Bug-A-Paluza is just days away. Are we ready ? I don't feellike I am but I always feel like we're not ready when the bigday finally arrives.

What have we forgotten to do and prepare for? Theseand more questions keep going through my head as the deadline inches closer.I'm disappointed in some aspects and thrilled about others but everything willcome together as it always does.

We have received phone calls and emails from a lot of folks who saw newsof our big event in Hot VWs Magazine, which was one of our areas of advertis-ing. Our advertising efforts have increased this year it seemsto be paying off. Pre-registrations have been received from Florida, Mississippi,Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, as well as receiving many from within 150miles of us in what we think of as "the local area". Several calls have beenreceived from "the local area" from people who didn't know anything about theshow until they saw it advertised in Hot VWs. If you step back and look at Bug-A-Paluza look where we, the members of Scenic City Volks Folks, have broughtthis event in just a few short years. Our festival is one of the youngest majorshows on the car show schedule and it has become "major" just because weworked hard and wanted to present a great, quality show. One, where peoplewould talk about "how great" it was for weeks and months after the show. Ourpopularity rests on the shoulders of our members and our guests, our partici-pants and our sponsors.Without these groups, Bug-A-Paluza would be nothing.

In a time of trouble and strife, thank goodness for something as good as Bug-A-Paluza has turned out to be.

Until next month, slow down just a little bit, take a side road and enjoy the viewfrom inside a Volkswagen. I sincerely believe we see things differently.

The Volkswagen Iltis1 was developed byAudi for Volkswagen in the 1970s as areplacement to the VW Type 181 and 182(Thing,Trekker, Kubelwagen etc). The Iltiswas designed using components of theAudi Fox (Audi 80 in Europe),VolkswagenRabbit (Golf I) and the Type I (Beetle)along with an updated Auto Union Mungafour wheel drive system that would laterbe go on to be reworked into the AudiQuattro system. The four wheel drivesystem was designed to be competentboth on and off-road and enable the Iltisto carry a 500kg (1100lb) pay load crosscountry and climb grades of up to 60.9degrees.

The Iltis was first produced for theGerman Army starting in 1978 and in lim-ited quantities for the civilian market soonafter. In 1983 the Canadian Governmentbought the rights and the tooling to man-ufacture the Iltis from Volkswagen andBombardier produced 6000 units for theCanadian Army in 1984 and 1985.Production moved back to Europe in 1987where a final run was made for theGerman and Belgium armys. Productionof the Iltis stopped in 1988.

The Iltis features a user selectable twowheel / four wheel drive system with a

locking rear differential- some latemode l shad af r o n tl o c k -i n gdifferen-tial as well.A perma-nent four pointroll cage. Fourremovable doors. Aretractable and / orremovable canvas roof. Afold down windscreen. Rifle, fuel can andspare tire holders. Waterproof storagebins on top of each fender in the enginebay. Water and RFI2 proof ignition sys-tem. The intake and exhaust systemswere designed for deep water fording andthere is enough room to put a freight pal-let in the rear with the seats folded for-ward.

Two engines were available in the Iltis.Most Iltis have a 1714cc (79.5 x 86.4mm -8.2:1 compression ratio) water-cooledengine produces 55kW (75hp) @5000rpm and 138Nm (100ft/lbs) of torqueat 2800rpm - this engine is very similar to

the 1.7L Rabbit engine and most of theparts are interchangeable. The engine isfueled by a Solex 1B1 carburetor with anelectric fuel pump and requires regular (87Octane) gasoline in the 85L fuel tank. Anaddition 20L of fuel can be stored in theNATO spec fuel can holder on the rear.Fuel consumption is approximately12L/100km for a cruising range of 700 km.In the last two years of production a 1.6LTurbo Diesel motor was available thatproduced 51kW (69hp) @ 4500rpm and132Nm (98ft/lbs) @ 2500rpm.

The '005' Iltis transmission is based onthe 1970s Audi 80 and Audi LS100 gear-boxes that has full time output to the rearwheels. The final drive of this transmission

Sometimes I feel like Rodney Dangerfieldbecause I don’t get no respect - from myfamily. I’ll tell you what I mean.

Both of my daughters-in-law are going tobe blessing us with grandchildren later thisyear. One recent evening we were all gath-ered for an enjoyable dinner at our localPizza Hut and of course the talk wasimmediately of babies and decoratingthemes for the baby rooms. I guess thatwhen the subject of babies are discussedit’s just not a good time for the men tointerject their thoughts and opinions.

“What theme are you going to use whenyou decorate the babies room?” someoneasks.

Suddenly the table is abuzz with answersand ideas. Everyone has an opinion andideas are thrown about like a loose oil capin your engine compartment.

“What about a Pooh theme?” says one.“Or clowns!” says another.“Butterflies!” “Sailboats!” “Nemo!”

