Next Chapter Book Club (NCBC) is a community-based literacy and social program for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. NCBC includes participants with a wide range of reading skills and abilities. Club members gather with two facilitators—Amy from LCL and Lauren, a NCBC

member—at the Downtown Newark Library to read aloud and discuss a book for one hour, twice a month. The group typically has ten to twelve participants and often a therapy dog through Therapy Dogs International named Sammy and his handler, Tara. Most participants come from local groups including PALS (Physical Activity and Life Skills) and Chrysalis Health Company.

Together, NCBC members choose the books they want to read and how they would like the club structured. To wrap up their reading time, the group enjoys playing Apples to Apples or playing drawing games that related to the book being read. NCBC members read adapted classic novels (i.e. Little Women and Treasure Island), as well as current, popular literature; furthermore, they love books, learning and reading together. When asked to share thoughts about the club, members shared the following: Lauren says, “I enjoy it, because it helps with reading skills. I like the library staff; they help us to find books and how to pronounce words.” Michael proclaims, “I like to read chapter books.” Jared expresses, “I like talking…especially times when we talk about John Cena” (as Jared is a big fan of wrestling, we read John Cena’s book, Elbow Grease). Adam, Cory, Jared, and Kailey are six-year members, who have attended almost every meeting.

NCBC meets in the Teen Zone monthly on the first and third Tuesday from 12:30-1:30pm. If you, or someone you know, would benefit from this group, please join. Some of the titles on NCBC’s “Completed Reading List” include: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes; Batman Vol. 1: The Court of Owls (a graphic novel); Grimm’s Fairy Tales; Lucky Dogs; Lost Hats; Dating Don’ts: Hi-Lo Stories about Real Life; The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde; The Swiss Family Robinson; and War of the Worlds. Shaking things up from time to time like having an Iditarod Trail musher and sled dog join NCBC while reading The Call of the Wild (unabridged) and White Fang (unabridged) help keep regulars eager and encourage new members to join. Celebrating the completion of reading some titles by watching the film version and enjoying popcorn is an occasional twist. No matter what is being read, everyone has a great time and enjoys being at the Library!

Convenient 24-Hour Library Kiosks For You!

The image to the right, with State Senator Jay Hottinger and his family, commemorates the May 21, 2000 grand opening of our current library building. The Hottingers placed a time capsule in the ceremonial installation of the cornerstone to mark the event. On February 2, 2020, the Licking County Library celebrates twenty years of residence at 101 West Main Street in Newark. After fifty years at the Church Street facility and a successful bond campaign, the Library finally had a space in which it could grow and meet the expanding needs of its community. Twenty years later, LCL’s dedication to serving its community of lifelong learners is stronger than ever.

Celebrating 20 Years
