Let MAcnician Attack Your sick Mac!If you’re having problems with your Mac, iPad, or iPhone, head over to MACnician, located at 651 Roger Williams Avenue, and get fast help from Brian Sugarman, a seasoned certified Mac technician who formerly worked as an Apple Store “Genius.” MACnician offers repair, upgrades, data recovery, and at-home consulting for everything Apple.

Why go all the way to the Apple Store at the mall for service or support on Apple products when MACnician is local, affordable, and reliable? In fact, staff at the Apple Store has been known to send people with malfunctioning computers to Sugarman, whose years working as an Apple employee earned him a reputation for excellence in customer service and technical support. A Highland Park High School alum, Sugarman loves serving the community in which he grew up. In addition to

fixing Apple devices, he and his staff offer personal computer training, either in the store or in the comfort of your own home.

MACnician is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturdays 10-4 p.m., and Thursday by appointment only. Stop by while you’re picking up dinner next door at Piero’s Pizza! Or give Sugarman a call at 224-770-0070, check out his repair shop online at www.macnician.com, or email him at [email protected].

There’s Fun to “spare” at The AlleyThose of us who remember bowling in Highwood at Mary Jane Lanes (where Mr. Passini, the owner, would heat up pre-packaged ham and cheese sandwiches in an ancient, pre-microwave sandwich-warmer) are truly amazed when we walk

into its current incarnation, The Alley Highwood. From hosting highly competitive adult leagues to serving up certified Angus beef “Alley Burgers,” the place has really changed!

Since being taken over by Arnie and Steve Goldstein, this North Shore staple since 1949 now features automatic scoring, giant projection TVs, a full menu and bar (with a kitchen that stays open late!), billiards, a state of the art sound system for “Rock and Bowl” nights, and such regular events as “Beer Pong Tuesdays.” The Alley is the perfect venue for birthdays, bar mitzvahs, or even old fashioned bowling banquets. Add some of the Chicago area’s most popular bands, and you get a lively event destination for any occasion.

The Alley is definitely not your Dad’s bowling alley any longer. Stop by 210 Green Bay Road and roll a few frames. For more information, visit The Alley’s website www.bowlhighwood.com or Facebook page, or call 847-433-0304.

scott Weinstein Law Offices “What are you waiting for? Estate and business planning are a small price to pay for the long-term financial wellness of a

family, especially one with a family business,” says Scott Weinstein, Esq. a business and estate-planning attorney with the firm of Bischoff Partners LLC. “Without proper planning, business-owners

risk the financial well-being of everything they have worked for, often leaving their family to face the needless stress and costs associated with poor planning, or no planning for the future,” he continues. “I have seen families break apart just because the previous generation decided that the upfront cost of executing an estate and business-succession plan was too time-consuming and expensive”

“Creating a business succession plan along with a personal estate plan helps safeguard business and personal assets”, Weinstein adds. “It also helps a person breath easier when considering life’s uncertainties.” Weinstein believes that a business and estate attorney, working with a client’s other financial advisers, will use gifting techniques, buy-sell agreements, life and disability insurance and general trust planning, to establish a solid foundation to maximize the protection and value of business and personal assets, and almost certainly save the client thousands of dollars in probate and related professional fees. “There is no better peace of mind than to know that you are taking care of your loved ones with proper planning,” Weinstein insists.

In addition to being an estate planning professional, Weinstein also serves as Vice President and Counsel to the Highland Park Chamber Board of Directors. He can be reached by phone at 847-404-8733, or by email at [email protected].

Go for the Gold at Bullion expressYou don’t have to be in the Olympics to bring home the gold; all you have to do is stop in Bullion Express in the old Gsell’s Pharmacy location.

Bullion Express is the area’s first precious metals boutique. “With consumer demand for gold and silver at an all-time high, Bullion Express was created to fill a void in the precious metals industry. Beginning with a vision for a consumer-

friendly storefront with pricing that can only be found on the internet, we hope to put an entirely new face on what the world of gold and silver has to offer,” claims Patrick Mason, manager of the Highland Park store.

No longer will North Shore residents have to drive to the city to conduct business in precious metals, jewelry, watches, or rare coins. Offering pressure-free expertise in the purchase and sale of such items, “Bullion Express provides an education-

based atmosphere to accommodate all levels of interest,” Mason explains. “Whether you’d like to diversify your financial portfolio with physical gold and silver, sell unwanted jewelry, or find a nice pair of diamond earrings for that special occasion, Bullion Express should have what you’re looking for,” he points out.

Visit Bullion Express at 1831 St. Johns Avenue, online at www.bullionexpress.com, or call at 847-780-0010. As Seinfeld’s Banya says, ‘It’s gold, Jerry … gold!”

Wes Wenk covers professional endeavors, including nonprofit organizations and financial, medical, legal, and consulting businesses based in homes or offices. He can be reached at wenkinsurance.com or by fax at 847-433-1345.

10 SUMMER 2012

Pioneer JewelerJill Alberts jokingly calls herself a “pioneer.” Four years ago, she opened her own jewel box of a boutique, Jill Alberts Jewelry, on Roger Williams Avenue in Ravinia. She recalled that at the time, about the only businesses on the block were Field Violin Workshop, Joy Cleaners, the knitting store Magic Needle Inc., and a tanning salon (on which the sun has since set).