“Disney!”At this point I pipe up and say what I

think would be a great themefor a babies room - “Howabout Volkswagens?”

The resulting sudden silencewas abrupt as all eyes turnedtoward me, then in unison rolled away andthe cacophony of ideas and thoughts con-tinue as though I had not spoken. Thankgoodness I didn’t say Teletubbies!

“I’m serious,” I say trying to recover fromthe snub, “the new Herbie movie comesout this summer and...” but it is too lateand the message is clear - Pop (that’s me)and his Volkswagens are not an appropri-ate subject for this conversation.

No respect! When the subject of names for the

babies comes up I have enough sense tokeep my mouth shut but in my mind I runthrough a couple of possibilities - Herbie,Porsche, hmm, I wonder what the girlswould do if I just started calling the babyby a nickname like ‘bugzy!’

The talk at the table turns to colors forthe baby rooms but before I can open mymouth someone I won’t name looks at me

and says “No orange!”“What’s wrong with orange?” I ask,

knowing full well that it represents myother great passion and both my daughter-in-laws are fans of other teams colors.

“No.” is the simple answer I get alongwith an evil eye.

No respect!I suppose I’ll just have to wait until the

babies get here to begin indoctrinatingthem about the joys and wonders ofVolkswagens and Tennessee Volunteerswith toys, clothing and riding in orangebugs!

by Travis Barefoot

As far as I'm concerned, Dr. Jekyll and Mr.Hyde have nothing on me. Remember Sybil, the woman with umpteen-million personali-ties? Amateur. Even Princess Fiona (FairMaiden by day, Ugly Ogre by night) couldlearn a thing or two by watching me. I'm notsaying that I'm psychotic, under a spell, orthink that I am several people in one body, but I do notice a difference in attitude anddriving style when I sit in the driver's seat andtake off in one of my Volkswagens.

I've always said that I love to drive mybuses. They're not the fastest of vehicles onthe road nor will they win any points ontakeoff. They're slow, lumbering beasts thatlean away in the turns and are victim to thegusts of wind on the busy highways. Theyhave this laid-back, easygoing, I-don't-careattitude that surrounds it like an aura. Andwhen I get inside, the attitude is somehowconnected to the cortex of my brain (orsomewhere lower down), resulting in achange of mood to match the one ofwhichever bus I am in. Sweetpea is mycamper, and she has this feeling of being athome while on the road. I don't have adesire to go fast (even though she can gosomewhat fast), or be too impatient forthose slower than myself. It's as if I take on

the characteristics of the SeniorCitizen. I'm in an old vehicle andI'm slow. I know that. If youdon't like it, just go ahead andpass me.

In going from Sweetpea toOscar, the transformation is sub-tle.Since they are both creaturesfrom the same mold, there's notmuch need for an attitudeadjustment. There is one differ-ence though.the desire to gofaster is stronger. The personali-ty that takes over in Oscar is theone I call Sleeper. He may lookun-intimidating from the out-side, but the inside is full of sur-prises. Oscar is still a little slowon the take-off, but he can holdhis own on the interstate. Manytimes I have found myself push-ing down harder on the acceler-ator without knowing that I wasdong so.That's when the SeniorCitizen crawls up from the hid-den places in my mind to slow myself down. Some people though, think that since it is abus, it has to be slow and stupid. So they dodumb things like pull out in front of me, cutback in front of me while being only inchesahead,or just riding on my posterior so close

that they appear tohave no headlights. When things like thathappen, the next per-sona (usuallyreserved for theGolf) peeps his headup. Now the Golf turns

me into someoneelse entirely. Theneed for speed takesover and The Raceremerges.Too bad forthose who are slow-er than me. I gotplaces I got to be.The corners areshorter and thestraight-aways areracing lanes. I can'tget to where I needto go quick enough. Ihave to see who Ican jump ahead of atthe red light, whichcar I can beat by tak-ing the shortcut, andhow long it takes meto get there thistime. I'm surprisedthat my seat pockets(no glove box, go fig-ure!) aren't filledwithsummons to appearin court for recklessdriving and speeding

violations. The Passat is Mama's car, but when I'm

able to drive it, that's when Moneybagstakes over. Driving it makes me feel like mypockets are lined with gold. The urge to pullup to a Rolls Royce and ask for a certainbrand-name yellow colored sandwichcondiment is overwhelming. Look at thoselesser vehicles; I feel sorry for those in theirCadillacs, BMWs and Mercedes.sorry saps. All hail the passing Passat! My car is betterthan yours and I have the receipts for thou-sands of dollars of VW work repairs toprove it. So, there! Since the Passat has the1.8 liter turbo engine, Moneybags some-times feels a tap on the shoulder.Who doeshe see in the back seat through the rear-view mirror? None other than The Racer, urging him to "punch it a little".And "punchit" he does.

