January 28, 2017 – University of Houston-Victoria

The trip to UHV was a great experience for me. They showed us how they greet new people coming into UHV during their first year. They have a big event where they invite students and their parents to campus for fun and games. They even showed us how to ask for a recording of the day you missed in class so you will not be behind in learning. Our tour guides showed us the dorm room, which were either a four bedroom, two, or 1 bedroom. I learned that the 1 bedrooms cost more. The trip to UHV was fun and I learned a lot. Glad I signed up to attend. -Michael M. from Eisenhower High School

February 18-19, 2017 - Spring Overnight

My experience on the Stephen F. Austin State University & University of Texas at Tyler trip

with Upward Bound was amazing. The tour on campus had many booths willing to answer any

question I threw at them. Taking the trip to Stephen F. Austin made me realize other

opportunities that are out there. Both Universities had stunning and alluring campuses. Due to

this trip, I was able to find my second option for college, which is Stephen F. Austin.

February 25, 2017 - Money Matters

March 4, 2017 - RodeoRun Volunteering

Money Matters walked us through planning a prom budget where the sky was the limit and we also played FIFA soccer based on financial aid questions. It was an event where both students and parents had a chance to learn something new related to managing money. In my first experience, I learned which loans are the most convenient for students pursuing a higher education. My mom was also given valuable information that she will use in her near future with my younger siblings when they get ready for college. At the closing of the event, we had lunch while we listed to TRIO alumni who gave us a better look of how TRIO plays an important part in our future and present. The Money Matters event is one that you don't want to miss...well, if you want to be well informed about money for your future! This Money Matters was a success like every year! – Ana R. from Nimitz High School

The Rodeo Run is a volunteer event where students and I set up the water area and distributed cups of water to all event participants. I enjoyed working with other UB members as we all helped out with our assigned tasks. For example, everyone had 5-6 volunteers in their groups. Two passed out water to participants, two others poured water in the cups, and lastly, the two others assisted in putting cups on the table. I take pleasure in the way every one of the volunteers collaborated with each other to help the event be successful as well as the ability to familiarize ourselves with the community and its members. – Leslie C. from Aldine High School

April 22, 2017 – Texas A&M and Blinn College

April 28-29, 2017 - Leadership Overnight at Camp Allen

I really enjoyed the Texas A&M trip, the tour guides were

awesome. They showed us the traditions that they have for

each class with greeting others and speaking as a guest.

Texas A&M has several cords around the campus that are

mounted in the ground and there is a myth that if you ever

step on any of them it will bring you nothing but bad luck.

Also they have an old trees that has been there for several

years and if anyone walks under there you will be lonely for

life. Overall, I learned many things at Texas A&M and it’s a

great school to be at. -Jamiyah M. from Eisenhower High

School

StrengthsQuest at Camp Allen was a very positive and endearing event. It provided me the opportunity

to socialize with numerous people my age, and it allowed me the chance to get to know people on a

deeper level. In addition, I learned a lot about myself, and as a result, I am more accepting of who I am.

Had I not taken that StrengthsQuest test nor had I not taken such a glorious trip, I would be completely

oblivious to my strengths and weaknesses. StrengthsQuest at Camp Allen assisted me with my leader-

ship skills, as well as my collaboration skills; I couldn’t be appreciative enough for having gone on this

trip." --Jo'Tavia N. from MacArthur High School

May 13, 2017 - Camp Allen

I had a great time at Camp Allen. I also had a great time talking to everybody, making new friends, and doing the activities as well. One activity I think we all loved doing was canoeing, even though two boats fell over into the water. I feel like if I had never went on the obstacle course [high ropes] and the zip lining I would have missed out on a great opportunity. It was a really fun experience for me and I will never forget that day at Camp Allen. - Emily B. from Aldine 9th Grade