“I think it’s a great little street,” she said of her decision to move her jewelry manufacturing and design business out of her home, which is just around the corner from her shop. “I thought the location had great potential.”

Alberts, whose jewelry designs have been found at such stores as Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue, was right. Today, the Ravinia Business District has something it had been missing: buzz. Over the past three years, there has been an influx of new businesses that have garnered area-wide recognition and have made Roger Williams a destination location. The newest addition is ZuZu’s Tea House. Zuzu’s has the cachet of being owned by musician Billy Corgan, a Highland Park resident and front man of The Smashing Pumpkins.

Indeed the Ravinia Business District has “a lot of positives,” noted Doug Purington, publicity director for the Ravinia Neighbors Association, a non-profit organization devoted to preserving Ravinia’s unique

character. “It’s been a slow process, but when we look at what we have now and what’s coming down the road, we’re encouraged.”

entrepreneurs in Highland Park What the Ravinia Business District now has is an inviting mix of restaurants, retail, and services. Some are new kids on the block, but others are neighborhood mainstays, such as Piero’s Pizza, Ravinia Barbeque, and Jos. A. Palminteri Insurance. Since 1977, Vincent Pisto has owned Ravinia Barbershop, appreciating being in a neighborhood so friendly that “you can always leave your door open.” Happi Sushi Japanese Restaurant has been across the street from the barbershop for 16 years, owned for half of that time by Kimberly Choy. “The new businesses on the street are definitely good for us,” said Choy. “Everyone knows we are here in the summertime because they come to Ravinia (for concerts), but the new businesses bring more people to the street year round.”

Entrepreneurs such as Alberts helped open the door to the area’s turnaround, but many credit Abigail’s American Bistro, which recently celebrated its third anniversary, with giving the area an extra boost and heightened visibility. “Abigail’s was a turning point,” Alberts said. “It brought a lot of people to the street that didn’t know it existed in a commercial sense.”

The past few years also have seen the addition of a variety of other businesses, including MACnician — which specializes in repairing and helping with all things MAC — Principessa Children’s Boutique, SoShee Boutique, North Shore Chinese Medicine, and Calm Massage Therapy Center. Highland Park Bank & Trust opened a walk-in branch in the neighborhood too, offering customers help with their banking needs, as well as biscuits for their dogs. The newest resident on Roger Williams Avenue, Zina Katsman Piano Studio, opened just weeks ago in the space vacated by The Nail Shop when it moved a few doors east last spring.

“It’s important to have a vibrant commercial area with a lot of small local businesses,” Alberts said. “It’s nice to be able to walk someplace for lunch or dinner, and also pick up your dry cleaning.” The presence of Gordon in Ravinia and other hair and nail salons is also key to having a good mix of businesses.

The History of change“It’s been a gradual metamorphosis,” Purington said. “Five years ago, there were a lot of vacancies. We just didn’t have the kind of synergy (we’re seeing today) in the types of offerings to consumers.”

Founded in 1998, the RNA has championed improvement of the business district, working closely with Highland Park’s Department of Economic Development. One of its challenges is achieving a balance

between attracting viable commerce and retaining the character of the district. The RNA worked, for example, with Walgreen’s to modify its traditional neon sign.

“It’s a double-edged sword,” agrees Michael Paulson, owner of Abigail’s. “I’m

a city boy at heart, so I like the buzz of a neighborhood, but the reason I chose this corner (at Roger Williams and St. Johns Avenue) was because it had a comfortable, casual, artsy feel to it. I don’t know if I want to disturb that. We don’t mind being a destination, but we are certainly a neighborhood restaurant.”

The Ravinia Business District has reached out to the entrepreneur more than franchises. Cheryl Richter, owner of Belle Fleur, has, like Jill Alberts, had something

of a front row seat for Ravinia’s revitalization. “I had always wanted a little store,” she said. “I live in Ravinia. This (location) was the perfect spot and it was just the right time in my life to do it.”

Richter opened her charming and whimsical boutique (“I wish every storefront could look like hers,” Purington enthused) in 2008, just

as the economy collapsed. But things have “picked up beautifully,” she said, thanks in part to street traffic generated by Abigail’s. “It’s more of a go-to destination now.”

The Ravinia Wine Shop, which just marked its one-year anniversary, is another

entrepreneurial enterprise that has carved a unique niche in the neighborhood. It specializes in small-batch wine producers

not found in grocery stores, said manager Sharon Mackin-Norberg. “We felt it was a natural for the Ravinia area, being so close to the Ravinia Festival,” she said.

Mackin-Norberg also is at the helm at ZuZu’s, which will also feature offerings unique to the area. The teahouse specializes in teas from all over the world as well as coffees and “creative pastries” from local bakeries, such as the Bent Fork. The concept, Mackin-Norberg said, is “a space where you can be exposed to a lot

of different media, including art, music, photography, lectures, and possibly film.”

She envisions it as an afternoon gathering spot for high school kids (yes, there is wi-fi), but also as a pre-and-post Ravinia Festival destination, not only for patrons, but perhaps for the musicians as well, who might come and relax or even play.

“This would be a great place to do an open mike,” she said. Owner “Billy (Corgan) has talked about how where he grew up there was not a place where he could play (music). We want to offer that.”