OK, so maybe I don't actually have psy-chotic delusions of being these other people. But there is a little truth to it. I know that Iget different feelings and that those feelingflow over into me.And I know that the per-sonalities in each vehicle are different fromeach other as night is to day.But they all haveone thing in common. They each have thisability to transform me into the personalitiesthat I envision each separate vehicle having. There is this connection that pluginto.whether it's in the seat, in the steeringwheel, in the headrest, or just in my head, Idon't know. How else would all these char-acteristics emerge? I've looked for portalsand connectors, but am unable to find any.Am I crazy? I hope not. I just know that theconnection is there. It's undeniable.

Well, it is time that I left. I have a few errandsto run and they can't wait any longer. I don'tknow which set of keys I will grab from thedesk drawer, but I sure am anxious to seewho I will be today. Let's go see.

Till later, GoBusGo!

By Candace JaynesI had an epiphany. My van runs better

when it has gas. Yeah, yeah, no kidding, right? I mean she runs better when herbelly's full. When it gets down close to thebig, ominous red block on the gas guage, she gets cranky...or not. I thought thatwas the problem recently when my vaninitiated an official protest to crank.

I had driven to UTC one morning, asusual. No problem. I parked in one of thecentrally located lots on campus. Afterclasses, life was good because I managedto finish in the physics lab 30 minutesearly. I pretty well skipped to my vanwhile noticing what a beautiful day it was.I turned the key. Now, if you put your lipstogether softly and blow, that's what itsounded like - perfect for a VW, right? Theproblem was that it was very temporary. It would crank, but it immediately died.Would NOT stay started. And I noticedpushing the gas pedal had no effect what-soever.

Hmmmmm....Here we go. My first aban-donment. At least with this van. Nowthere simply could not be too much go

wrong with this engine because it is prac-tically brand new. Has only about 5,000miles on it. I figured in my vast VW wis-dom that since the gas pedal was nowonly an ornament, it probably had some-thing to do with the gas flow. I went andopened the engine compartment.Honestly, if something were wrong, theproblem part would have had to wave abig flashing neon sign. I didn't see a neonsign.

So I called my aforementioned handy-dandy VW mechanic and told him of mydilemma. He said to sit tight, and he'd bethere. It dawned on me at that point I bet-ter get used to hearing that - sit tight. It'sjust inevitable.

Anyway, I knew my valiant knight hadarrived when I spotted - yup, a cute littlepastel-colored bug puttering toward cam-pus. I soon found myself crouched behindmy van's hiney yet again, next to my wisemechanic. This time I kept my mouth shutand just let him work his magic.

He spotted the problem right away -without a neon sign. He said there was a6-inch section of the gas line missing and

it had not fallen intothe compartment. Itwas GONE! We bothknew it could nothave fallen onto theroad on my way toschool for two rea-sons: There was noway for it to get tothe road, and even ifit were physicallypossible, the vanwould have died rightthere on the road. Sohe informed me ofterrible news.Someone had stolenit! Maybe I'm naive, but I was shocked.Really. I never imag-ined someone wouldsteal a piece out ofmy engine. Now I sayengine, but I'm talkingabout anythingbehind that littledoor that enables meto GO. That's theengine.

The mechanicmanaged to scroungearound in the bug tofind a few odd parts

and piece together a replacement thatwould at least get me to his shop.

And so it was. I was able to get to theshop and there, he made his creation per-manent.The actual part would have to beordered but he said I would be fine withthe one he built.

While he was working on it at the shop,I was pacing and somewhat nervous causeI was broke! I was prepared to get out thetin can and go a beggin' to pay this goodman. When I asked him how much I needto come up with, he said not to worryabout it. Wow! Talk about gratitude! Ithanked him profusely and promisedsome form of meager payment ASAP.

Life was good again. I decided that Icould trade talent with him. He expertlyfixed my van and I make some darnyummy cookies! So I went home andbaked a triple recipe of my best cookies, still euphoric in the hope of the humanrace. The next day I took him a big pile ofthem and hoped my gratitude was real-ized.

Now, I can't say I'm grateful for thieves.BUT I do realize that had that not hap-pened, I would not have experienced that... love. No, dude wasn't kissing on me. Buthe GAVE out of the goodness of his heartand I GAVE out of gratitude for that.Thatis love to me.

What I heard out of the corner of myear...I say to the thieves of the world -screw off! The negativity you proliferatewill not reign, especially if it involves a VW.

Editors Note:This article was originally intended to bepublished in our December newsletter, but with thedemise of my computer at that time it and thenewsletter did not get published then. By the wayCandace, I talked to your mechanic and he said notto wait til something goes wrong to bring him morecookies!

Engine SizesOff The Boards...Engine Sizes For Split Windows

BugzWhat size engines did thesplit window busses have? Will a 1600 upright fit in asplit window bus?

