POST COMMODORE’S BALL By Sue Glowacki

The Commodore’s Ball was held on March 4th honoring our new Commodore Tom Greif and 1st Mate Sandy. The theme this year was “Fiesta”. We had two tents set up, one as “Sandy’s Restaurant” which was decorated with colorful flowers and lights and the other as a store. Laurie Frederick made a Commodore’s Cantina with an authentic-looking bar with an old Mexican man in front of it. She also made a cactus that looked so real, one was afraid to touch it for fear of getting “pricked”! We had sombrero center pieces on each table and colorful striped table runners. Sandy McGreevy decorated the hors d’oeuvres tables which were beautiful. Punch was made and served by Judy Lavoy and Judy Shearer. Kathy Doll and Dottie Duquette were in charge of boutonnieres and corsages for our Officers and visiting Commodores’ wives. They also lined up “The Procession” for the entry into the Hall where the Port Charlotte High School JROTC arched their swords for the line to proceed under. Quite impressive! Master of Ceremonies was Larry Thombaugh who handles this role with mastery. Russ Denesha, our Roaster, did a spectacular job roasting our new Commodore. Ellie Wikle said the prayer. Our photographer was Pam Weast, thank you Pam. Food was catered by Gary Miller and the band was “Twice as Nice”.The Ball Committee thanks everyone involved with making our Ball a “First Class Act”. Thanks to Jerry Belanger for making our front entrance outstanding again this year.To our new Commodore and 1st Mate, we wish you a great year with few problems, many smiles and much laughter. From everyone on the Ball Decorating Committee.

BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE REPORTby Susan Fulford

Congratulations to Faye Jones at 513 Clarion Place who is the winner of the Home of the Month for May. Faye is alone, but does a great job keeping her property looking nice. Be sure to take a look at the beautiful deck area she has on the canal side of the house.Unfortunately we are still unable to take orders for personal house signs because of ill health of our provider. We will let you know if we will be able to continue taking orders next fall. Beautification Committee is looking for someone to take over the beautification responsibilities. Since we now have Larry Porter as our master gardener, the committee no longer does the weeding, trimming and planting that we used to do. The only things we are responsible for now are selecting the Home of the Month winner from December through May and taking orders for house signs from November through April. Please email Sue Fulford at [email protected] of call 941-426-0657 if you are interested.Speaking of Larry Porter, I think everyone in Harbor Cove is pleased with the spectacular job he's been doing on the landscaping in the common areas. Our community has never looked so nice and we should all be proud to live here. If you see Larry, take time to tell him what a great job he's done. He's earned it. We hope everyone who's heading north have a safe trip and that all Harbor Cove residents have a good

and healthy summer. We'll look forward to seeing you all next fall.

NU PI ALPHA SORORITYBy Sondra Jones,President, 441-8410

We had a nice 30 year Celebration luncheon at Captains Table restaurant in April. It is time to say goodbye and have a safe and happy summer to everyone, we are looking forward to a fun filled fall.

"Members of the Nu Pi Alpha Sorority recently celebrated their 30th anniversary of charitable works, made possible through the support of the Harbor Cove community."

STAINED GLASS CLUB RAFFLE We were really thrilled to win the drawing for the beautiful Club creation: “Beach Sunset”. Thanks for all the time and artistry that went into this beautiful piece. We are looking for the right lighting for it and will issue an invitation to the Club to see it in its new home when we return in the Fall. Thank you again. Dale and Pat Detman

THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY PARTYBy Bonnie Erfourth

On March 26th, Harbor Cove celebrated 20 years of being a Resident-Owned Community. Twenty years ago, 1997, the Homeowner's Association began thirty-seven hectic days to raise enough interest and money to qualify for an 8.1 million dollar loan. All so they could call Harbor Cove their own.A “welcome” by Master of Ceremony, Tom Hanson and a prayer of thanks and continued guidance by Bonnie Erfourth opened the party. A Bob Evans dinner orchestrated by Pam Pearsall was served to over 250 people. The program was highlighted by a power-point history put together by Sue Hanson and narrated by Bob Meyers. The Master of Ceremony introduced the remaining Acquisition members, Lyle Erfourth, Leo Martin, and John Dzuiba. Bob Jansen was introduced as the representative from the first attempt to purchase Harbor Cove. Acknowledgment of the ROC past presidents and highlights of their years concluded the celebration. Memory picture boards and books were available for browsing. Thanks go to others that helped make this a memorable occasion.