One reason for the rise of the Ravinia Business District is that innovation is welcome here, business owners said. “Our (wine shop) customers welcomed us with open arms,’ Mackin-Norberg said. “They expressed how happy they are that there is something like this in the neighborhood that’s comparable to things they’d seen in New York.”

spread the Word Spreading the word about Ravinia is a top priority for business owners who would like to see increased signage along Green Bay Road, Sheridan Road, or at the train station directing people to the business district.

“We get a lot of calls from people who assume we’re in downtown Highland Park,”

said Peter Rauser, co-owner of Baker Boys, which just celebrated its second anniversary. The shop’s desserts, which include cookies, cupcakes and custard, recently took top honors in a Patch.com Reader’s Poll.

“I knew about Highland Park and spent a lot of time there,” echoed Paulson, “but I was pretty much ignorant that there was a little business district south of Highland Park.”

Increased signage is also atop the RNA’s wish list, along with improved streetscaping and such enhanced amenities as better lighting in the public areas, benches, bike

racks, and pedestrian walkways, all of which will most likely be financed through Tax Increment Financing, Purington said.

Pleasing to the eye Enhancing the area’s streetscape is also a major objective of the Ravinia Business District Alliance (RBDA), a group created by the city to promote Ravinia businesses and activities. Katie Wiswald, Chair of the RBDA, said it is important that the area’s

businesses, property owners, and residents work together in offering the design team assistance in establishing a cohesive branding element that will clearly identify the area. Wiswald said that to this end, two outside “groups have been chosen by the Ravinia Business District Alliance and approved by the City Council. One group will work to offer a streetscape plan for the area, and another will provide information about the area’s infrastructure.”

Until further enhancements are made, business owners are buoyed by the changes they’ve seen in the last five years, which they hope bode well for the district’s future. Ravinia Florist is scheduled to open soon, and there is widespread hope that the long-vacant space once occupied by neighborhood icon Shelton’s will someday re-open as a new breakfast/lunch establishment.

“Change is good,” Paulson said. “You want to see new businesses successful. You want

Ravinia, and Highland Park for that matter, to be in the forefront of people’s minds, especially from a shopping perspective.”

18 SUMMER 2012

a Dog’s Best Friend

Highland Park has always been a breed apart when it comes to providing local dog owners with amenities and services for their beloved companions.

The city, for example, has just unleashed a new dog park at the south end of Fink Park. The new park was designed to answer residents’ requests for a year-round off-leash dog park that is more accessible than the one at Moraine Park Dog Beach, said Park District of Highland Park Director of Parks Ted Baker.

The new park has been in the works for more than two years, and its planning has included input from local dog owners. Topping residents’ wish lists, Baker said, was a dog park that, unlike Moraine with its long stairway leading down to the beach, was a park that is ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant. Residents also wanted a park with separate fenced sections for big dogs and small dogs. The Fink facility has all this, plus wash stations, a dog drinking fountain, benches, and other features.

Moraine Dog Beach, however, remains a popular option. The Dog Beach is open from April through October. During the winter months dogs can romp at the Highland Park Golf Learning Center, 2205 Skokie Valley Road.

A picture permit card is required for all three Park District facilities. The fee is $40 per dog for residents and $140 for non-residents. Owners can register their pets at Heller Nature Center, 2821 Ridge Road, or they can download an application online.

Rover’s Place (1238 Old Skokie Road, 847-831-3784), The Barking Lot (495 Lake Cook Road, Deerfield, 847-205-3647), and Christensen Animal Hospital (730 Hibbard Road, Wilmette, 847-251-2600) are also popular with many area residents who go the extra mile for their pets.

Christensen Animal Hospital offers minimally invasive laser surgery, and it is also a full-service veterinary medical and boarding facility. Rover’s Place and the Barking Lot specialize in boarding, grooming, and daycare.

Rover’s Place is “where your dog is treated like royalty,” said Ruth Ann Cooper, the facility’s marketing manager. “We roll out the red carpet for your dog.”

Buddy, a 9-year-old golden doodle, has walked Rover’s red carpet “literally since a few months after he was born,” said his owner and local resident Julie Stone. “Once I pull up to Rover’s with Buddy and he gets out of the car, he drags me inside.” Stone said she knows her dog loves all the attention Rover’s Place staff gives her dog — especially all the ball throwing.

Cooper said everyone who works at Rover’s feels it is important that visiting dogs have just as much fun and feel just as comfortable there as they do when they are at home. For that reason, Rover’s offers “a kind of feng shui approach in terms of atmosphere that includes classical music and scented candles.” But technology is not ignored! In the suites area, a television set is often tuned to one of the guests’ favorite channels, “Animal Planet.”

Matt Krieser, a Highland Park native and Barking Lot President and CEO, does not doubt how important it is that a dog be treated just as well outside the home as in it. “I believe the majority of people view their dog as a part of their family, and we’re going to treat a pet as if it were a (customer’s) son or daughter.”

Kreiser, who owns the Barking Lot with his brother, grew up “very dog,” he said. “We always had three dogs in the house, and we always had a dream of doing something related to dogs. The original inspiration was to create a kennel that was more like a vacation spot for dogs, and a place that they would want to come back.”

The Barking Lot’s slogan proclaims the facility offers “everything under one woof” (save for veterinarian services). In addition to providing overnight boarding, daycare, and training, also offered are pick-up and drop off services, at-home dog walking, and all-natural, high-end dog food and treats.

