A Happy Easter

Easter is central to our Christian faith. The foundation of the New Testament is

the statement, “God raised Jesus from the dead.” At the time, this statement was

not only extra-ordinary because it said someone had risen from death, but it was

extra-ordinary because this someone was a Galilean Jewish peasant crucified as

a criminal who deserved capital punishment by the great empire of Rome.

God loved and remained loyal to a “nobody” when both the power of death and the power of

human sin was arrayed against him.

Easter is ultimately central to our Christian faith because it means the resurrected Jesus of

Nazareth, this particular person, is rightly to be understood as Jesus Christ our Lord and

Savior. God has so approved of him that he raised him from the dead to live beyond death and

to live eternally.

There is no doubt Christians love to celebrate Easter. So many come to church Easter morning

for their first and perhaps only time of the year. We sing the great Easter hymns strongly and

sincerely. I feel as though worshipers really listen to the scripture reading and message.

But we actually start celebrating before the service begins with the joy and exuberance of

children running to find their Easter eggs on our church lawn. And we continue our morning

after worship, when dozens and dozens of people gather on the south lawn to release their

butterflies or watch as butterflies are freed to fly among us and onto our butterfly garden. Lots

of people stay around to talk to friends, get acquainted with someone they just met, or merely

to soak in the celebration of the morning.

Still, the heart of the morning occurs in the sanctuary. The music and children’s ministry puts

together a special worship service. When worship begins with children’s liturgical dancing we

know we are in for a very inspiring morning. It continues with the proclamation that “Christ is

risen! He is risen indeed!” And more just keeps coming, from a rousing great Easter hymn to an

energetic contemporary Easter song to children’s choir and band and chancel anthems, solos,

ensembles. Our Easter worship service brims with joy and heart and faith and hope.

Easter morning is my favorite Sunday morning worship service of the year for all of these

reasons, and one more. It’s my favorite because I believe in the power of God to be greater

than the power of cold death and human sin. I believe love is greater than hate. I believe in

forgiveness more than vengeance. I believe that no matter how painful life is and how

powerless we feel, the Lord our God seeks to nurture and fulfill us.

Undoubtedly this can only take place ultimately and eternally on the far shore, in God’s

Promised Land, where there will be no more tears, no more hurt, no more death. That is true.

But Easter morning makes us feels as though we are just a little closer to grasping God’s great

love for us that we proclaim is revealed in Christ’s resurrection that splendid morning.

Better Policies

Nobody considers him or herself a stick in the mud, but few take a good look at what they believe is true or right. If we did we might see that we need to go in a different direction than the one we have been going. Paul says we should be willing to renew our mind, and cause a transformation in our lives, so that we can discern what God’s will is

for us today.

March 13 Luke 5:12-16

One Great Hour of Sharing

Daylight Savings Time begins

Now Is a Good Time

When is your time to pray? Do you have a time to let go of the swirling mass of your life and look for the light? We will take a look at when Jesus thought it was a good time to stop to smell the reality. He helps us understand what it’s like to live in a high pressure world, even though his wasn’t as high pressured or as fast. That’s because he himself was under a lot of pressure. Christ is a very powerful model of

the importance of praying now.

March 20 Luke 19:28-40

Palm Sunday

Find Your Comfort Zone

It’s great when the people love ya. But that affection and admiration can act like a magnet, pulling us away from who we are and what we really want to be about. People give up a lot in order to be in someone else’s comfort zone. We can forget our values and what’s important to us. That’s when we start getting uncomfortable. Find your comfort

zone. Stick with your values. Don’t trade them in for anything less.

March 27 Matthew 28:1-10

Easter

Breaking Out

Some moments are bigger than others. Some decisions weigh more heavily than others. Sometimes there ought to be fireworks and a sound track accompanying our choices. When Jesus is resurrected, Matthew makes sure we understand this is a HUGE deal. Earthquake, paralyzed soldiers, fiery angels in glory—these is no mistaking that something big has just happened. God was breaking out of the old

mold in a grand and glorious way that first Easter morning.

Prayer Requests

Prayer request forms are in the pews

and in the prayer box located in the

Rosser room. Please feel free to fill one

out if you have a special prayer you

would like the pastor to know about.

Help Us Update Our Records

We have found that some of the

information we have in our files is

out of date. Emails and phone

numbers have changed, people have

moved, and important dates (such as birthdays

and anniversaries) are missing.

If you have moved recently, please call or email

Sandi in the office and let us know your new

address. Call 561-395-9255 or email

[email protected].

Remember Your Florida Conference UCC Dues!

Church on the Hill is a member of the Florida

Conference of the United Church of Christ. Please

remember to give your 2016 UCC Florida

Conference dues. Dues are $15.00 for each

person in your family who is a member of this

church through joining or Confirmation. (The

increase to the dues was made after contribution

envelops were printed.) Thank you!

Rooting for Randall

Randall is currently undergoing

chemotherapy treatments due to a

new lesion found on her lung. This

will be a tough battle for Randall and

her mom. Please keep Randall and

her mother, Debbie, in your thoughts

and prayers.

During March we continue with the Gift Card

Collection. Gift cards (gas, supermarket, iTunes)

can be left at the Giving Tree in the Rosser room.

You Got Them, We Want Them

Send us your favorite Hymns

Pastor Tom wants to know our

congregation’s favorite hymns to help in our

regular worship planning.

Just call or email the office with a list of your

favorite hymns, and let us sing the songs

you love. [email protected],

Stewardship Update

2016 Contribution Pledges to Date

We have received 58 pledges so far for a total of

$145,274. Last year’s final figures were 59

pledges for a total of $130,015.

