Introduction:

Antaragange (also known as Antaragange) is a mountain situated in

the Shathashrunga mountain range in the southeastern portion of

the Indian state of Karnataka, Kolar district. Antaragange literally means "Ganges from deep"

in Kannada. It is about two miles from the town of Kolar and seventy kilometers

from Bangalore. Antaragange is famous for Sri Kashi Vishweshwara temple, also known as

Kashi of South. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. In the temple is a pond which gets a

continuous flow of underground water from the mouth of a Basava (stone bull). It is believed

that drinking water from the pond cleanse one from many diseases.

Antaragange is a mountain located in the Shathashrunga mountain range. It is

located three kilometers from Kolar in the direction of Kolar Betta, the series of mountains that

form the temple backdrop. This is a sacred spot consecrated with a temple and tank which

receives water from a spring.

The word ‘Antaragange’ means ‘Ganges from deep’ in Kannada. The Kasi

Vishweshwara temple is the main attraction of this place. This place is also referred to as

Dakshina Kashi or Kashi of the South. The mountain contains a number of volcanic rocks of

various sizes and naturally carved caves around it. A clear view of entire town of Kolar can be

seen from the top of this mountain.

Antaragange, Kolar – A Tale Told by Caves, Temples and Rocks

Antaragange is a hill range that is blessed with unique natural beauty. The rocky hill

range is situated at a height of about 1226 metres from sea level in the Kolar district of

Karnataka, approximately 70 km from Bangalore.

The main attractions of Antaragange are numerous volcanic rock formations and a series

of natural caves formed from small volcanic rocks. The name Antaragange also refers to a

perennial spring that is found near the Kashi Vishweshwara temple on the hilly range. The hilly

range is a haven for trekkers and adventure seekers.

The beauty of Antaragange:

Antaragange is a unique hill that is covered by a blanket of dense forest at the base.

However, as one moves up the rocky hill the greenery thins out and is finally replaced by some

thorny bushes that adorn the top of the hill.

Page 7: A REPORT ON VISIT TO KOCHMUL 2019-2020

Field Visit Report-2019

Dr. AKQ-GCW-Kolar Page 4

The mystic caves:

The caves of the hill are a major draw for the travellers. These caves are a result of

natural accumulation of big and small rocks over a long period of time to form cave like

structures. The caves are of various sizes. Some of the caves are so small and narrow that it is

impossible to pass through them. Some of the caves can only be explored by crawling through

them, as they do not have the space to allow travellers to stand and explore them.

Charms of temples and springs:

Another major attraction of Antaragange is the presence of a few old temples. The hill

also has a few natural springs. Among the springs the most famous one is found inside the Kashi

Vishweshwara Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is also known as the Antaragange

Temple due to the presence of the spring. The specialty of the spring is that it emerges from a

small crevice in the rock and flows throughout the year.

The spring is a steady stream of water, the source of which is unknown to everyone. The

stream of water flows into a pond situated nearby. The water of this Antaragange spring is

considered to be sacred by the local people and tourists with a spiritual bend of mind. It is

believed that the water flowing out of the spring has its origin in the holy river Ganga that flows

through the eastern part of the country. It is remarkable to note that Antaragange means Inner

Stream or Ganges from deep.

Antaragange is a destination that never ceases to attract visitors. The pleasant weather of

the area adds to the lure of the place.

Explore the beauty of nature at Antaragange:

To add to the adventure the place is scattered with the natural caves. Exploring the caves

and rock formations can be a memorable experience. The ancient caves are inviting and

intimidating at the same time. Some caves are set deep beneath the rocks. Such caves are cool

but musty. Some caves are so narrow that it is impossible to explore them by any means. Some

others are large enough to allow adventure seekers to make comfortable entry into them.

VISIT TO BONSAI CULTIVATION CENTRE at jayanagar-kolar

INTRODUCTION TO BONSAI PLANTS:

Originally a practice of containering ancient wild trees in china bonsai wasreported to japan around 500 years ago where it was become an art form.

The word bonsai comes from chines word‘’pun sai” meaning quite literally‘’TREE IN POT’’.

From the department of botany we organized one day visit to bonsai cultivationcenter at Jayanagar-kolar on 3rd September 2019 with 30 IIIB.Sc.Students.

V.S. shastry sir explained and trained our students about cultivation of bonsaitrees from normal plant cuttings.

Students learnt about cultivation of bonsai trees using members of Moraceae,Euphorbiaceae, Rutaceae ,Apocynaceae and meliaceae.

Mr. v.s. shastry explained and demonstrated the techniques such as pinching ofbuds , pruning and wiring , grafting and cutting of branches ,types of fertilizersand carefully restricting but not abandoning fertilizers are used to be limited andredirected healthy growth.

Page 45: A REPORT ON VISIT TO KOCHMUL 2019-2020

IMPORTANCE OF BONSAI TREES:

The tree can be vine, a shrub or a tree. A common misconception for beginners isthat the plant used forbonsai are dwarf plants or even special bonsai plants.when first starting out styling and pruning your first tree you will discover theremany aesthetic rules in bonsai. However these should only be regarded asguidelines and you should try to create a tree that inspires you retaining thefeeling that it could actually exists on the side of a mountain or deep in a valley.

1. Bonsai plants are known to be great stress reliever2. These plants are best for decoration at home ,offices, gardens3. They are commercially cultivated because they are very expensive4. Purify air around us and create positive environment.

Page 46: A REPORT ON VISIT TO KOCHMUL 2019-2020

We are sincerely thanks to MR. V.S. SHASTRY for their valuable guidance on bonsaicultivationwhich was held on 3rd September 2019 and encouragement to our IIIB.Sc. students

Behalf of all students and staff of Botany department we hearty thanks to ourprincipal sir and sincere thanks to project co-coordinator prof. Padma madamhead of the botany department.
