Killarney Lake used to have a reputation as a ‘resort’ with a hotel on the site. Nestled in the trees beside the lake is the Killarney Lake Rotary Centennial Lodge, which includes three meeting rooms, fireplace, kitchenettes—a great spot to gather for that important meeting or to socialize with participants of a pond hockey tournament. A sandy swimming area, a lodge to meet all needs, sweet smelling pine needles, trails for exercising the kid in you, a place for a romantic skate, a lake with an unusual history — what more could you ask? Situated about 4.8 km from downtown Fredericton, Killarney Lake and Park is an area designated by the city as permanent parkland in order to protect this natural wonder for future generations. Its size continues to grow as surrounding land is donated and/or purchased. With a 1.6 km walking trail around the lake alone and many more km of trails accessible for different types of biking and hiking, Killarney Lake is set in a region of mixed Acadian forest with birch, maple, and poplar being the dominant trees. The pine- needled path around the lake itself sits on top of a narrow ridge, called an “esker.” An esker is a geological formation uncommon in this area, which would have been deposited here during the Wisconsinan Late-glacial period by streams carrying sand and gravel under the ice sheet. Historically it used to be the source of water for the Town of Devon in the 1920s. However, its most popular claim to fame is that in 1885 it was home to the Coleman Frog. A family pet owned by Fred B. Coleman, owner of the hotel, was fed june bugs, whiskey, and buttermilk until it grew to a reported 19 kg (42 lb). Today the stuffed frog can be viewed at the York-Sunbury Museum.

Killarney Lake used to have a reputation as a ‘resort’ with a hotel

on the site. Nestled in the trees beside the lake is the

Killarney Lake Rotary Centennial Lodge, which includes three

meeting rooms, fireplace, kitchenettes—a great spot to gather

for that important meeting or to socialize with participants of a

pond hockey tournament.

A sandy swimming area, a lodge to meet

all needs, sweet smelling pine needles,

trails for exercising the kid in you, a

place for a romantic skate, a lake with an

unusual history — what more could you

ask?

Situated about 4.8 km from downtown

Fredericton, Killarney Lake and Park is an

area designated by the city as permanent

parkland in order to protect this natural

wonder for future generations. Its size

continues to grow as surrounding land is

donated and/or purchased.

With a 1.6 km walking trail around the lake alone and many more

km of trails accessible for different types of biking and hiking,

Killarney Lake is set in a region of mixed Acadian forest with

birch, maple, and poplar being the dominant trees. The pine-

needled path around the lake itself sits on top of a narrow

ridge, called an “esker.” An esker is a geological formation

uncommon in this area, which would have been deposited here

during the Wisconsinan Late-glacial period by streams carrying

sand and gravel under the ice sheet.

Historically it used to be the source of water

for the Town of Devon in the 1920s. However,

its most popular claim to fame is that in 1885 it

was home to the Coleman Frog. A family pet

owned by Fred B. Coleman, owner of the hotel,

was fed june bugs, whiskey, and buttermilk until

it grew to a reported 19 kg (42 lb). Today the

stuffed frog can be viewed at the York-Sunbury

Museum.
