your employees or coworkers, then

contact us today at 714-751-8570.

Sincerely,

Carlos MoralesMonrovia Viejo Chapter

Where are you from originally and when did you move to So Cal?

I’ve lived in Southern California all my life.

What got you started on running, when, where, etc.?

I got started running last October and trained for the Los Angeles Turkey Trot 5K the following November.

What has been your favorite race and why?

It has to be SLO Ultra 50K on September 1st 2018. I finished dead last and less than a minute away from the cutoff time. I felt as though it was a culmination of all the things I’ve struggled with in my life. Although I suffered a lot, I loved every moment of it.

What is the coolest place you have gone for a run?

I’d have to say the Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park in Santa Clarita. It’s famous for a lot of old western movies, The Flintstones, and It's where Capt. James T. Kirk famously battled a seemingly indestructible green lizard called a Gorn in the episode titled "Arena." Needless to say I was geeking out as I took in all the amazing views. There was a particular moment I’m fond of - Watching the clouds part, as I was running down a hill at full speed, and the sun broke through. Definitely felt something expand in my chest.

What are you training for now and how is it going?

As of now I’m training for the Avalon 50k that takes place on January 20th 2019. I’ve never been to Catalina before and I think it would be an awesome start to the new year. The training is going well. There’s aches and pains going on but mentally, I’ve never beenstronger.

Do you have any races that interest you?

Three of the them actually. Western States, Hardrock, and Leadville 100. It won't be a matter of “if” but “when”. I’m excited for the future.

What are your current running goals?

Become a better trail runner. I’m a heavy guy at 270 lbs and running downhill tends to blow my quads out fairly quickly. I’ve been doing my best to seek out every resource to better my form, strength train, and get hills as much as I can.

What is your best running tip?

Develop your mental toughness. Try to do things, in your training, that gets you out of your comfort zone. Things that question your physical ability. The more you subject yourself to suffering the more you strengthen the mind. The legs will take care of the rest.

Why do you run?

It's the best therapy you can get and it doesn't break the bank. I’ve struggled with opiate addiction, alcohol abuse, self harm, and depression. I hit rock bottom for the last time and I decided to run away from my problems, literally. Haha, but actually the opposite happens. You spend a lot of time with yourself when you're out there training. Reflecting and meditating all while your body's in motion. You begin to run with your heart. It makes me feel alive and it's so inviting to the soul.

Any other hobbies or interests?

I write, play bass, and sing in a metal band that I formed with friends. I love to read and I love to lift weights. Oh, is eating a hobby?

What do you like most about being a member of A Snail’s Pace Running Club?

The staff at the Monrovia shop are one of the friendliest bunch you can meet. There’s always a fun event going on and the sense of community really is strong. We’re here to build each other up and support!

Faith and I took part in the 23rd Edition of the World Masters Athletics Track and Field Championships in Malaga, Spain along with 8,000+ athletes from 101 countries. The event ran from September 4th through 16th and covered the whole spectrum of track and field, half marathon, cross country and race walking. Sort of like Senior Olympics with all participants wearing their country’s team uniform.

Anyone 35 or older can participate in WMA Championships which are held every two years in a different host country. There’s no qualifying standards, you just have to be a member of your national running organization, for the U.S. it’s USATF. And since the U.S. wants all its participants wearing the same team uniform, USATF supplied Faith and I (and all the other Americans free of charge) a full set of USA gear worn by the 2016 Olympians in Rio – singlet, shorts, tech tee, half-zip long sleeve pullover, rain jacket and sweat pants.

I arrived in Malaga on the third day of competition for preliminary heats in the 800 and 1500 meters, and Faith followed a few days later for the half marathon. My USA uniform helped me run my fastest 800 for 2018, 2:42.63, but it wasn’t fast enough to advance to the finals. The 1500 didn’t go any better so I was able to focus on supporting Faith In her race.

Unlike most half marathons we are used to, this one didn’t start until 9:00am on a hot and humid day. Faith started out strong, but by mile four she knew she needed to back off if she was going to finish. By mile eight she was rationalizing that being scooped up by a Sag Wagon wouldn’t be the worse possible outcome. However, with a lot of walk breaks, she was able to finish in a respectable 2:36. Just like at the real Olympics, the race finished inside the stadium in front of a roaring crowd of spectators.

After the competition we headed up to Barcelona for the remainder of our trip where we took in the sights including the 1992 Olympic Stadium.

The next WMA Championships will be in Toronto, Canada in 2020 and we’re already planning for this“runcation”. We highly recommend this event to all our Snail’s Pace members.

Race for the Cure and Global Energy Run!!!!

Snails take the Train to Global Energy Race

Seven brave Snail runners from Fountain Valley and Mission Viejo made the trek i

nto Los Angeles to run the 2018 Global Energy Race. After meeting in the Fount

ain Valley store parking lot, we carpooled to the Wardlow Metro Station in Long B

each. From there it was an easy train ride into the Staples Center.

There were several other Snail runners in attendance from all the chapters and th

e running academy. The 10K runners began first, followed by the 5K. The cours

e was mostly straight and flat, down Figueroa and doing an about-face before Exp

osition Park. Overall, the course itself wasn’t that exciting. The real reason to do

the Global Energy Race (sponsored by the Bimbo bakery chain) is for the swag

. Each registered runner got a string bag, tech fabric shirt, hat, visor, arm sleeve,

finisher’s medal and a bag of bagels. If you like bread, this race is for you!