Also for those who want to feed their dogs nothing but the best and healthiest, Northshore Pet Chef (30 Highland Place, 847-920-4PET) literally delivers, said owner Robert Freeman. “I deliver all natural, nutrient-dense, and healthy dog (and cat) foods to people’s homes,” he said.

The food is from a Lisbon, Ohio company that, Freeman said, “has never had a recall in more than 34 years. They use all U.S. ingredients, and the foods contain no by-products, fillers or chemical additives. They are all gluten-free.”

A marketer for three decades, Freeman became involved with the nationwide Pet Chef Express organization as a way to “help the community,” he said. “Highland Park dog owners really love their dogs. This is an opportunity for me to help them help their dogs live longer and have healthier lives.”

19SUMMER 2012

a Dog’s Best Friend

Every dog, they say, has its day, and in our area, there are two days that are of special interest to man and woman’s best friend. The first is Woofstock, and the second is the Spooky Pooch Parade.

Woofstock is the Highland Park Park District’s annual autumnal dog-and-people party. This year’s free event, which will be held at the city’s new dog park in Fink Park, “will be much more accessible than in past years,” said Emily Biang, Communications Coordinator for the Park District of Highland Park, and, as always, “it will be a great way for members of the community to get together and share their passion for their dogs.”

The Spooky Pooch Parade is the Chicago Botanic Garden’s annual fall event for dogs and the people who love them. What began years ago as the Garden’s wintertime “Reindog Parade” morphed into an October event to take advantage of better weather, said Julie McCaffrey, manager of Media Relations at the Garden. This year’s parade will be Oct. 29. Advance tickets are $14 for members, and $17 for non-members. All tickets at the door will be $20. Past parades have had up to 300 dogs, said McCaffrey, who added that, “Dog-owners look forward to this event every year. Spectators like it as much as the owners and the dogs do.”

But if someone really wants to make a dog’s day, he or she can adopt a pooch from one of several area no-kill shelters, including Orphans of the Storm (2200 Riverwoods

Road, Riverwoods, 847-945-0235), Save-A-Pet (31664 County Highway 49, Grayslake, 847-740-7788), and Tails of Hope (1628 Old Deerfield Road, Highland Park, 847-557-9554). All three shelters specialize in providing furry friends to good homes.

As the name of my column is “Contractors’ Corner,” I thought it would be worth highlighting area contractors that you should have in your corner. Several local suppliers to both the retail public and contractors are also members of the Chamber of Commerce, and these businesses deserve your support the next time you or your contractor need materials for a project.

The nearly century-old Mutual Services of Highland Park, Inc. (1393 Half Day Road, www.mutualace.com), owned and

operated by the Sheahan family for four generations, got its start as a small coal delivery service in 1917, morphed into a sand and gravel business after World War II, and then expanded to sell tools and steel in the 1950s. Today, cousins Dane and Christopher Sheahen, whose great, great grandfather’s farmland is the site of Sunset Park, run the business.

Mutual Services is a three-prong operation: Mutual Rentals, Mutual Steel, and Mutual Ace Hardware. Mutual Rentals rents tools and equipment such as Bobcats and generators, as well as tents and party items (Slushy Margarita Machine, anyone?). Mutual Steel, which specializes in residential and light commercial structural steel framing, has

supplied the steel for the newest addition to Sunset Foods and also the steel for the lion cages at Lincoln Park Zoo. But it’s Mutual Services’ flagship division, Mutual Ace Hardware, which is perhaps the most well known part of the business. Mutual Ace, with its slogan of “the helpful place,” is where handymen, remodelers, builders and do-it-yourselfers look for a broad selection of tools as well as plumbing, electrical, and heating/cooling supplies.

Craftwood Lumber & Hardware (1590 Old Deerfield Road, 847-831-2800, www.craftwoodlumber.com) has been in business at the same location in Highland Park for over 60 years. The store’s unique selection of lumber, hardware, and cabinetry, coupled with outstanding services, set Craftwood apart from the average home center. According to owner David Brunjes, “Over the years, we have tailored our inventory and services to the needs of the community. I believe in maintaining the breadth and depth of products in stock so we can supply our customers with everything they need to repair or remodel anything in their home, from start to finish.”

Craftwood stocks specialty lumber not found in most lumberyards, and the business offers a huge selection of stock moldings. The store’s experienced on-site carpenter can

help you or your contractor make the right choices for your projects. Materials too big to fit in your car? No worries, as the store can deliver purchases directly to a job site.

Brunjes said, “We are able to help our customers any time of the day, no appointment needed.” He continued, “Our operating philosophy is to have better educated employees. Our average employee has been with us for 15 years and one employee—John Streicher— has been with Craftwood since we opened our doors in 1956.”

One of Highland Park’s oldest businesses is Menoni & Mocogni, Inc. (2160 Skokie Valley Road, 847-432-0850, www.menoniandmocogni.com). The company has been supplying Northern Cook County and Lake County with quality building and landscaping materials since 1909. Looking for “pink chip” gravel? What about “white alpine chip” gravel? These are just two of the too-pretty-to-be-just-called-gravel gravels Menoni & Mocogni offers. Other popular products sold include sand, crushed stone (both decorative and for backfill), mulch, ground cover, black dirt, drainage products, mason supplies, and related tools.