HC REALTY NOTESBy Joy Steieman

Happy Spring Harbor Cove! To the many residents who have left our community for their home up north, I wish you a great summer! And to the residents who call Harbor Cove their permanent residence, I am glad you are here!Harbor Cove Realty has gotten off to a great start for 2017. As of this writing, there have been 15 sales and several new listings. Please remember to call me if you are thinking of selling your residence. I will come to your house and give you my thoughts on getting you the best price for your home. Remember, half of the commission you would pay as the seller, stays in Harbor Cove and helps pays for your amenities and assists in keeping your monthly HOA fee low. I work for no one but you and the community so you will have my full attention. The new house on 231 Blackburn has sold! Just in time as 231’s neighbor has arrived. Hopefully, it will be available for viewing soon. If you or you know someone looking for a brand new house, please call me, I am happy to share the details I have. It is a beautiful home. Just because the weather will be getting a lot warmer and a lot of residents and guests have headed up north, summertime is still a very good time to sell your home. Buyers are looking for the perfect paradise home to hang their flip flops during the winter months. So if you are waiting til the fall/winter season to sell, think again. If you and your house are ready to place on the market, call me, let’s get it on the market now!

THANK YOU, HARBOR COVE R.O.C.By Jim Ringler, Pres. Leasholders Assoc.

First, ''THANK YOU" for inviting all property owners in Harbor cove to attend the 20th Anniversary Celebration. After all, we all make up this great community of Harbor Cove. 'THANK YOU" For the great program and presentation by Bob Meyer, of the acquisition over our first 20 years. "THANK YOU" TO THE 1996/1997 Harbor Cove Homeowners Association (HCHA) who had the belief in HARBOR COVE and took the time and made the effort to make this a Resident Owned Community. And believe me it took many hours of meetings to get enough signed up to complete the sale. Then it took many volunteers to complete this project, running the office etc. Enough for now. I get carried away when I get started talking about the many volunteers who are responsible for making this the great Community that is, in the first 20 years since it was established. I have seen many different R.O.C. Boards and Managers during this time period and to my knowledge they have all worked for the betterment of Harbor Cove. During my many years here in Harbor Cove, I have been a promoter of "The Golden Rule", Do unto others as you would have them do unto you ". If we all follow this sincerely, all our problems "minor as they are" would be greatly diminished. Follow the rules and may God Bless You All.

WITH DEEP APPRECIATIONMyself and family would like to thank the entire Harbor Cove community for their cards and prayers during the illness and passing of my wife Deame Kay Fiddes. We met in England where I served with the United States Air Force and married on June 10, 1961. We had four children and a long and happy life that was cut short by her passing on March 27. Dee will be missed dearly. Thank You and God Bless Clark Fiddes

HCBC LADIES AUXILIARYBy Laurie Fredrick

On April 7, we held our last monthly meeting for this half of 2017 at Hurricane Charlie’s in Punta Gorda. A big thank you to Betsy Cundiff for handling the arrangements and for having

some nice door prizes. Congratulations to all those lucky winners! Only 182 days until our next half of the year begins on Friday, October 6 with a luncheon at a restaurant to be determined! I’ll let you know the details as soon as Ellie Wikle and Janet Kramer let me know them. Have a happy, safe, and most of all, a healthy summer. May Shirley Goodnest and Marcy follow you wherever you travel. (If you attended our lunch, you’ll know who I mean!)