Ret.BugTechAll buses had split win-dows thu-67 (USA) 25hpthu `54 (I think) 36hp `55thu-`59 , The `60 had a

36hp that looked like a`40 hp. Bastardengine I think everyone like to call it.Know as the " Campaigner" by dealertechs or" re-inforced 36hp" by VW AG.40hp thu `63 with a 50 hp(1500cc)option in the last half of `63 .53hp (1500cc) `64 thu `67. 57hp(1600cc)`68 thu`70 . ` 60hp(1600cc) dual port `71 only. After that the infa-mous type 4 made its present know To answer you question. Physically a1600cc will fit right in a `63 thu `67 split, but keep in mind that although the `63-`66 1500cc had a bigger flywheelw/200mm clutch, it still was 6 volt andthe flywheel had less starter ring teeth.`67 thu 71 flywheels were the same sizeand 12 volt with more teeth w/200mmclutch. There is a few other mods youwould have to make depending on whichyear splitty you are dealing with. Nothingserious, maybe a pressure plate.Whew!!!

ZenHomer is on his 3rdengine.The first two were1600 single ports and theone in it now is a dual port. The first one was thrown

together out of junk parts . . . got 15,000miles out of it without missing a lickbefore it spit a rod cap out the top of theblock. The second one was a used enginethat I bought from Lamar . . . he had pulledit out of his Super Beetle 'cause it wasgetting a little "tired." That one lastedabout 10,000 miles before it dropped anexhaust valve head through the top of apiston . . . that "might" have had somethingto do with the 150 mile trip stuck in 4thgear. Anyway, I replaced it with the onlything avalible (affordable) at the time.This1600 dual port is still in it and if I'm notmistaken, is approaching the 30,000 milemark.

From that you might think a dual port isthe way to go . . . but this engine has neverhad near the low end torque that eitherof those single ports had. Driving a bus Iwould trade a little top end power for alot more low end torque any day of theweek. Perhaps there was a reason VWonly installed dual ports in buses for oneyear.

Timing Mark on ‘79 Westy

GoBusGoI have recently replaced thepoints and condensor onmy Westy with the

Compufire electronic ignigtion system(since it has worked so well on my '78 ).Don't worry, you bone-stockers...I willcarry around a new set of points andcondensor in the camper...just in case.I set the timing statically in order to startthe engine so I could then time it with astrobe timing light. When I put the lightto the timing mark, I couldn't see it. So Ire-lined up the timing mark on the fanwith the mark on the indicator (with therotor about to fire on #1). I made surethe mark on the fan was the correct oneand tried to time it with the timing lightagain. I still could not see the mark on thefan! I checked again to make sure that thetiming mark on the fan was the onlymark...no scratches or gouges mis-inter-preted as a timing mark this time, David! So I re-did what I just described, scrapedaway the White Out on the mark on thefan, re-painted it with the White Out, andtried to time it again. I STILL COULDNOT SEE THE MARK! Just out of curios-ity, I moved the strobing light around thefan to see if I could see the mark else-where on the fan.Sure enough, there it was, about 180degrees from where it shoud be.Whassup wit dat? The distributor cannotbe inserted wrong, the vaccuum advanceflapper housing makes sure of that...aswell as the offset gear at the bottom ofthe distributor. So, I am only assuminghere, that since there are no other markson the fan, and I am using the correctone, and the timing marks line up whenthe rotor is about to fire on #1 cylinder, and the engine runs great...is the timinggear set in the case 180 degrees off?

I'venever messed with that gear, but I havehad a loose distributor clamp allow thedistributor to dis-engage from the drive(resulting in no spin on the rotor = nospark) but surely not enough to let the

gear jump up and set itself to a good 180degrees off.Ideas anyone?

AnthonyWell, only speaking fromexperience, I had a type 1engine that was the sameway. It was a rebuilt engine

from ??? that had never been installed.

Well, for most of us dubbers, this is the start of the best part of theyear as we look forward to Bug-A-Palüza 7 and the rest of theVolkswagen shows that we will or plan to attend.A lot of preparationhas gone on and will continue to go on for Bug-A-Palüza 7 right up tilthe start of the show. This years’ show should be a great one and theensuing show season holds a lot of promise for fun and good times forthose who attend.

One thing I’ve noticed over the past several months is the gradualincrease in our club membership. Many thanks go out to Herb, Zen,Kyle, Fielding, the Godfather and so many others for being such goodambassadors for our hobby and passion and the encouragement thesegood folks give to the “newbies.” It seems there is a new name on ouronline forum (www.volksfolks.org) almost every week. Please encour-age these and others you know of to come and join our club.As Bug-A-Palüza gets bigger each year we really need more members to drawon for helping in the planning and execution of our great event.