Another specialty of Menoni & Mocogni is such hardscape materials as bluestone, flagstone, and brick. The company is also one of the area’s largest suppliers of Unilock Pavers. Use of these hardscape materials results in beautiful walkways, driveways, patios, retaining walls, fireplaces, and even brick ovens (mmmmm, wood-fired pizza).

The same philosophy of exceptional customer service, the right inventory, and competitive pricing shared by Menoni & Mocogni, Craftwood, and Mutual Services also have been the secret to success at Idlewood Electric (114 Skokie Valley Road, 847-831-3600, www.idlewoodelectric.com Contractors and homeowners alike appreciate the personal attention that the trained Idlewood staff has provided for the past 54 years. Idlewood employees regularly attend training classes, programs, and trade shows so they can better educate customers on the latest products and techniques available.

When it comes to lighting, it can be argued that no one does it better than Idlewood. And those in the market for electrical materials know that when they go to Idlewood, what they want will be in stock—

even the hard to find items. In addition to the showroom sales team assisting in the decorative lighting selection process, they also work with clients to select dimming systems, electronic or battery-operated shades, blinds, and drapery. Lighting specialists also can assist in creating landscape lighting designs to harmonize with your home and its surroundings.

24 SUMMER 2012

Highland Park’sThe heroine of “Sex and the City” fervently believed in “a woman’s right to shoes.” Highland Park retailers salute like-minded shoe fashionistas and afford them the opportunity to exercise that right with footwear in all styles and for all seasons. Our community is home to more than half a dozen footwear retailers and other fine merchants that sell shoes as part of their product mix.

Are you the athletic type? Check out fitness footwear at New Balance for the right pair of shoes. (610 Central Avenue, 847-266-8323, www.shopnewbalance.com).

“Each type of sport shoe is designed for a specific purpose, letting the wearer comfortably engage in the activity, without stress or injury to the foot,” said store owner Allen Adelman. “A well-fitting shoe should allow the foot to expand to its natural shape, without constriction. You should be able to wiggle your toes freely without bumping into the front of the shoe.

“The summer’s hottest footwear is minimalist shoes that create the experience of being nearly barefoot,” he added. “Our new line of NB Minimus shoes is ideal for running, walking, and fitness. They’re light, low to the ground, and feel like outdoor slippers.”

For those climbing to the top, the first steps start at Uncle Dan’s (621 Central Avenue, 847-266-8600, www.udans.com). A fixture in Highland Park since 1996, Uncle Dan’s is the go-to source for outdoor adventure

gear. “Definitely our most popular style is the Vibram Five Fingers running shoe,” said owner Brent Weiss. “This is a multi-sport shoe that makes you feel like you’re running barefoot. Because the shoes are so versatile, wearable in and out of water, people use them for all kinds of sports.”

“Another really cool shoe is the colorful XR Mission Trail Runners by Salomon. While these door-to-trail shoes are specifically designed for optimum movement for women, they’re just awesome,” Weiss said. “These are the shoes you’re going to see Highland Park women wearing to Starbucks.”

Uncle Dan’s takes pride in being responsive to customers’ needs. Weiss said, “People asked about these very durable, leather sandals called Rainbows that they had seen in California but couldn’t find locally, and they asked us to carry them. Now we do.”

Why do women so love their shoes? “Because they’re like jewelry for your feet!” observed Janine Galante, manager of Lori’s Shoes (585 Central Avenue, 847-681-1532, www.lorisshoes.com). And Lori’s stocks some real gems. Owner Lori Andre “travels to Italy several times a year to purchase shoes that are unique to the store and

keep loyal customers coming back,” Galante said. “New styles arrive almost daily, and we discount anywhere from 5 - 20% off retail.”

What’s the summer shoe forecast? “Wedgies, espadrilles, and shoes in bright colors that pop are bigger than ever,” Galante said. “For fall, boots are going to be edgy. Studs, distressing, vintage looks will be in.”

For a mix of contemporary and classic shoe styles, step in to Saks Fifth Avenue (1849 Green Bay Road, 847-681-5100, www.saksfifthavenue.com). Saks is known for carrying such upscale brands as Jimmy Choo, Gucci, Prada, Tory Burch, KORS, Kate Spade, and Stuart Weitzman. “Right now, platform sandals and pumps are our most popular styles,” said Peggy Sandholm, marketing coordinator. “Open air sandals and bright, bold pumps are big. For fall, you’ll be seeing boots, from ankle to stovepipe, as well as menswear-inspired shoes. Python and (other) snakeskins are always trendy for any season. Another great choice you can’t go wrong with is our nude-colored patent leather.”

At ShoeFly (599 Elm Place, 847-433-9910, www.shoeflyhp.com), going casual doesn’t mean giving up on high style. “There are so many varieties, styles, and colors to choose from -- wedges, heels, flip flops, sandals,” offered manager Mickey Shapiro. “Women like to make a fashion statement with shoes. “Saddle brown and camel are the hottest colors for summer with high and mid-wedges for styles. High-heel platform pumps are also popular.”

