Butwal Technical Institute (BTI) was established as a project under an agreement between Government

of Nepal and the United Nations Mission to Nepal (UMN) on 21st Kartik 2020 B.S. (7th November 1963

A.D.). since 18th Poush 2067 (2nd January 2011) this institute is operating as a “Company not Distributing

Profit” under company Act 2063. It alliance with the industries of Nepal to provide apprenticeship

training in Mechanical, Electrical, Welding and carpentry. It provides short term and long-term training

programs starting from 3 months to 4 years course in the above faculty. It has many disciplines to offer

to meet the needs of user agencies. Its intake capacity is 430 students including both short and long-

term courses. It has very good recognition in the job market.

The managing board consists of seven members out of which four are from public sector and three from

the private sectors.

In our visit to the BTI we came across different aspect of practical education. We had an excellent

opportunity to learn something about different kinds of mechanical, electrical equipment and tools.

We also came across different new equipment like MIG and TIG welders, their scope, mechanism and

working. We also visited different faculty of BTI with their lab installments like Mechanical, Electrical and

Welding. BTI has some most advanced equipment in Nepal. We came to know that BTI as an institute

has a great practical exposure to the students. As said by the chief executive officer 80% of the BTI

format of education involves practical and 20% involves theory.

Students at BTI spend most of their time in fields and industries which was very impressive and

appreciable. We spent a very knowledgeable time in BTI.

NHE does different works in mechanical and electrical equipment manufacturing involved in hydro and

electric power generation, transmission, distribution, heavy steel structure, project management and

related activities in the hydropower industry. It is a public limited company established in 1985 A.D.

Their capabilities include design, manufacturing and installation of hydropower equipment, mainly

covering various types of hydraulic gates, stoplogs, trash racks, penstock pipes, medium sized turbine

housings/casings, micro/mini turbines and substations. It aims to satisfy customer needs in the

manufacture, erection, testing commissioning and through life support of equipment in the

hydroelectric power Generation, transmission and distribution industry, by building up their own

capabilities and by maximizing the use of local.

In our visit to NHE we mainly dealt with our subject matter for this semester of Power Plant Equipment

which included turbines, gates, transformers, power house equipment and generators.

Luckily, we had all the opportunity to see all of those in single place in a very short time thanks to our

department for such a lovely arrangement.

In NHE they do all kinds of manufacturing, maintenance and repairing of the following things:

Electrical Equipment: Winding machines, Drying oven, Vacuum oil filling chamber, Oil treatment plant

(High Vacuum filter), Overhead crane (EOT), induced potential test set, Separate source voltage

withstand Mobile fork lift.

Hydro-mechanical equipment is one of their major Products & services in the Hydropower industry.

They have done many works for different national and international hydropower industry.

1. Middle Marsyangdi: Fabrication, erection, testing and commissioning of Manifold, Penstock

Pipes of 5.5m dia & 450m long - total 1,200 tons.

2. Kali Gandaki ‘A ‘: Assembling of 3 nos. 56.5 MVA Generators including erection of all Electrical

equipment in the Powerhouse

testing and commissioning of complete Powerhouse Electro-mechanical equipment and 70

MVA, 10.5/132 kV Switchyard in Consortium with GE Energy

5. Chilime: Complete Hydro-mechanical & Electro-mechanical Equipment Works

6. CHHUKA HYDROPOWER STATION 4 X 84 MW BHUTAN: The Contract signing of third runner

"Reclamation of the 84 MW Vertical Pelton Turbine Runner"

Besides there are many other works done by NHE. It mainly gets job references from Nepal Electricity

Authority, Butwal Power Company Ltd., Himal Power Ltd., Bhote Koshi Power Co. Ltd., National Hydro

Power Co. Ltd., Chilime Hydro Power Co. Ltd., Druk Green Power Corporation Ltd., Bhutan

Altogether the visit to the NHE was very fruitful to us.
