A reaction between Hydrogen and Fluorine takes place. Which one is oxidized and which one is reduced?
The reaction between hydrogen and fluorine is an example of an oxidationreduction reaction:
H2 + F2 → 2 HF
The overall reaction may be written as two halfreactions:
H2 → 2H+ + 2e− (the oxidation reaction) E= 0.00V
F2 + 2e− → 2F− (the reduction reaction) E= 2.87V
There is no net change in charge in a redox reaction so the excess electrons in the oxidation reaction must equal the number of electrons consumed by the reduction reaction. The ions combine to form hydrogen fluoride:
H2 + F2 → 2H+ + 2F− → 2HF E = 0.00V + 2.87V= 2.87V
