The World Memon Organisation (WMO) has been striving for over a decade for the welfare and well being of the Memon Community of the entire world. Many major projects have been launched worldwide through which the Memon community has been benefitted.

At the occasion of the 11th Annual General Meeting and other Meetings of WMO held in Dubai from 17th to 18th November 2013, various matters were discussed and the progress of the last year was reviewed and the activities for the next year were planned.

More than 150 delegates of Memon Community from around the world attended the meetings. All the Chapters of WMO presented their Performance Reports of the last year.

In the meeting, a report regarding the proposed restructuring of the World Memon Organisation was presented. This proposal was approved by the Board of Management of WMO, the Board of Trustees of WMOCF and in the Annual General Meeting. At these meetings, it was decided to retain one organization to avoid duplication of work. The salient features of the Report of Governance Committee are included in this issue.

The WMOPC has decided to establish a WMO Education Endowment Fund for those students of the Memon Community who are from middle and upper middle class and do not qualify for Zakat. The students will be given long term loans for education out of the income of this Endowment Fund. The Board of Trustees of the WMOCF held in Dubai on 17th November 2013, has authorized the WMO Pakistan Chapter to utilize the Trustees’ Fund lying in its Bank Accounts in Pakistan.

It was also stressed that an all out efforts be made to increase the number of members of WMO so that the World Memon Organisation truly becomes an international body of the Memon Community.

Let all of us join hands to strengthen the WMO to bring about a revolution in the Memon community and pave the way forward. Let there be not a single member of the Community uneducated and live below the poverty line. This can only be achieved if all of us sincerely strive for it.

    12 MEMON ALAM NOVEMBER 2013

Honorable President of WMO, the Chairman of WMOCF, the Office Bearers of WMO and WMOCF, members of the Board of Management and Board of Trustees, and all other respected members. I am pleased to present before you the Report of the World Memon Organisation for the year ended 31st December 2012.

The World Memon Organisation has come a long way since its inception on 31st March 2002 at Dubai. WMO has completed its first decade of service to humanity and entered into a new decade with determination to work more vigorously for the welfare and well being of the community.

The WMO is now at a point when the last ten years have to be reviewed and the next ten years have to be planned. I had stressed this point at the last Annual General Meeting held in London and today, I am

again stressing on this point at this Meeting. The WMO has strived so hard over the years

but in fact, even after eleven years, the mission of WMO has just begun, in a sense, and a very long journey lies ahead. A lot more has to be done.

As you know, poverty in the Memon Community is indeed a great tragedy. The Memon Community is faced with numerous problems and poverty can be ascribed as one of the main causes for the multiple issues faced by the Community.

At the time of establishment of the World Memon Organisation (WMO), the pioneers of WMO recognized that education is the key to prosperity and is the only way to improve the quality and standards of living of the members of the MemonCommunity.OneoftheAims&Objectives, as mentioned in the Constitution of WMO, exclusively focuses on poverty alleviation:

“7.4. to work for the alleviation of poverty in the Memon Community and to

improve the quality and standards of living of its members.”

I take this opportunity to appeal to all members of WMO to work harder and make WMO stronger and help it to fulfill its vision and mission.

Elections of Office Bearers for 2012-2014

The year 2012 was an election year and accordingly Mr Yunus Sulaiman of South Africa was appointed as Election Commissioner by the Board to conduct the Elections in all active Chapters of the WMO. Individual Election Commissioners where thereafter appointed by him and very successful elections were carried out.

Thereafter, at the BOM Meetings held on 23rd June 2012, the following Office Bearers of the WMO were elected to hold office for 2 years:

REPORT OF THE WORLD MEMON ORGANISATION (WMO)Presented by Mr. Pir Muhammad A. Kaliya, Secretary General, WMO at the 11th Annual

Constitution Amendments A Constitution Amendment Committee was

appointed at the AGAM held in Sri Lanka and the Committee placed its recommendation for changes to the Constitution of the WMO, the Articles of Associations of the WMO CF and the Standings Orders of WMO and WMO CF. These were deliberated during the various meetings in London and were unanimously adopted by the general membership with some minor changes. The revised Constitution has addressed some critical short comings in the original constitution which was adopted at the inception of the Organization, and with these changes, Insha Allah the organization will become more Dynamic and Transparent Trustees

I am pleased to confirm that the total number of Trustees, at present, is 53, out of which 24 Trustees have paid their subscription in full. I think that there is a great potential in our community to become Trustees and with a little persuasion many members of the community may become Trustees.

Patrons There are also 69 Patrons of WMO.The

number of Patrons can also be increased if concerted efforts are made in this direction by each Chapter.

Life & Annual MembersThe number of Life and Annual members

is still very low and the office bearers of every chapter are earnestly requested to persuade the members of the community to join WMO.

