Dear Readers,

LAMP Pakistan has started an effort to share its journey for Reaching the Unreached in this

News letter. This first edition will share the change LAMP is bringing in the lives of

underprivileged communities of sindh.

Read about our efforts in engaging government teachers and local communities in re

opening schools, construction of shelters for flood affected communities, empowering,

motivating and building capacities of the communities.

A Hope for School children

District Badin, Matli

January- April 2013

Developing a country demands to invest in

the Education sector which is much neglected

in rural areas of Pakistan. Particularly the

government schools have been given least

attention. Availability of teachers, poor

infrastructure and insufficient facilities are the greatest challenges in government schools.

LAMP Pakistan has been working in Matli since 2010 .Through Child focused community

development six government schools have been

reopened. To provide an opportunity to maximum

students rooms and toilets have also been

constructed by LAMP. School Management

committees have been formed which meets every

month to discuss School's progress, challenges

and solution along with LAMP team. Parents

gathering also take place once a month.

These meetings are aim to ensure maximum

participation of parents and communities in

renovation/construction at schools, Mobilize

parents to pay attention to Children's education

needs

Two seminars have been organized in villages

Allan khan Nizamani and Hameer Talpur. Two fifty

five participants took part in these seminars. The

Seminars aims to raise awareness about

importance of education among communities.

Assistant District Officer Elementary Matli was

invited in the seminars. He motivated the

communities to enroll their children at school.

Awareness sessions on importance of personal

cleanliness and the proper dispose off the garbage to prevent disease have also been

organized.

Sports day has been organized for students and they participated in full spirits. On 23rd

March, National day has been celebrated in schools where students performed national

songs and sung national anthem.

One fifty six students have appeared in examination .In April 2013, Annual result day has

been celebrated in the school, and gifts have been distributed among students while

teachers have been given appreciation certificates.

50 corn corpus plants have been planted in all schools to instill the practice of tree

plantation among students.

To address the problem of unavailability of the water storage in schools, two Nadi filters

have been placed at each school. Session Judge of Badin court also visited the school and

appreciated LAMP's efforts.

Enrollment campaign has been launched by school students in villages, they moved in

villages with banners and play cards in hands.

Asghar one of the student says'' my parents were not interested to send me to school

initially but when they started sending me school .I really liked the class environment. ''

Asher's father Abdullah says '' Asghar is performing well in school and I am very hopeful for

my son's future''.

A Government teacher Siddique Nizamani says '' these schools have been given a new life,

students started coming and enjoying in the classroom. I am very proud to be part of this

change along with LAMP''.

LAMP Pakistan also raises awareness on Cross cutting issues like childhood marriages, child

rights and child labor.

Sanghar families found Shelter for safety and

security

January- April 2013

� Flood 2011 has done an immense damage to the properties of people. Houses that

have been constructed by poor agrarian families after many years of saving were

badly affected and no longer remain in a condition to live in. LAMP Pakistan has

contributed towards rehabilitation and restoration of these communities. One

thousand families in five union councils Khadwari, Mian, Shah Mardanabad, 2 city

and PSSSS have been identified.

From the project inception project plan including LAMP's contribution, contribution of

Beneficiaries, provision of construction material and technical guidance from plinth to roof

installation has been shared. Fifty five village committees have been formed .Village

committees play an important role in handling any issue raise in the community and

motivate families along with LAMP team to

participate actively in the project.

LAMP Pakistan through its community Restoration

and Rehabilitation project assisting beneficiaries with

1300 bricks , 10 Sacks of Cement (for pillars

Construction), 14 Bamboos, 3 Iron Guarders, 2 Palm

Leave Mats, 1 plastic sheet, 5 Ropes (for Roofing),

Mason’s Labor Cost. Similarly communities are

contributing in Plot Clearance, Plot level raising,

Plinth hole Digging, Provision of Sand, and Labor

work with mason for pillar construction.