Got sole!service, provided by a staff that collectively has more than 80 years of experience fitting shoes. Shapiro said that another plus for the store is that it carries edgier, harder-to-find brands like Tsubo for comfort and Antelope, a high fashion casual line. If a teenage girl wants to wear really high heels, but her parents aren’t on board, ShoeFly can cut up to half an inch off the heels.

In terms of flat shoes, “Sperry Top-Siders are back in a huge way,” said Azad Bayzaee, manager of the Bootery (492 Central Avenue, 847-433-1911, www.thebootery.com). For more than three decades, customers have been getting a kick out of this Highland Park mainstay, owned by Roger Wolff. The Bootery carries comfort brands like UGG, Sperry, Merrell, Keen, Fitflop, and Naot, as well as great fashion footwear.

“TOMS continues to be a very hot brand in a huge variety of colors and patterns. And this season’s fringe and beading designs have made Minnetonka in-demand again,” said Bayzaee. Another very big influence today, he continued, “is Western — whether a true “cowboy” boot or Western-influence

toe shapes and heels. Overall, it’s a great boot season again, with plenty of flats for a lighter look during the fall.”

Why the fascination with shoes? “For women, shoes can be an accessory, a showcase, or a great conversation starter,” Bayzaee commented. “They can make you feel like a million bucks!”

28 SUMMER 2012

By Don Miner, Senior Center Manager

The lyrics to the theme from the popular 1980 - 90s TV show “Cheers” suggested, “Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name.” And for adults over 50 in our community, the place to go where people are “always glad you came” is the Highland Park Senior Center (HPSC).

About a dozen years ago, urban sociologist Ray Oldenburg coined the phrase “the third place.” He called a person’s “first place” his or her home, and the “second place” where he or she worked. The third place was identified as where a person enjoyed additional creative and/or social interaction. For TV’s Norm and Cliff, it was the bar at Cheers. For Highland Parkers such as Irving Moses, it is the Senior Center.

Moses started coming to the Center before he retired as an architect, a profession in which he said he, “built 250 houses in Highland Park alone.” Always interested in painting, he has, for the last 10 years, taught oil and acrylic painting at the HPSC.

“Let me do the math,” he said, “I’ve been a painter 80 years — since I was 5 years old.” Although he comes to the Center three times a week, it is on Wednesday mornings that he teaches his 2 - hour class, an experience he finds a “real pleasure.”

In addition to painting and ceramics classes, the Senior Center provides a wide array of other programming that includes intergenerational activities and such exercise classes as Zumba and Tai Chi. Member and Center volunteer Shelly Fairman is a fan of Mix It Up classes, which focus on strength training, toning, and cardio workouts.

“Except for tennis, I would never exercise without this class as I hate plain old exercise,” she said. “Also, the class takes place in such a beautiful, cozy environment overlooking the lake.”

Indeed the view of Lake Michigan from the exercise room is spectacular. The Center is located at 54 Laurel Avenue, which is the last house on the right side of the street, facing the lake front. A private residence designed by noted architect William Mann and built in the late 1920’s for

General Robert E. Wood, former Chairman of Sears, Roebuck & Co., the home is a local landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Although the building is indeed a place conducive for members to learn or improve on a skill or talent, the sense of community the Center fosters is a moveable feast. HPSC offers many fun and entertaining trips and special events to meet members’ wide range of interests.

For example, this summer, sports fans shouldn’t miss the Senior Center’s trip to see the White Sox play the Minnesota Twins at U.S. Cellular Field on July 20. No ordinary day at the ballpark, the outing will include a patio party featuring barbecue ribs, Cajun

chicken, fried chicken, hot dogs, hamburgers, side salads, soft drinks, wine, and beer.

Because sports are more than just spectator events, Center members are also invited to participate in the Illinois Parks and Recreation Association (IPRA) Six-County Senior Olympics. Held this month in Park Ridge and neighboring communities, the

event is a great opportunity for older adults to have fun, compete with area peers, and receive recognition for their efforts.

The Senior Olympics is open to seniors of all ability levels, and includes more than 30 events that include tennis, bowling, swimming, biking, track and field, bocce ball, and volleyball. In addition, IPRA will host an 18 - hole golf outing on July 25.

For members with an interest in the great outdoors, the Center is collaborating with the Park District of Highland Park to offer “Lunch and Learn” nature workshops. Birds do it, bees do it, and seniors can learn how plants follow suit on July 20 at a Heller Nature Center program with the intriguing name, “The Sex Life of Plants.” Another Heller nature session open to seniors August 24 will examine wildlife monitoring. Lunch will be served at both programs.

For members who want to mix it up a bit, the Center’s summer “Mix and Mingle” series includes a trivia night at Gabe’s Backstage Lounge in Highwood. Also offered is a Ravinia Festival dinner and dance excursion.

The Highland Park Senior Center, a Division of the City of Highland Park, was created in 1976 to meet the needs of the community’s senior population. Center gift certificates are a great option to honor a friend or loved one celebrating a special occasion. The certificates can be purchased in any amount (minimum $10) and may be used toward membership dues, trips, special events, or classes at a place where it’s great to be known as “a regular.”

For more information, call 847-432-4110, or visit www.cityhpil.com/seniorcenter.

‘‘Cheers’’ to the HP Senior Center

cargo for BoysMother Goose declared, “Snips and snails and puppy dog tails — that’s what little boys are made of.” But what do they like to wear? If Mother Goose lived in Highland Park, she would no doubt say, “Cargo’s shorts and hoodies and cool graphic Tees —that’s what little boys like to wear.”

