The Class of 1947 held their 62nd Reunion on Saturday, September 26, 2009, at the Sandusky Yacht Club with many Ohioansattending, as well as residents of Arizona, California, Maryland, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. Johnny Rhonehouse (1978)was the DJ and Marilyn (Mears) Borden took her turn at the mike for some karaoke. A small group of classmates led the Alma Mater.Frank Valli was the fine MC and Paul Garlock used his gift of prayer to remember all classmates who have passed away. Sundaymorning was spent at a breakfast buffet at the American Legion. It was agreed that we all were glad to have the opportunity tobe together. Committee members were Beverly (Harbrecht) Byington, Paula (DeCaro) Cunningham, Margaret (Hoyer) Wesler, Jean(Hottman) Karbler and Pat (Ryan) Camella.

The S.H.S.Class of 1949 celebrated their 60 year Reunion with 3 days of festivities October 16, 17, 18. Excited, delighted andreunited was how we all felt as 87 people gathered together on Friday, our “Welcome” night, at Lakefield Manor Pavilion. It wasa casual get-together to enjoy renewing old friendships. Given our ages, we were provided badges with names big enough thataging eyes could read them at a glance. (Nothing is more embarrassing than staring at a man’s, or especially a woman’s, chestbefore looking at their face to say “hello”). We shared great food and greater memories with one another from those days oh-so-long ago.

On Saturday morning Mr. Toney, the Principal of Adams Jr. High School, opened the school doors and gave us the opportunityto walk the now hallowed halls of what was our old High School, looking for our old homerooms, lockers, but mostly for thosetreasured memories of our youth... now 60 plus years ago. 87 people (the same number, although not all the same people) attendedthe Saturday night dinner/dance at the Sandusky Yacht Club. The dynamic duo of Gary Spayd and Tony Spalla (still our loveableclass clowns) entertained us with a friendly banter of nostalgia and sharing before we sat down to enjoy a delicious meal – afterwhich OUR kind of music was played by the Frank Fosco Trio. Some enjoyed dancing, but more enjoyed just milling around talkingto as many “old” classmates as possible.

BIG “Get Well” cards were provided for each classmate too ill to attend. Those in attendance were given the opportunity tosign and write an encouraging message on them. The cards, along with each of the reunion mementos, will be mailed to thoseclassmates. A 50-50 raffle was held where the winner split the “pot” with the SHS Class of 1949 Reunion Fund as “seed” money. As each classmate passes, he/she is memorialized with a donation in their name to the SHS Alumni Association Scholarship Fund.

On Sunday morning a scrumptious buffet was waiting for us at the Yacht Club. That provided us the opportunity to say long, fond “good-byes” to all our classmates before heading back to our homes with a whole new set of wonderful memories -- ‘til wemeet again.’

On a personal note, my work as a member of the reunion committee has been extremely rewarding. Rarely has so much workbeen so much fun and produced such positive results. I feel very lucky indeed to have had a chance to bond with some classmatesand re-bond with others in a way I never had many decades ago. KUDOS to our Reunion Chairwoman Joyce (Baker) Mulaney. Sheis the one responsible for making this event possible! Without her hard work and dedication, this would never have happened.MANY, MANY, MANY “THANKS!!!”

Sincerely, Pat (Cline) Stout ... (Proud member of the SHS Class of 1949)[email protected]

SPORTSSHS-Fremont Ross Games to ContinueFrom the Sandusky RegisterSandusky still plans to maintain its historic rivalry with FremontRoss, SHS Director of Athletics, Susan Sackett said Tuesdayafter the Little Giants were accepted to the Toledo City League.“We’ll always have them on the schedule,” And that holds truefor all sports, not just football.

This year’s gridiron contest, which took place Oct. 30 atStrobel Field, was selected as part of the Great American Rivalryseries. Only four other games in Ohio and 32 teams across thecountry were chosen for this distinction by iHigh Marketing.

Once Sandusky moves into the Northern Ohio League for the2011-12 season, the game mill move from the last game of theseason to the first.

We already have them scheduled for 2011-2012 on Week 1,”Sackett said. “It worked for both schools when we were trying tolook ahead.

“you can build up hype at the beginning (of the season) oryou can build it up in the end.”

IHigh Marketing will award $500.00 scholarships to aSandusky and Ross senior football player with the highest GPA,

and will induct a former player from each team into its Hall ofFame.

The winner of the game received a Great American RivalrySeries trophy.

Sandusky was interested in remaining in the same leaguewith Ross, and school officials publicly stated at boardmeetings their hopes of bringing the Little Giants with them tothe NOL.

Both teams have been part of the Greater BuckeyeConference since 2003, though the league is rapidly losingmembers. While the Toledo City League will welcome FremontRoss, it denied admission to two other GBC schools - Findlayand Lima Senior.

Sackett said she was open to the idea of keeping someteams in the GBC, depending on the sport.

There is a possibility Sandusky could face Ross andPerkins in the first two weeks of the football season, thoughthe Sandusky-Perkins game was initially a two-year contract.
