A huge “thank you” goes out to the KC Region members who instructed the Street Survival school held on April 23rd.

Started several years ago, the street survival school is dedicated to teaching young drivers the skills necessary for becoming responsible drivers. These instructors volunteer their time and talents to this most worthy cause. Without their commitment this school would not be possible. This year the school was held at the MCC Precision Driving Course in Independence, Missouri.

From the “Secrets of Solo Racing” by Henry A. Watts;

“Don’t get too discouraged in the beginning. There’s a lot to learn. If you want it, you will have it. It just takes time and dedication. Don’t overestimate the differences between machines. Yes, good car preparation is essential, but, until you have some real expertise, more time will be gained by learning to drive than by modifying the car.”

L to R—David Long, Chuck Clark, Matt Rivard, Scott Peterson, Tom Holstrom, Tony Giordano, Shawn Hill, Charlie Smith, Charlie Clark, Bob Bramlage

A Few Words From Joe:

As we move into 2013, we will have our first Officers and Board of Directors meeting on Jan 29th at the American Legion on 75th street. At this first meeting, we will be setting the goals that we will be working on for the upcoming year. I look forward in working with our newly elected Officers and Board of Directors. Exciting times ahead!

Dear Mom:

Update on Alan Bennett. Alan who was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident last October 24th, 2012, attended the Kansas City Region Awards Banquet on January 19th with his wife, Jennifer. Alan is recuperating quite well but still uses a cane to get around with. We were all very glad to see him up and about, and doing so well.

Chuck Davis and Ginger Hendricks flew to Rome, Italy last November. The trip was part of her birthday present. They stayed at a small apartment complex located in the Vatican area. From the apartment it was a 10 minute walk to St. Peters Square and also to a bus stop that they discovered had buses to everywhere they wanted to go. The second day of their visit they went to the Vatican museum and the incredibly beautiful Sistine Chapel. Chuck said you would have never known that the official tourist season was over, as there were people and more people everywhere. While in the chapel Chuck ask Ginger to marry him, to which she said “Yes”! They have not set a date for the wedding yet but have talked about October. Ginger was wearing a beautiful diamond at the Awards Banquet. Congratulations to both of you.

Dodie Rinke flew to Pennsylvania on December 16th to spend time with Bill and Dodie’s daughter, Mary. Then Bill drove out the first of January to pick her up but he said they will most likely stay out there for awhile before returning home.

Brittney Williams and Bryce Guthrie flew back to Kansas City to celebrate Christmas and New Years with their families. Brittney went shopping with the “Williams Girls” one day, they attended a dinner at her Uncle Keith and Aunt Cheryl Williams’ new home and they were at Grandma and Grandpa Williams for Christmas dinner. They also celebrated with Bryce’s parents and Brittney’s mother. They flew back to Encinitas, California on New Year’s Day.

Dan McConnell helped his mother celebrate her 97th birthday on January 19th. He said he would not be at the Awards Banquet because he would be partying with her.

Chuck Davis will compete in his first event of 2013 at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. Registration for the event opened and closed on January 21st. There are 570 entries. Chuck thinks that has to be an SCCA record. SM & SRF were done by lottery. The Lone Star Region has never done an event of this magnitude, so Chuck thinks it will be interesting.

Our condolence to the Mike & Donna Hill family on the passing December 8th, 2012 of Russell Hill Jr, 87 year old of Olathe, KS and formerly of Leavenworth, KS. Russ was Mike’s Dad, Shawn & Erica’s PawPaw, Jordan, Ethan, Lucas & Collin’s great Grampa. He was an aerial gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress with the 385th Bomber Group of the Army Air Corps from October 1944 to May 1945 in the European Theater of Operations. His aircraft was named “Madam Shoo Shoo”.

Our condolence to the American Legion Post #370 in Overland Park, KS on the death of Timothy (Buck) Bucklin on January 3rd, 2013. Buck had recently retired from the position of Bar Manager and was the gentleman that our RE Joe Tasler met with last year in regards to the Kansas City Region moving their club meetings to the American Legion Hall on 75th Street. Buck had been fighting cancer and passed away in St Louis, MO where his son, daughter-in-law and grandson lived.

Dear Mom: Melanie Ryan McGinley and Edward Charles Dickerson were married at the Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Kansas City, MO on New Year’s Eve. Melanie is the daughter of Mike & Mary McGinley and Edward is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Dickerson of Albuquerque, New Mexico. The bride’s sister, Melissa Smilor served as Matron of Honour and her husband, Matt Smilor was an usher. The bride carried a rosary and linen handkerchief of her late grandmother, Elaine McGinley secured in her bridal bouquet. The reception was at the InterContinental Hotel. The newlyweds are presently at home in Toledo, Ohio. Hayden Smith, grandson of Charlie & Sharlene suffered a broken leg while playing baseball. Hayden lives in Hughes Springs, TX and will be in a cast for 2 months. He missed the first few games this season due to a cracked rib and will now miss the last two games! Chuck & Alex Clark skipped the Midwest Division’s season opener at Hallett to take part in the annual Brew to Brew relay race. This team relay began at Boulevard Brewery in KC and ended near Freestate Brewery in Lawrence, KS. Chuck was the driver and crew person while Alex and the remaining 5 relay team members combined to run 5 legs of the 43 mile race (combined distance for their runs were approx 20 miles). Alex ran the 4.9 mile leg that were right down Kaw Drive in Bonner Springs, just blocks from the Ragan’s house. She said the winds were brutal but they had a blast. The team is now turning their attention to a Fall event and will be entering as a 5 man relay team in the Kansas City Marathon. Alex is also considering a late fall half marathon, but she has not committed to one yet. She is thinking Las Vegas in December with her best friend from high school, Stephanie. Residents in the State Avenue area in Kansas City, KS were recently invited to a public meeting at St Patrick Parish Center at 94th & State. Steve Bachenberg, project manager from BHC Rhodes talked about the details of improvement along State Avenue from 73rd Street to 94th Street at the open house. The residents looked at drawings, talked with engineers and expressed their opinions about the plans. Benjamin Wolf, 16 year old son of Steve & Marsha, now owns his own IT7 race car! It is a white 1985 RX7 Mazda and he was preparing it so he could attend the MAM double drivers school. (Mom didn’t hear if he made it to the school or not). Benjamin is a sophomore at Shawnee Mission West high school and his “everyday wheels” is a blue 1991 Mazda RX7 convertible. Ben is following in the footsteps of his father, Steve and his grandfather, Marvin. Ken Snyder travels by an old cemetery which sits between his house and the school where he works just about every day. Several of the head stones were about to roll down a very steep hill, which is approximately 8 feet tall. One of the markers is an old government issued head stone for a man who served in the Civil War. Until the city cleared the brush off of the hill the marker was nearly invisible from either the cemetery or the road next to it. And it was just about ready to fall down the hill. Ken contacted the city via their website and got no response, then he sent a letter to the Wyandotte Daily News and still no reaction. So Ken contacted Channel 4 Problem Solvers and they sent Ms Wagar and a cameraman out and they did a story on the head stones. Within a week and a half of the story airing, the headstones have been relocated to the “foot” of the graves next to the hillside - they aren’t exactly correct, but they are now stable and no longer pose a hazard to drivers on the street next to the cemetery. Problem solved. Don’t look back………………………