2016 Pledges are still being received.

Pledge cards are to be found in the Sanctuary and

in the Rosser room.

Friends of Bonita Tust and Loren Eyrich

We have created a memorial fund

honoring Loren and Bonita (Bonnie),

who needed physical assistance.

We will be cutting out some pew

sections to allow better inclusion for ALL, so that

wheelchairs, power chairs, perhaps baby

carriages can come into the sanctuary and have a

comfortable place to sit among other worshipers,

rather than hanging into the aisle or being stuck

in the far back.

To date we have received $1,112 for this fund. If

you want to assist with this in memory of Bonita

or Loren, please make your donation out to

“Church on the Hill” and write “Pew Fund IMO

(Loren and/or Bonnie)” on the memo line or on

your envelope. A plaque will be posted with both

names when the pew project is completed.

Thank you!

Church Directory Photo Shoot Is a “Wrap”

Sincere thanks to all who had

their photos taken over 3 days

in February. It was fun meeting

some pets, too! Our

photographers Ron and Joe did

a very professional job. The

directory will continue to be created and may

be complete by early summer. Stay tuned!

Volunteers helped make sitting

appointments on Sundays and checked

people in for their photo day: Doris and Rich

Harnist, Sue Moser, Judy and Larry Williams,

Lucille Bruno, Rachelle Wasserman, Leanne

Guilfu, Barbara Lacey, Kathryn Barlow and

Sarah Hugus.

Furniture movers were Lynn and Ken

Holloway.

Administrator Sandi Kilbride helped support

the project and directed volunteer Diana

Willard who printed the required labels.

Thank you all!

Did I fail to mention someone else who

helped? Please let me know!

We look forward to the finished product!

Valentine Concert

For the third year, our Director of

Music Ministry, Juan Mansilla,

treated us to a wonderful recital

following worship on Sunday,

February 14. With his wonderful

accompanist, Nicholas Wurster, Juan entertained

with his baritone vocal talents as he sang pieces

by a wide array of composers and lyricists. He

included a lovely piece he wrote, “Four Seasons.”

His pieces were from Gioachino Rossini, Franz

Schubert, Giacomo Puccini, Camille Saint-Saens,

Frederico Moreno Torroba, Leonard Bernstein,

Andrew Lloyd Webber, and Geroges Bizet. Juan

kindly provided the audience with a program and

translations of the lyrics, since he sang in five

languages. Juan’s encore was “My Funny

Valentine,” to round out a beautiful concert.

A free-will offering totaling over $500 will be

shared with the musicians, as well as our young

church friend struggling with cancer and the Pew

Memorial Fund.

What a fabulous treat for the 60 or more people

who enjoyed this special musical hour.

Our Vision Statement

Church on the Hill exists to equip people, from all

walks of life, to reach their God-given potential

and fulfill God’s plans for their lives.

News & Notes

52nd Annual Meeting

On Sunday February 21, Church on the Hill held

our 52nd Annual meeting. Approximately 70

members and friends attended. All received a

printed report of 2015 Income and Expense

Reports, 2016 budget, staff reports, reports from

Teams and other groups, and a statistics page.

In 2015, 16 new members joined! This was a net

gain of 5 since there were losses due to deaths,

transfers and other removals. We thank those

who have joined, most of whom are already

serving in various ways!

Pastor Tom gave an inspired “State of our

Church” presentation and awarded posthumously

to Loren Eyrich the Elizabeth Ehlers Faithful

Servant Award.

Two highlights of the meeting stand out:

A new member stepped up to accept nomination

as Children’s Education Team Leader. Thank you

Melissa Halsey!

The 2016 budget was amended after Faye

Flemister gave an impassioned statement on why

we should be more supportive of the wider United

Church of Christ, through our donations to Our

Church’s Wider Mission (OCWM). There was

discussion of support, but concern about our

already deficit budget. Before the vote in favor of

22 to 10, two other members each pledged $500

to support the $1000 increase to our budgeted

2016 missions expense - thank you to Joe Cogley

and Lee Rivollier!

It was a VERY successful meeting.

Meeting details will be included in the Minutes.

Someone who can take notes quickly and write

them into minutes is invited to step forward to

volunteer for officer position of Church Clerk,

which is currently vacant.

by Substitute Clerk, Sarah Hugus

L to R: Pastor Tom Lacey, John Fenner and Elizabeth

Ehlers. The Elizabeth Ehlers Faithful Servant Award

was given to Loren Eyrich posthumously .

Church on the Hill Is Going Even

More Social!

We have added Twitter and

Instagram pages to go along with

members to keep in touch with what is going on.

News and upcoming events will be posted, along

with memorable photos from these events. This is

also a great way to let the world know about the

good things going on at our church. It’s also a

chance to spread the gospel and make new

believers in Christ.

As I write this article, we are preparing for our March meeting

of the Adult Fellowship. We will have two guest speakers.

Hugh Stein will be our “Get to Know Your Neighbor” speaker,

and George Sinclair will talk about his volunteer work at

things neat.

There is a new Rummage Sale Committee this year. See the

separate article on page 8 in this issue of the Vantage.

decided to go to the Olive Garden in Boca Raton. Please mark your calendar to join us on

including election of officers for the coming year. If you are willing to serve as an officer and/or

help with the monthly planning next year, please speak with Audrey Michele or Grayce Esposito.

Eleanor Magee is still completing several Comfort Dolls. This continues to be a wonderful

outreach project for our Fellowship. If you can help cut patterns, sew, stuff bodies, make clothes
