INTRODUCING A SEASON OF VISTAS

Classical music is presented in a panorama

of options, all sure to delight both novice and

expert. Masterworks—the DPO’s flagship

series—brings dynamic soloists and major

classical compositions to the fore. Sensational

works for piano, violin, flute and bassoon are

performed by artists both long established and

on the ascent. Symphonies that have shaken

the world will also shake the Mead Theatre

stage. The Sundae Classics series

is a new evolution of Classical Connections.

There will be five performances that more

closely echo their Masterworks counterparts,

and Neal’s comments will be more concise with

fewer demonstrations. Included is one

concert in the Classical Connections style:

an in-depth look at the Beatles’ legendary

Sgt. Pepper’s album with guest rock group

Classical Mystery Tour. The Chamber series has

evolved into the Recital Series, including two

chamber concerts at the Dayton Art Institute,

the Opera vocalist recital and a Wildcard!

This season, the Family Series includes the

family favorite PhilharMonster plus matinee

performances of both The Nutcracker and

The Pirates of Penzance. SuperPops continues

to excel as a series of unparalleled popular

music experiences, and Rockin’ Orchestra

brings a powerful orchestral dimension to

rock ’n’ roll classics.

Beethoven’s Ninth: Season Opening Spectacular Signature Event

September 15 (8 pm) & 16 (3 pm), 2018Beethoven Egmont Overture | “Ah! perfido” | Christ on the Mount of Olives, Hallelujah Chorus | Symphony No. 9 Dayton Philharmonic | Dayton Opera | Dayton Ballet Thomas Bankston producing director | Karen Russo Burke choreographer | Neal Gittleman conductor

This is a shared event with Opera and Ballet Subscribers. Masterworks 9 Friday night subscribers are seated in Sunday’s matinee performance.

This is Beethoven’s Ninth as you’ve never experienced it! The timeless masterwork will be enhanced with live projected imagery of the orchestra, innovative dance, and of course, the combined choruses and the four soloists who join for the famed “Ode to Joy” finale. The program celebrates four forms of Beethoven’s genius: overture, song, choral work, and symphony.

Pictures at an ExhibitionSeptember 28 & 29, 2018Debussy-Molinari L’isle joyeuse | Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1 Mussorgsky-Ravel Pictures at an Exhibition Yevgeny Kutik violin | Neal Gittleman conductor

Rich with romance and orchestral color, this program illustrates the power of music to create elaborate visions in the mind and deep feelings in the heart. Two of the works started life as solo piano compositions and were subsequently given their opulent orchestral attire by a second composer. The same two works were inspired by visual art!

Star Power: Misha Plays LisztOctober 12 & 13, 2018Bernstein Dance Episodes from On the Town Liszt Piano Concerto No. 1 | Brahms Symphony No. 2 Misha Dichter piano | Neal Gittleman conductor

Dance music from the musical On The Town captures the spirit and romance of “…New York, New York, what a wonderful town!” Then we move to a work of pianistic lightning, performed by a seasoned master of his craft. Guest pianist Mischa Dichter brings his special brand of flamboyance to Liszt’s first piano concerto. Neal closes with Brahms’ second symphony. Full and rich, lyrical and sunny, it features a profusion of memorable melodies.

Griminelli: Flautista ItalianoJanuary 11 & 12, 2019Rossini La Gazza Ladra Overture | Mozart Flute Concerto No. 1 Bartók Concerto for Orchestra | Andrea Griminelli f lute Neal Gittleman conductor

Opera composer Rossini’s La Gazza Ladra tells a tale of the exploits of a mischievous magpie. The rollicking overture almost serves as a mini-opera in itself. Mozart’s famous Flute Concerto No. 1 shines brightly under the loving care of our guest soloist, the adroit and polished Andrea Griminelli. When our musicians love playing a work, you’ll love it too. Such is the case with Bartók’s brilliant and inventive Concerto for Orchestra.

A Brahms TreasuryMarch 22 & 23, 2019Traditional St. Anthony Chorale | Haydn Excerpts from The Seven Last Words of Christ | Brahms Song of Destiny and Liebeslieder Waltzes | Brahms Haydn Variations | Brahms Violin Concerto | Chad Hoopes violin | Neal Gittleman conductor Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra Chorus

Here are five works that are carefully chosen like a rare collection of precious gems, displaying facets of Brahms’ genius alongside colorations by classical master Joseph Haydn. You’ll find songs, a traditional choral work, orchestral works, and Brahms’ supreme romantic expression—the Violin Concerto in D major—performed by a new master of violin, the talented Chad Hoopes.

Sleeping Beauty: The Story of Briar Rose April 12 & 13, 2019 Tchaikovsky Sleeping Beauty | Neal Gittleman conductor Performed as a full ballet with the Dayton Ballet

Sleeping Beauty was first performed as a ballet in Russia in 1890 to music by the famed composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Now, Dayton Ballet presents Sleeping Beauty: The Story of Briar Rose with a few twists of our own. Our original presentation of the classic tale is draped in nature with settings of whimsical gardens and ominous forests, fairies that embody virtues of various flowers, and even the beautiful leading maiden: Briar Rose. Evil enters in the form of a vulturelike forest villain named Cinereous. One prick of the finger from a black rose turns sweet Briar Rose into the beloved Sleeping Beauty. Experience it with your family!

Mauceri Meets Daurov May 10 & 11, 2019Prokofiev Overture on Hebrew Themes | Bernstein Three Meditations from MASS | Bruch Kol nidrei Shostakovich Symphony No. 5 | Adrian Daurov cello John Mauceri guest conductor

Conductor John Mauceri and cellist Adrian Daurov make their Dayton debuts on this program of deeply reflective and profoundly moving music. These four works may be stylistically diverse, but together they express what it means to be human. Shostakovich’s historic Symphony No. 5 closes the evening with a veritable explosion of emotions.

Mozart and MahlerJune 7 & 8, 2019Mozart Bassoon Concerto | Mahler Symphony No. 1 Rachael Young bassoon | Neal Gittleman conductor

The combination of Mozart and Mahler is pure magic. We welcome DPO Principal Bassoon Rachael Young to center stage for Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto in B-flat major. The delightful work sets the tone for Mahler’s first foray into the symphonic world, and what a massively successful entrance it is! The work raised the bar forever for every composer who came after.
