A Quarterly Publication for Care Wear Volunteers, Inc. March 2001 Very sincere wishes for a healthy and happy new year to all Care Wear participants and their families. I must address a very serious matter because it will alter the contents of the newsletter until I can devote time to this issue myself or locate someone who can assist me. The issue is copyrights on patterns. In the past I have naively assumed that everyone would welcome charitable use of patterns and that publication of a pattern in this newsletter was not really a violation of law. I thought that out-of-print magazines could not enforce copyright of patterns. I thought that no one would really mind if Care Wear reprinted patterns because we were not charging for this newsletter and that the readers would use the patterns for charitable uses. Well, I was wrong! Now that I have been warned and I know that the copyright laws can be strictly interpreted—no matter what the use, I must conform to the law. Thus, I cannot reprint patterns that you send to me unless one of the following applies: 1. You designed the pattern. 2. There is no copyright on the pattern. 3. I have permission (in writing) to reprint the pattern—from the designer or other holder of the copyright. The law is clear and simple and Care Wear cannot violate the law. Many of the patterns that volunteers have sent to me have been typed. Some of the photocopies do not contain any information about the source. In the future, please include information about the source so that I can contact that source in order to request permission to reprint. This request process is not all that difficult. In fact, I received permission to reprint three patterns from Coats & Clark Corporation via an E-Mail message and FAX. Martha, my former student and good friend, was able to secure permission in a very short time. As you all know, I am employed full- time by Hood College in Academic and Career Services—not by Care Wear. Thus, time to work on Care Wear is very limited. In addition, I learned to knit and crochet many years ago and do not read the magazines or websites for knitters or crocheters. (FYI: I sew, but do knit hats when I do not have access to a sewing machine.) I welcome assistance from anyone who would like to help locate patterns that are free (and state that they may be reprinted). I don’t know if permission to reprint can be requested by others. If anyone has time to search for good patterns for Care Wear and would be willing to contact the company or designer who holds the copyright for a useful pattern, I would welcome assistance to try that approach. I can provide all of the essential information (IRS non-profit number status, etc.) As I begin this newsletter, I am not sure how many patterns I will be able to

Very sincere wishes for a healthy andhappy new year to all Care Wearparticipants and their families. I must address a very serious matterbecause it will alter the contents of thenewsletter until I can devote time to thisissue myself or locate someone who canassist me. The issue is copyrights onpatterns. Thus, I cannot reprintpatterns that you send to me unless one ofthe following applies:1. You designed the pattern.2. There is no copyright on the pattern.3. I have permission (in writing) to reprint

the pattern—from the designer or otherholder of the copyright.

The law is clear and simple and Care Wearcannot violate the law. Many of thepatterns that volunteers have sent to mehave been typed. Some of the photocopies

do not contain any information about thesource. In the future, please includeinformation about the source so that I cancontact that source in order to requestpermission to reprint. include. I did have fast response to an E-mail to Lion Brand Yarn Company torequest permission to reprint two patternssent to me by a volunteer. Sincere thanksto Lion Brand Yarn Company. For a while, there may be fewer patternsin the newsletters. But, I will try to get asmany permissions as I can. Thank you inadvance for any assistance that you canprovide. In the future, if you send patterns to me,please include the source and all that youknow about the pattern. If there is nocopyright or permission has been given toreprint the pattern for charitable uses, please include that information in writing. If there is a copyright, include anyinformation that you have about contactingthe copyright holder, such as E-mail orregular mailing address or telephonenumber. I will try to make time for thiseach month. Good news to report:1. Wal-Mart called on 12/5/2000 to ask

Obviously, they wererunning behind schedule because thecheck was typed approximately twoweeks after Make A Difference Day. Iwas pleased to receive assistance andreimburse Care Wear for the suppliesand materials purchased for October28th.

Congratulations to local groups that donate their handwork to hospitalized children andothers in need. Best wishes to everyone in “Hooks and Needles” in Massachusetts.

Hospital correction:Children’s Hospital of Oklahoma, Attn: Coordinator of Child Life, 4B Rm 4416,940 NE 13th, Oklahoma City, OK 73126, telephone-405-271-4952, FAX-405-271-7970,Needs: booties (preemie & full-term), bedsocks for children, diaper shirts, doll clothes, andreceiving blankets.

Very sincere thanks to Coats & Clark for donations to assist volunteers working on projects to aidhospitalized children. Without the assistance of C&C, we would have donated fewer hats, blankets, booties, etc., to hospitals. Many of you who received donated yarn did not know the source. A great deal of yarn aswell as fiberfill and felt came from Coats & Clark.

During 2000, we received a great deal of yarn from Leisure Arts. Very sincere thanks to Leisure Arts fortheir assistance throughout the past year. Care Wear volunteers donated many hats, booties, blankets, etc.,thanks to your help. Thank you, Linda!

More Hospital Corrections from Jill S (Buxton, ME): Rumford Community Hospital, Attn:Obstetrics (J.Carlton), P.O.Box 619, Rumford,ME, 04276. NEEDS: Full-term hats and sacque/sweater sets.

A letter to all Care Wear Volunteers:

Louise wrote that she was thrilled to see her Care Wear hat. Nicholas was the first birth atHealthAlliance Hospital, Leominster, MA, in 2001. She has 80 additional hats ready todonate. She keeps making them and keeping her hands busy. She mentioned that she wouldlike to attach a Care Wear tag to each hat and I would like to do that, too. Someday, CareWear will design labels and distribute them to volunteers so that all Care Wear donated itemscarry our organization name. Someday! That is on my list of things to do!!

Bonnet Pattern for volunteers who sew:

FYI: I have a box of donated knitting needles to distribute to individuals and groups who need knitting needles. All are metal andall are very long length. There are no short lengths, no double-pointed needles, and no circular needles. I have a large quantity oflarger sizes (11 and 13) and some sizes around 5 and 6. There is not a full range of sizes. Let me know if your group can usesome. In addition, I have polyester felt (vanilla color and dark green) that was donated for quilt filler. Even the skeptics arepleased with the results. If the felt is caught around the edges as you hem or bind the quilt and secured (tied or stitched) atreasonable intervals, it serves VERY well as quilt batting. Vanilla is a creamy yellow-orange color that does not show throughmost colors. Does show through white. Let me know if you can use some. I have NO yarn of any type. I have no fiberfill, quiltfabrics, flannel, or calico. I do have some dressmaking fabrics . Does anyone sew for adults in need? Some of these fabrics arenot washable (dry clean only). If you wish to receive any of the above items, please send me a postcard stating your preferences. If anyone is local and can pick up the supplies, include your telephone number. I will distribute all that I have received.