In February 2013, construction work has been

started. 40 local Mason’s are engaged for

construction process, it is intended to empower them

and provide an opportunity to enhance their skills

with technical guidance.

In April 2013, Nine Hundred shelters were completed to pillars. While Walls of one hundred

and eighty two shelters have been completed. Sixty Nine families received roof material of

the shelter. Most of the project's beneficiaries are small farmers, tenants or share croppers.

practices so that shelter could

withstand the affects of flood and

rains.

Seventy four Health and hygiene

sessions are conducted in villages.

Majority of the families practice

open defecation, families are

motivated to make a place for the

toilet and a toilet slab will be

provided to them. In April 2013,

thirty families have prepared a

place for toilet. Kitchen Gardening has been promoted to the communities and two

hundred and twenty families have been provided with the seed kit.

In April 2013, a temporary house of families of village fahim ijaz has been burnt to ashes

while a lady was cooking on a stove and by accident it caught fire and spread all over. Non

food items including Kitchen set, blankets, plastic sheets and hygiene kits have been

provided to the affected families.

Assisting in One room shelter

January – April 2013

Rain flood 2011, affected many families of district mirpurkhas; it damaged their houses

and property. One thousand most vulnerable families have been identified for the provision

of one room shelter. Forty six focal persons have been identified in forty six villages.

Till the end of April 2013, two hundred and sixty eight Technical training sessions have been

conducted for four thousand six hundred and sixty six participants. Participants have been

told in local language how to construct a shelter using disaster risk reduction techniques.

Methods to construct rain and flood resistant shelter have been told to participants. During

the sessions participants

shared their bitter experiences

of 2011 flood. The common

point which all the participants

shared was the foundation of

the house was not given much

attention, No plan was followed

to fight flood risk .This resulted

in maximum damage to their

houses. All women, men and

children participated

enthusiastically.

Some men stop smoking to

save money to complete their

shelters well in time.

Beneficiaries are being given

the amount for construction in

installments.

Go Green…. Food Security and Environment

Conservation

January – April 2013

In District Tando Allahyar, Union Council Bukera

Sharif, twenty two Villages were selected to

distribute five thousand fruit sapling to four

hundred and eighty four beneficiaries. The

initiative intends to have a positive impact on

Environment through plantation, ensuring access

availability and utilization of fresh fruits to

beneficiaries, economical empowerment of

beneficiaries when surplus amount of fruits sold

out in the local market and mitigation of

damages of flood through tree plantation.

Twelve trainings on tree plantation have been conducted in which five hundred and

fourteen females and two hundred and twenty seven males participated. The Agriculture

tool kit (Hand Sprinkler, Sickle, Khairo, Budding, knife, secateurs) was distributed to four

hundred and eighty four beneficiaries. In eight villages Sobdar Khan Mari, Ismail Burfat, Dost

Ali Khokhar, D – Class Village, Jumma Khan Mari, Haji Alam Khokhar, Haji Karim Dad Wasan,

Marwari Community small gardens have been made by the beneficiaries. Six hand pumps

have also been installed in these villages and people are using the water for irrigation,

household consumption and for drinking.

Capacity Building: Investing in staff

LAMP Pakistan provides an opportunity to

staff to learn and grow with the

organization. In the month of February

2013, staff members attended the training

on Result based project Management in

Karachi. In March 2013 an external trainer

conducted training for staff on '' First Aid''.

In the month of April two Staff members

participated in ''Community development''.

conducted by IOM on '' Shelter

construction with Disaster Risk Reduction

techniques''

In house sessions have also been held in all field offices. In the month of April 2013 a session

on '' class room teaching techniques '' has been conducted for staff based in Matli office. A

session on '' Participatory Rural Appraisal '' has been conducted in LAMP's Sanghar office.

Every month in house sessions on different topics are organized for staff. A resource center

for staff is also in process where different books and learning materials will be available for

staff.