Cargo for Boys is an independent retailer that specializes in apparel for boys age 12 months to size 18/20. It’s also a place that lets boys run around and play video games while their parents shop. What kind of video games? “We have Super Mario Cart and Hedgehog Super Sonic— old school games, but kids of all ages love’ em,” said Cargo’s owner Bob Geisheker. And what kind of clothes does Cargo for Boys sell? The store specializes in the Wes and Willy clothing line, known for its ultra soft graphic T-shirts, as well as for its durability.

Wes and Willy clothes are designed with a rough and tumble boy in mind, and Geisheker said the items are “super comfortable, pre-washed all cotton, of amazing quality, and very, very cool. Also Wes and Willy has the best swimsuits in the industry. Not only do their colors last through daily plunges into the chlorine pools, but the suits dry super fast.”

Highland Park is “the best place on the North Shore to have a store,” Geisheker said. Customer reaction has been great, and

Geisheker often gets comments such as “Finally a store for boys and (one) with great selection.”

Cargo for Boys is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

Wieland FlowersWhat’s old is new again at Wieland Flowers. Local resident Laura Rafferty recently purchased Highland Park’s oldest flower shop, in business since 1931.

Rafferty sells bouquets, blooming plants, and stunning arrangements from her beautifully restored shop. She has transformed the look of the store by bringing it back to its original appearance that includes a tin ceiling and crown molding. Her past career as an interior designer is obvious when you step into this charming space full of fragrant flowers and greenery.

“People keep coming in, excited to see all the changes in the shop. And my customers know that I am committed to selling only the freshest flowers available,” Rafferty said. She added that some of the shop’s most popular flowers are the exotics, such as bird of paradise and anthurium.

Rafferty and her assistant Sue Grayson make all the arrangements. “It’s nice to be creative,” Rafferty said, and “to meet nice people in your work.”

Now was the perfect time, Rafferty said, for her to buy the business. “My youngest is about to start high school, and my oldest is 16.” Any guesses on where those kids will get their Homecoming flowers?

Wieland Flowers is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

FlywheelIndoor cycling has become quite a phenomenon, and Flywheel Sports is challenging Highland Parkers to take spinning to a new level and to “never coast.”

The Highland Park spin studio features Flywheel’s proprietary “FireFly” bikes that allow a rider to set the positions to fit his or her body and comfort levels. Other amenities such as D.J. choreographed playlists contribute to some of the best 45- to 60-minute workouts around. Stadium-style seating and real-time personal performance tracking are also key to the Flywheel experience. “Special technology attached to each bike stores your biking data in your private Flywheel account, so later you can check your results online and track your progress,” said Location Manager Lia Surkis.

“Flywheel is a luxury brand that started in New York. Now there are 12 locations nationwide,” explained Surkis. “We felt Highland Park was a good fit for us. There’s also a Flywheel in Chicago on the Gold Coast.”

Surkis said that many people sign up for spinning class, but others just walk in for a session. In the “Dog Days of Summer,” Surkis invites Highland Parkers to “beat the heat and come on in and exercise with us!”

Flywheel is open seven days a week. Hours vary. Reservations can be made online.

Menchies Frozen YogurtMix. Weigh. Pay. Yum! Repeat? Definitely. Menchies Frozen Yogurt enjoys oodles of returning customers, said Kim Hardy, who owns the Highland Park Menchies franchise with sisters Jody Wolk and Courtney Beaulieu.

A Northbrook resident, Hardy said, “Honestly, I looked all over the North Shore, and Highland Park was the perfect fit. It’s a nice size town, with a busy downtown that has lots of stores and restaurants and movie theatres. It’s great to be here. We’ve been very, very busy.”

The bright and cheery dessert shop features 14 rotating flavors of yogurt and over 70 toppings that include sauces, fruit, and “snackages” such as granola, sprinkles, candy, and nuts. What are customers’ favorites? Cake Batter is the #1 best-selling yogurt flavor, followed by Red Velvet, Chocolate, and Vanilla, Hardy offered. As

for toppings, Gummi Bears, Sprinkles, and Oreos are the most requested.

“We sell a low-carb product and a sugar-free one. We also have a Kosher product, which is important to a lot of people. And we have a gluten-free product. And no hormones are added,” said Hardy.

“People love that you can make your own treats,” she added. Desserts are sold by weight, not by

the number of toppings, so customers can get pretty imaginative with their creations. “Green Apple Tart” yogurt topped with snow caps and pineapple chunks, anyone?

Menchies is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Lash L’Heureux coterie Bat your eyelashes after a visit to Lash L’Heureux Coterie, and everyone will take notice. This new boutique salon features an array of services, but the main focus is on eye-enhancing procedures.

Lash extension offerings include “VaVa Voom,” which takes your lashes to their full potential; “Au Natural,” which makes you look like you are wearing just a light coat of mascara; and “Lash Flares,” which are small groups of extensions placed at the lash line. “I had fun with my family naming the services,” said owner Brian L’Heureux. “We sat around the table, and I had a list of potential names, and family members would check off their favorites.”

North Shore resident L’Heureux and his mother Dottie own the shop. Brian is the artist, and Dottie is actually a client, coming in for services from her home outside Omaha every three weeks. “My mom is addicted to her lash extensions,” L’Heureux said.