Performance of the ChaptersThe welfare activities of WMO are being

carried out through its various chapters. In a short span of time, the welfare activities have

increased multifold particularly in India and Pakistan. Both these chapters are spending huge amounts in providing financial help for education, housing, etc.

FundsThe welfare budget of WMO for the

current year is over US $3 million. There is an urgent need of raising additional funds for meeting the requirement of the community for education and rehabilitation.

We humbly request the members of the community at large to please come forward and give us a helping hand so that the posterity of the Memon Community can bear the fruits of your generosity.

WMO Audited AccountsWe are pleased to inform you that the

accounts of WMO for the year ended 31st December 2012 are presented herewith for your review and approval.

It may be noted that chapter-wise Accounts of Pakistan, U.K. and Middle East have been audited by local Auditors which have been consolidated. The Audited Accounts of Far East and Africa Chapters are also presented herewith.Annual Report 2012 17

Honourable Chairman and the Trustees of World Memon Organization Charitable Foundation, it is my pleasure to submit the General Secretary’s Report for the year 2012 as we complete 10 years of Service to Humanity under the banner of World Memon Organization (WMO).

WMO was formed in the year 2002 under a Visionary Leadership of our Founding Members to Unite the Memon’s across the Global and make the community strong in all aspects of life, be it Education, Housing, Commerce, Religion etc. Memon’s for generations have

been a God fearing, Philanthropic community working towards the upliftment and betterment of their community and nation, and this was the founding Ethos of WMO.

Our achievements as we end a decade of service have been reflection of this ethos. Over the last decade the WMO has contributed over US$ 25M in community development work across Education, Housing, Self Employment, Medical etc. However there is much to be done. There are over thousands of our Memon Brothers and Sisters in India, Pakistan and parts of Asia and Africa who do not have a roof over their head, don’t get a decent meal a day, have no access to education and live in abject poverty crying for our support and prayers. As we gather for our 11th AGM in the City of our founding,

Dubai it is time to reflect on these issues as we step into our 2nd decade of service to Humanity

MeetingsThe 9th and the 10th AGM’s of the

Foundations was held on 21st and 23rd of June 2012 respectively at the Memon Centre, Balham, London hosted by the WMO Europe Chapter. In addition to the AGM, 2 meetings of the Board of Trustees were held during the same time in London.

Amendments to the Articles of Association and the Standing Orders of the Foundation were approved and adopted at the 9th AGM.

Thereafter a new Board of Management of the Foundation consisting of the following Members were appointed at the 10th AGM for a 2 year period

A total of US$ $ 2,432,000 was disbursed during 2012 and 2013 across Education, Housing, and Women up liftment, etc. A detail disbursement of Zakath across chapters/projects is given elsewhere in this Annual Report

The Zakath Commitment of US$ 2,600,000 was made by the Chapters at the 10th AGM for year 2013 and it is hoped we will exceed this target as in the year 2012

Trustees2 New Trustees joined the Foundation

in 2013 and I warmly welcome them, namely Mr Arif Habib of Pakistan and Mr Yunus Sulaiman of South Africa. With their inclusion we have a total of 53 Trustees of whom 24 have paid their fees in full. The timely payment of Trustee Fee has been a concern in the past few years and it is hoped the Trustees will make all attempts to regularize their Fee’s and help to strengthen the finances of the foundation.

The majority of the Trustee Fee usage has now been reconciled and with this another long pending issue has been resolved

InvestmentsThe Buy Back Agreement with ARY

has been finally resolved and we are in possession of 12 out of 16 shops. The possession of the balance 4 shops will be given to us in the near future, however we are receiving the rental income from all 16 shops.

The rental income from the 11 Apartments in Dubai has also been

    regularised.The ownership/procession of the

3 Apartments gifted to the WMO by Mr Mohamed Anwer Chawdhry of Bangladesh was finalized during the early part of 2013.

I am happy to state the Foundation is earning an income of over AED 50,000 a month from all our combined Real Estate investments in Dubai, UAE

Since reaching the agreement with ARY Group to transfer the 16 Shops to WMO CF in lieu of the Buy Back Agreements, the property prices in Dubai have appreciated considerably and at current market value, the 16 shops valuation has appreciated by over 30%

FinanceWith the resolution of the Buy Back

Agreement and the improved income from the investments the overall financial situation of the foundation has improved considerably.

The Audited Accounts for 2012 have been audited and are presented at the AGM for confirmation.

However the Audited Accounts do not reflect all the funds laying in credit of the foundation in Africa Chapter, Far East Chapter, Middle East Chapter and Pakistan Chapter and it is hoped this anomaly will be corrected before the 2013 Audit is completed.

