Executive Council Meeting

Ways & Means Committee When: Wednesday, November 15 Time: 10:30 AM Where: Craft Room

Hello Fellow Members,

There is a de@inite change in our weather, a bit cooler with signs of winter’s approach. The colored leaves have disappeared and stark, empty limbs and branches paint a bleaker panoramic view around us as the trees prepare for their long winters slumber.

I would like to welcome all the new members that registered with our center and thank our existing members for re-registering. This month we are planning quite a few events here at the senior cen-ter, November 4th is our Bazaar and on the 13th is our Veteran’s Day Brunch, so please check out this newsletter or the front desk for de-tails. We are always looking for new volunteers to help out with our events and facility, so if your interested in helping stop at the front desk or talk to a council member. Here are a few Thanksgiving Fun Facts:

• The @irst Thanksgiving was held in the autumn of 1621 and includ-ed 50 Pilgrims and 90 Wampanoag Indians and lasted three days. Many historians believe that only @ive women were present at that @irst Thanksgiving, as many women settlers didn't survive that dif@i-cult @irst year in the U.S.

• Thanksgiving is the reason for TV dinners! In 1953, Swanson had so much extra turkey (260 tons) that a salesman told them they should package it onto aluminum trays with other sides like sweet po-tatoes — and the @irst TV dinner was born!

• The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade began in 1924 with 400 em-ployees marching from Convent Ave to 145th street in New York City. No large balloons were at this parade, as it featured only live animals from Central Park Zoo.

• Americans eat 46 million turkeys each Thanksgiving. Why is Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday in November? President Abe Lincoln said Thanksgiving would be the fourth Thursday in No-vember, but in 1939 President Roosevelt moved it up a week hoping it would help the shopping season during the Depression era. It never caught on and it was changed back two years later.

Have a Wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday, Peggy Warlick

Research with SHIP Key to Finding Best Part D PlanBaltimore County’s SHIP Volunteer Counselors will again be assisting Medicare Beneficiaries during

Open Enrollment from October 15 to December 7. The Medicare Part D Plans are allowed to change each year, therefore SHIP highly recommends that you go online to determine if your current plan is still the best for 2018. Call 410-887-2059 to make an appointment if you desire a Part D counselor to assist you with the research at an area senior center. At the same time the counselor will assess whether or not you are eligible for any of the programs to assist with the cost of your drugs and Medicare costs.

Adopt-A-Senior Help make the season a little brighter for some special seniors in the Parkville-Carney community

that are struggling and in dire financial need. These seniors and senior-led families have been identified as extremely low income by Baltimore County Department of Aging so you can be sure that your donation assists seniors in Baltimore County that really need our help! Beneficiaries identified for assistance include all situations from seniors living alone to seniors raising grandkids, thus we will have opportunities to support several children this holiday season as well. We are asking for donations of items both small and large for these special seniors and we need your help! Stop by the Parkville Senior Center at 8601 Harford Road, 21234, 410-887-5338 or email us at [email protected] for a copy of the “Wish Lists” of items that will help these seniors throughout the year.

Memory Screenings 2017Have you ever wondered if there was a way you could test your memory? Memory screenings, which

evaluate memory and other skills needed on a daily basis, are becoming more readily available to the public. While these screenings only take about 10 minutes and don’t give a diagnosis of memory deterioration, it lets people be proactive in contacting a doctor to have a check-up if the results aren’t where they want them to be. Appointments are strongly recommended by calling the following Baltimore County senior centers:

• Parkville Senior Center, 8601 Harford Road – 21234, 410-887-5338 on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.• Pikesville Senior Center, 1301 Reisterstown Road – 21208, 410-887-1245 on Monday, November 13, 2017 from 1 to 3 p.m.• Fleming Senior Center, 641 Main Street – 21222, 410-887-7225 on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Craig Alston Ensemble ConcertThe Craig Alston Ensemble, in partnership with Contemporary Arts, Inc., will perform the music

of Duke Ellington and other jazz masters as part of the Thanksgiving Luncheon at the Woodlawn Senior Center, 2120 Gwynn Oak Avenue – 21207, 410-887-6887. The event is on Friday, November 17, 2017 at noon, cost of the catered lunch is $10. To sign up, contact the senior center directly.

November Senior Center Closings

All Baltimore County senior centers and the BCDA Administrative offices will be closed on Friday, November 10 and Thursday, November 23.

Maryland Access Point ( MAP) of Baltimore County is part of a nationwide effort to streamline access to support, services and benefits to older adults, persons with disabilities, their families and care providers.

Center Connection links persons age 60 and over who need support to activities and services provided by the senior center. Center Connection Specialists, operating in eight Baltimore County Senior Centers, maximize individual’s senior center experience by encouraging participation in activities, registering for classes/Eating Together, and connecting them with other members.

This program connects Baltimore County residents age 60+ to community resources. Outreach workers evaluate seniors’ needs, assist with applying for benefits and services, and connect seniors to resources.

CountyRide provides paratransit transportation within the County for qualifying clients to appointments Monday through Friday. Reservations must be prescheduled and are scheduled on a first come, first serve basis. A book of 6 tickets costs $15. Payment by check or exact amount of cash (No change available in vehicles.)

The Eating Together program provides a nutritious meal and socialization in 35 County sites in senior centers, community buildings and senior residences. Residents aged 60 and over and their spouses of any age are eligible to participate in this program and are asked to make a voluntary, confidential donation.

This community-based volunteer program provides social support to County seniors 60+ who are isolated and confined to their home. Through friendly in-home and telephone visits, volunteers offer the needed interaction, socialization and reassurance to help seniors maintain a higher quality of life with the ability to remain independent in their home longer.

Trained volunteers answer questions regarding Medicare A and B, Medicare Advangtage Plans, Medicare Supplement Insurance (medigaps), Medicare Prescription Drug Plans (Part D), Medicaid and potential Medicare frauds. Also, callers are assessed for eligibility to obtain financial assistance to help with Medicare and prescription cost.