L’Heureux began his career in the beauty industry as a personal assistant in the television division of Warner Bros., where he worked for 12 years. Before setting up shop in Highland Park, he was dividing his time among three places — Chicago, L.A., and Miami — when he decided he wanted less commuting and also that he wanted to settle in at a salon. He opened his shop in Highland Park, “because it felt like home.”

L’Heureux said his salon “offers a high end service with a casual feeling. I don’t want to work in a stuffy environment, and we have fun at the shop,” he said, adding that there is no other salon in the area that specializes in eye-enhancing products. Come have a look!

The LastWORDstudent Honor DinnerTwenty-seven exceptional HPHS seniors were honored by the Highland Park Chamber of Commerce for excellence in academics, sports, community service and extra-curricular activities, as well as their special character. This was the 47th year of the annual Chamber event.

Academic Tutoring Centers served as the event’s Presenting Sponsor, aligning with its mission to help students succeed. Highlights of the evening included a funny yet touching video produced by the HPHS media department, and Principal Brad Swanson’s insightful, personalized comments about each student. In addition, individual $1000 scholarships toward college were awarded by the following generous donors: Martha & Lorry Hershenson and Danielle Mayer in honor of William S. Bradford, DDS and William S. Bradford, Jr.; Highland Park Chamber of Commerce; First Bank of Highland Park; American Legion Post 145 Highland Park; NorthShore University HealthSystem-Highland Park Hospital; Ravinia Festival; and Good Morning Rotary Club.

Students were selected by the high school. Those honored were: Elizabeth Angeles, Daniel Antezana, Zachary Brint, Burton Chaikin, Camille Codell, Maria Cruz, Jason Deitch, Angelina Fabbri, Joshua Friedenberg, Sophie Friedman, Spencer Hile, Ross Hochwert, Jacob Humerick, Ali Katz, Stephanie Kaufman, Attilio Lavalle, Kayla McCraren, Nicole Nedoss, Amber O’Brien, Philip Ostrov, Bryce Robertson, Emma Ryan, Daniel Santoyo, Kimberly Siegel, William Smolen, Logan Weiss, and Sabrina Zionts.

Consider being a part of next year’s celebration. Attending and contributing to the annual event is a fabulous way to honor

some of the best and the brightest young people in our community. Contributions are accepted all year long. For more information, contact the Highland Park Chamber of Commerce at 847-432-0284 or [email protected].

Open circle

The Highland Park Chamber of Commerce has just launched a new dynamic peer-to-

peer forum called Open Circle. Chamber Executive Director Ginny Glasner said, “Many businesses face common issues and concerns, and Open Circle is an informal way for business professionals to share challenges and ideas, and hopefully learn solutions from their contemporaries.”

Each hour-long Open Circle session will tackle a different topic of interest to business people. Emails announcing the topic and the location and date of an upcoming session will be sent to Chamber members. Other interested participants can contact the Chamber at 847-432-0284 or [email protected] for more information.

The “Masters” of Amateur Golf

The 110th Western Amateur Championship, sponsored by the Western Golf Association and the Evans Scholar Foundation, returns

to Highland Park’s Exmoor Country Club from July 30 to August 4.

Dating back to 1899, the Western Amateur is one of the oldest, most important tests in amateur golf. The 2012 tournament will host 156 of the best amateur golfers from around the world. Among past winners are Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Justin Leonard, and Ryan Moore.

The Western Amateur presents the opportunity to view up-close-and-personal

the best amateur golfers in the world without any charge for admission or parking. “It’s as close as you can get to the action at a major sporting event,” said Robert Saliba, co-Chairman of the Exmoor Tournament committee. The ultimate beneficiary of the tournament is the Evans Scholars Foundation and the 860 young men and women attending 19 colleges on an Evans scholarship. For more information on the tournament, go to www.thewesternamateur.com.

HP — Always Tasty! This year’s Taste of Highland Park will be held August 24th through the 26th coinciding with the always popular Port Clinton Art Festival, with its fabulous art offerings, on the 25th and 26th. But don’t limit your tasting pleasures to these annual events. Delicious dining experiences are a year-round pleasure in Highland Park.

On 2nd Street, the recently opened Moderno has diners spilling outside, enjoying the restaurant’s charming patio. Chef John des Rosiers creates Italian fare with an unexpected twist. For example, blueberries and pancetta mix it up with sheep cheese and English peas to create a linguini dish you’ll want to experience again and again.

Also on Second Street, things have really changed inside the façade of Stash’s Grill. Owners Bobby and Debbie Dubin have transformed their original restaurant into a trio of fine eateries that include their original Stash’s plus two popular “after dark” offerings, 2nd Street Bistro and 2nd Street Enoteca.

Around the corner on Central Avenue, Missy Crovetti’s M Restaurant shows off her Kentucky roots. If M’s inviting outdoor seating is not enough of a lure on a summer night, the restaurant also offers fine Southern cooking, plenty of wine and Bourbon options, and down home hospitality.

A few blocks east on Central Avenue, In The Raw will serve up soups, sides, specialties, and “sharing plates” that are organic, vegan, gluten-free, and uncooked. This “living foods café” is based on the idea that the most nutritious food is food served in its most natural, unaltered state.
