Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time August 28, 2016

JMJ 28 August, 2016 My Dearest Parish Family, God be with us always.

The Gospel this Sunday gives a clear lesson on (in) Humility. Our Lord Jesus challenges us to reflect on the situation he describes and see how it can be applied into the different life experiences we have as His disciples. One of the areas where we can practice humility is the recognition of the constant need; of our dependence on God who is the source of our growth in our discipleship and stewardship. This is the reason we have scheduled “Light the Fire of Evangelization Parish Retreat” especially for those involve in ministries. It will take place on September 10 from 8:30 to 2:00 pm. This is a wonderful opportunity for those who are engaged in their faith, as well as those who wish to start, renew, and strengthen their resolve to serve. There are other opportunities for pastoral and spiritual formation that will be announced, so please be on the look out for them in the video announcements before Mass and here in the bulletin. As stewards of this wonderful parish we are also asked to be diligent in making sure the gifts we are entrusted with are treasured and valued. One of the projects we shall be engaging in, in the Spirit of Stewardship, is the construction of the revised patio. Once we receive the approval of our plans from the city, we will submit them to the Diocese for a final evaluation and permission for the implementation. Other projects that are within our capacity to implement have been accomplished, that is why we see some of the physical changes around our parish campus. We are all in this together, I read once on an advertisement: “where people come together there is great

power.” Our Lord Jesus intentionally gathered a community of disciples to which you and I belong. Our coming together is a recognition that our unique gifts serve to complement each other’s so that the work of evangelization can be done. In Matthew’s Gospel Jesus told us: “whenever two or three gathered in my Name, I am in their midst.” Let us engage in these faith gatherings with humble hearts truly open to the gifts of graces and empowerment bestowed. In this spirit we practice that dependence on our Loving Father who calls not just the qualified, but “qualifies” those who He calls. God bless and take care. Love and prayers,

Fr.

Amor y oraciones,

Padre Thomas Paul K. Naval

Our RE Department is in the process of registering approximately 200 children from 1st Grade through 8th Grade this coming fall, in order to teach students how to better know, love and serve God in our world today! God is great for sending so many students our way. Please

continue to pray that enough catechists and classroom aides will come forward to make this an amazing year for our students. (And here is God’s special secret, which I discovered upon teaching my very first 5th grade RE class: even adult catechists and aides can learn more about God’s magnificence by teaching or aiding in a classroom!) Calendars and start-up dates will be emailed to all who have registered. Classes begin in early October. For more information, contact Gloria Fetta at 949-951-8599 ext. 230.

RCIA/RICA Registration As the Church liturgical year trends to study and reflection, we, the Santiago faith community, once again prepare for those who seek knowledge and information about our Catholic Christian tradition.

The process of welcome and education in the Catholic Christian tradition is called the Order of the Catechumenate. The Order of the Catechumenate dates to the days immediately after the death of Christ. It’s a process whereby unbaptized and those baptized in another Christian tradition come to know, understand and embrace the Catholic faith. Many know and recognize this process as the RCIA program (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults). Are you aware we also have an adapted RCIA program for children grades 1 through 12? We offer the adult process in either English or Spanish and the Children’s process is bi-lingual.

Registration forms for Adults and Children are available in the Parish Office or through the parish

website: www.sdccatholic.org. Call the Office of Catechumenate for additional information at 949-951-8599 ext. 231

Bible Study is Coming Good News!

Are you ready for some powerful story telling? Then you are welcome

to Adult Bible Study to learn more deeply the relationship between God and the Women of the Old Testament. Welcome to their world and their understanding of what it means to be created in the image of God. And, more importantly how we relate to their stories and our own Covenant relationship with the Lord. Mark your calendar!

Time: 9am to 11am and/or 7pm to 9pm For further information, please call Nancy at

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time August 28, 2016

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time “Alms atone for sins” (Sirach 2:29). Alms are mercy translated into hands-on compassion. Jesus confirms Si-rach’s wisdom, “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy” (Matthew 5:7). “Conduct your affairs with humility” (Sirach 3:17). Humility: we’re all alike and spe-cial, for we’re children of God. Jesus confirms that wis-dom, too: “Do not recline at table in the place of honor. Take the lowest place” (Luke 14:8, 10). In fact, “When you hold a lunch or a dinner, do not invite friends, relatives, wealthy neighbors. Invite the poor, crippled, lame, blind,” physically or figuratively, society’s most vulnerable and marginalized, “who cannot repay you” (see 14:12–14). Je-sus seems to be telling us to prepare for eternity with God’s chosen by becoming their friend here and now. Mercy is measured not by our delight in welcoming those we like most or who can repay us best, but by sincerely embracing those we like least, who cannot repay us at all. Utter humility inspires pure mercy; pure mercy leads to eternal joy.—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Third and Final Trip to the Holy Door Saturday, October 1st at 1pm

Anyone interested in traveling to the Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano to experience the Holy Door? A group of your fellow parishioners are gathering in the back parking lot at 1pm for a blessing, form carpools, drive to Mission San Juan, and regroup in the parking lot at the Mission. Once we have regrouped, we will

experience “passing from darkness into light” by walking through the Holy Door. Those in “condition” to

gain the Indulgence will, as they prayerfully pass through the door.

When all have passed through the door, we will regroup and begin an eleven station prayer journey, developed for the Year of Mercy. Our total time from Santiago to San Juan and back to Santiago will not be

more than two hours. Conditions for the Indulgence: • A Catholic in good standing • Be in the state of grace • Have the interior detachment from sin, even venial

sin • Have sacramentally confessed your sins • Received the Holy Eucharist • Pray for the intentions of the Pope • The Indulgence can only be obtained once a day.

However, it can be applied to another person (living or deceased).

• Reconciliation and the Eucharist can be celebrated 20 days prior to the Indulgence.

Call Tom Haas at 949-951-8599 ext. 231.