Any other MattersThe performance of the WMO

Chapters has seen much improvements and it is hoped this positive trend will continue in the future. The Ladies Wing has been

active with “Memon Connection” and the Youth Wing was launched in Sri Lanka in February 2013.

A matter which has been of concern in the recent past has been the Governance and Performance of the WMO and in order to address this issue, a Governance Committee was appointed in February 2013.

Their findings and recommendations are included as a separate item on the agenda for consideration and suitable decision to be taken for the future betterment of the organization.

Our beloved Founder President Haji Abdul Razak has been aligning for quite some time and our Dua’s and prayers go for his speedy recovery

My sincere appreciation to our Chairman Mr Sulaiman Noormohamed (Solly Noor) and WMO President Mr Abdul Satar Dada for their support and guidance and all others Office bearers and members of the extended WMO family for their support and encouragement to carry out my duties

2,150,000 and I am happy to state the actual collection was US$ 2,460,000/, 12% above the target. Of the 5 chapters 4 chapters

fulfilled their commitment in full and it is hoped in future the other chapter will also meet their commitment in full

    The BeginningThe World Memon Organisation

(WMO) has numerous welfare projects and also promotes socio-cultural activities among the Memon women and youth. For this purpose, the WMO has established Ladies Wing and Youth Wings in each of its eight chapters.

Recently, an International Youth Conference (IYC) was held during February 2013 in Colombo, Sri Lanka, with the aim of bringing the youth of the Memon Community on a single platform. At the IYC, it was decided to form an International Youth Wing (IYW). Mr. Arsalan Arif Nara from Pakistan Chapter was nominated as the first ever Chairman of the IYW.

Initially, the team consisted of eight members including the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of WMO, but now as per the charter, the number of members have increased to twelve including the COO of

WMO. The Chairman and his team were

given the task to develop a youth charter to chalk out a way forward for the Memon youth from around the world.

Regular tele-conferences were held from time to time in this regard. After which, a youth charter was developed for presentation in the Meeting of the International Youth Wing at J. W. Marriot, Dubai on Saturday, 16th November 2013. The members of the youth wing unanimously approved the charter for its final presentation at the Board of Management (BOM) of WMO meeting scheduled to held on 17th November 2013 at the same venue.

the Youth Wing of Middle East Chapter and sponsored by the WMO. The event started with group forming with random nationalities. Each group was given one topic for discussion, the member after brainstorming among the group members came up with a detailed answer. The star of the night was Mr. Altaf Vayani, sang a song in Memoni to portray the need to keep the Memoni language alive.

The discussion ended with all groups sharing their views, followed by a dinner. This networking dinner gave the opportunity to youth in the community to make new friends and come together as one group for service under the newly formulated wing of WMO.

Nasserpuria Memon Jamaat, Canada (NMJ Canada) organized a two days annual festival on 6th and 7th July 2013 in Pleasentville Community Centre in the town of Scarborough, Ontario. Participants from different parts of Ontario Province attended with their family members including children. As is the tradition, the two days festival started with a recitation from the Holy Quran and by remembering and thanking Allah (S.W.T.) by young Mohamed Moledina Varwani. The Master of Ceremony for the evening was Brother Zulfikar Hathiyani, a past President who welcomed all including invited guests such as President of Memon Association of Canada, Brother Ismail Mirza, Brother Faisal Motiwala and Dr Mohamed Taher from Memon Matrimony. He emphasized that along with organizing functions on a monthly basis, it was important to have a festival, where our community and the larger Memon community could meet and work together for the common cause. Brother Zulfikar Hathiyani acknowledged that collaboration with other communities

was NMJ Canada’s strategy from the very beginning.

    A presentation on www.memonshaadi.

ca by Dr. Mohamed Taher and Brother Abdul Hamid Hathiyani elaborated the need for uniting Memons worldwide through matrimonial services. Dr. Taher identified that there were almost I million Memons spread all over the world. Memons have a rich culture and heritage and if we did not work together, there was a threat that we can start losing our language, culture and eventually our religion. It was therefore paramount that efforts need to be made for all Memons to keep their traditions and Memon Shadi Matrimonial Services was just a small step in that direction. They emphasized that as Memons are spread worldwide, the use of traditional matchmaking was becoming elusive and newer ways of matchmaking needed to be established. Memon Shadi is an effort that intends to unite Memon hearts worldwide.

    Another important event during the

evening was the re-launch of the web site of NMJ Canada i.e. www.nmjcanada.com website by elder Abdul Kader Yakub and Ghulam Habib Yakub. The new website was designed and developed by two youth Hamza Varwani and Irum Macci under the guidance of past president Brother Zahir Salyani.

Chinese dinner was served and as is the

tradition, “Bismillah” was recited before start of the dinner by another past President
