ART E-NEWS News from the Normandale Art Department Spring 2013 Normandale Student Show On April 8th, Rachel Flentje, Director of Visual Arts at the Bloomington Theatre and Art Center, awarded Normandale students with a variety of awards. She stated: If I were to find one word to describe this exhibition I would say it is “Risk”. I saw over and over artists taking risks and that was very exciting to see. Although most if not all of the pieces are from classroom assignments it was won- derful to see artists pushing themselves and their art beyond what was expected. It’s clear that you are all excellent observers of the world around you and you’re not afraid to find new and challenging ways to convey your observa- tions through art. Amy Lund has been accepted to Oregon College of Art and Craft (NASAD accredited). Five days after her acceptance she received a phone call and was informed that she was the recipient of the President’s Scholarship, an award totaling $40,000.00 ($10,000.00 maximum applied to each of 4 years of tuition).

The Art faculty reviewed the applications for the two art scholarships and selected Julie Ann James for the Bryant Family Scholarship and Sayomi Murphy for the Felicity Abby Jane Mathieu Scholarship. Both scholarships are for $750 for use during the 2013-14 academic year.

Christina White is a first year teacher at Chaska High School. This year she attended the Art Department’s Annual High School Art Day held in February. Chris-tina has passion for art that was fostered by her teachers when she was a student at Chaska H.S. This year she re-turned to Chaska as an art teacher. She was enthusiastic about attending the Art Day because she remembered the first time she attended it as a student. Christina was a part of the first High School Art Day held in February 2007. She even recalled the workshops she attended: Hand-Painted Photographs and Paper Collage.

Cheryl Wilke painted the cover for her new book in Painting 1. Her book: “The Writer’s Hour” offers many new poems and several older favorites including the book’s namesake poem: “The Writer’s Hour.” In 2011, it earned first place in the annual contest sponsored by the League of Minnesota Poets. Cheryl has been taking many classes at Normandale and is interested in illus-trating her own books.

Chuck Burton, a local Glass Artist presented a Flame-work Beadmaking Workshop for Fused Glass 2 stu-dents in April. Chuck demonstrated the technique and then the students made their own beads. Chuck has been working in glass for fifteen years. He also was a student in Fused Glass 1 and Fused Glass 2.

Two Glass Tile artworks were presented by Fused Glass 2 students to Colleen Simpson, Executive Direc-tor of the Normandale Foundation on April 26th.One tile work will be on display in the Foundation Of-fice and the second will be auctioned at the Foundation Gala on November 1st. (see image below)

AFA Student ShowAFA Students will be showing their work in the Normandale Art Gallery from May 6th to May 17th.

I have enjoyed photography since my very first dark room course my freshman year of high school. With the classes I have taken at Normandale and experimenting on my own I have developed a series of work which focuses on irrational fears. In most of my photographs there is no clear threat, turning the decision onto the viewer whether or not the situation is truly threatening. Most of the situations I depict are either based off of stories in the news or common horror movie situations. My favorite medium is photogra-phy because a camera captures reality down to every detail. I am able to exaggerate light when there is very little in a way which al-lows me to set different moods for a setting. My future plans are to transfer into a bach-elorette program then pursue graduate school.

I pursued an Associates of Fine Art because it would allow me to work towards receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. My work is influenced by dreams, imagi-nation, cartoons and video games, as well as pivotal art movements throughout history. My favorite mediums to work with are colored pencil, chalk pastels, and scrap collage. My future plans consist of transferring to the Minneapolis College of Art and Design this fall to finish a B.F.A. with tentative plans to then study abroad and finally receive a Master of Fine Arts degree.

I’ve always been interested in creating art. The AFA degree program has been a way to hone my drawing and design skills as well as expose me to many things I couldn’t have easily tried on my own, like ceramics and screen printing. Clean lines and attention to craftsmanship are hallmarks of my work. My future plans include building a design portfolio worthy of a tattoo apprenticeship and possibly entering a BFA program.

Instructables.com is a neat website where people can submit instructions on how to make things from ordinary stuff that you may have laying around. Instructions on how to make a reflecting claude glass or black mirror are here:

http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-your-own-Claude-Glass-or-Black-Mirror/

By taking a clear lens from a projector, enlarger ect & painting the back black, it will reflect the surrounding scene, you can then paint or photograph it.

According to Wikipedia:A Claude glass (or black mirror) is a small mirror, slightly convex in shape, with its surface tinted a dark colour. Bound up like a pocket-book or in a carrying case, black mirrors were used by artists, travellers and connois-seurs of landscape and landscape painting. Black Mirrors have the effect of abstracting the subject reflected in it from its surroundings, reducing and simplifying the colour and tonal range of scenes and scenery to give them a painterly quality.

Here is a photo using my Claude glass made form an enlarger lens, try it & have fun!
