SCHOLARSHIP FUND AT THE

has had some very generous donors donate to
a Scholarship Fund. This fund is to be used
by people that may not be able to produce the
necessary fee to participate in an activity at The
Nick. If you are a friend, coach or anyone who
knows of someone that could use some
assistance please let WARA know. Please
contact our office at 569-1909.
THE SKATE PARK FINDS A
PERMANENT HOME
Several years ago, after surveying local youth, it
was decided that a skate park was needed in the
community. A group of individuals, service
organizations, and kids raised $35,000 for the
creation of the Wolfeboro Skate Park. Finding a
location was the next hurdle, and the park was
eventually erected in the parking lot of the Pop
Whalen Arena. It needed to be taken down in
the winter, and this assembly/disassembly
process was causing wear and tear on the
equipment. This year, The Nick donated a parcel
of land near its parking lot for the permanent
placement of the Skate Park. A grant from the
Lemaire Fund of the New Hampshire
Charitable Fund and a donation from the Rotary
Club of Wolfeboro allowed for the grading,
paving, fencing and set up of the park. The park
was donated to and accepted by the Town of
Wolfeboro and is now overseen by the Parks
and Rec department. If you are one of the
many people coming and going at The Nick-
you are sure to have seen all the activity at the
Skate Park!

LANDSCAPING THE NICK
On a sunny September afternoon at The Nick, amidst the flurry of soccer practices and young children on theplayground, Don McBride, Sabra McBride, JoanTheve, Linda Wilberton and Rhonda Alden of The Nick Landscapingcommittee (and one member’s spouse, Larry Wilberton) planted 44 shrubs & perennials in the new flowerbedsurrounding the flagpole. This new flowerbed was identified as the first priority while creating a much largerLandscaping Master Plan for the entire park.
Beginning in February, with the help of Janet Hepburn of Maidenstone, a design was formed to build a naturalstone retaining wall to support the commemorative brick and flagpole area and create a flowerbed. The naturallyaged stones were generously donated by Gail Tinker. Thanks to the hard labor of Steve Hale, Jesse Hale, JeffTinker, Kevin French, Wyatt French, Adam Foss and Chuck Haughey to move the donated rocks to The Nickand the expertise of mason Paul Nelson the stone wall was completed ahead of schedule.
The Nick Landscaping committee was able to secure Special Projects Funding from the New Hampshire masterGardeners Association (NHMGA) to buy the soil and plants to fill the flowerbed. In all, over $10,000, in goods, services and cash, was donated from community members and organizations to bring the flowerbed plan to reality.
Elsewhere in the park dozens of daylilies are planted around the many sign posts identifying fields. Daylilies weredonated by GreatWaters Bank & Trust, and by Les Turner of Merrymeeting Daylilies.
More phases of The Landscaping Master Plan will continue in the spring with the planting of shade trees, fundedin part by the Wolfeboro Garden Club.
In more recent months, thanks to Betsy Hoffman* of Stone Gardens in North Sandwich, NH, and Bill Hoffmanof William Hoffman Landscape Architects of Yarmouth, Maine, a formal Landscape Master Plan has beencompleted. The extensive experience of both Betsy and Bill was invaluable to the members of the LandscapingCommittee to ensure an effective and economical baseline for the plan. Through input from park personnel whosee and hear the needs of the park users throughout the year, specific needs were identified for individuals, families and groups who rent, and were addressed in the plan. Don McBride and Bill Hoffman made a formalpresentation of the Landscaping Master Plan to the WARA Board of Director on November 16.
The Landscape Master Plan presents concepts for landscaping numerous areas throughout the entire park, particularly around the Hopewell Pavilion and the playgrounds, creating much desired shade for this area.Another area identified for numerous shade trees is between the four baseball fields. Other conceptual highlightsinclude shaded picnic areas, softening the view of the parking lot from within the park, bleacher seating for thetrack that also satisfies a safety issue with the large rocks along the pavilion, quiet seating areas that offer fullviews of the entire park, and expanded parking. The Landscaping Master Plan concept diagrams are available forviewing through the WARA office.
The Landscaping Committee and several members of the community are very excited and anxious to getimplementation of the Landscaping Master Plan into full swing. Recognizing this may take several seasons, it isimportant to get as much planted as quickly as resources allow, in order to meet the needs of the park users andexpand the usability of the park as a whole. If you have any ideas, or wish to donate funds or services to theimplementation of the Landscaping Master Plan at The Nick, please call and leave your name at 569-1909 or e-mail [email protected]
(*It is with great sadness we acknowledge the December 6 passing of Betsy Hoffman. Our deepest condolencesgo out to her family and close friends.)