PHOTO DIRECTORYBy Sue Hanson

All of the photo sessions for the new directory have wrapped up. We are now in the process of gathering all the information for the roster that will appear in the back of the directory. Contact information on all residents, not just those pictured in the directory, will be listed there. After this information is sent to Lifetouch it sets in motion the process of compiling the directory, sending us a proof to go over and correct, reviewing the information, returning the corrected copy to Lifetouch, printing the directory, and shipping the completed books to us. This all takes several weeks, so the directories will not be here until the end of May. I know you are all anxious to see the final result, but please be patient. Once the directories are received, they will be available to residents who are here at Tuesday ticket sales. For those of you who are snowbirds, you can pick up your copy when you return for the season. The on-line directory will be available as soon as Lifetouch finishes production, and there will be more information on this at that time. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all the volunteers who helped make the photo sessions a success. Susan Zornow coordinated the appointment

scheduling, registered dozens of people at Tuesday ticket sales, and helped plan the directory format. Dottie Duquette coordinated the greeters and spent countless hours filling in and helping out. And especially our greeters, who checked everybody in and gathered information, all while making every resident feel special and ready to be the perfect model. The directory would not be possible without you all.

HARBOR COVE FISHING CLUBBy Mark McGrath

This is the first newsletter in several months as I have been dealing with some family medical issues. We've had several fishing contests with Mario winning the last one with a 28 inch Snook. We are now doing month long contests for the largest catch, thus far Herb is in the lead this month with a 33 inch Cobia but there is still time for some larger catches. The Club had a great turn out for our First Fish Fry which was held on Friday April 7th. We opened this up to the Harbor Cove Community and very quickly sold out. We kept the total at 132 as this was our first attempt and we wanted to cook the fish fresh as individuals would come. The menu included a ½ pound of Cod dipped in a special beer batter, french fries, cole slaw, bread and butter and a drink. We had a lot of positive feedback from those that joined us for a beautiful afternoon on the patio. We had a lot of helpers that made the day a success which included Mike Clark, Mario and Sharon Compagnino, Steve Kondrchek, Herb and Lois Mehring, Bob McGreevy, John Potts, Doug Shearer, Bob and Mary Monroe, Guy Attanasio and Mark McGrath. So, thanks to all of you for a great day.

There were individuals that were wondering what the Club was all about so I thought I would include items that you can get through the Fishing Club:

• Education from Florida Fish and Game on what to catch and where

• Comradery amongst fellow fishermen • Education on the ever changing rules and

regulations...continued on page 13

CIVIC PRESIDENT’S REPORTBy Gale Kaczmarek

I woke up, got dressed and went for a morning walk. As I made my way around the Circle, Drive and Boulevard something was different today. What I noticed about my walk seemed to have come almost overnight; a calm has entered Harbor Cove. I thought about that last night while on my evening cart ride, I did not see 10 carts, 8 carts, 6 carts or even 4 carts on my ride, but only 3. There is less dog walking, bike riding, swimming and traffic going on. Mary, Jim, Don, Doree, Barb, Linda and so many others have left the Harbor, the sand dunes and the Sunshine State for the season. There’s no reason for a snowbird to stick around from May to November when back at home they have the same thing the Sunshine State offers them in the winter months.

As the season changes some things will come to an end for those of us who stay the summer and other things will begin! We never rest here in Harbor Cove, there is just less of us for awhile. The Summer Fun Committee will keep us moving and fill our time with awesome activities and events.

We have excellent news for the upcoming season! The Health & Wellness Committee is well underway to hosting the Heart, Health & Happiness Fair to be held on February 16, 2018. Put it on your calendar now and plan to attend! Along with the planning for this big event the committee is also planning to

• Matching those with boats and no boats• Special fishing places both on the river and in

the gulf• Tips on surf and land fishing• Catching your own bait fish • What kind of fishing gear to use and where• Discounts on certain fishing charters

If you are interested in joining or learning more about the club, you can contact Mario Compagnino or Mark McGrath. It’s That time of the year where some of our members head back to their northern homes. We will continue the Fishing Club meetings throughout the summer in the Rec Hall but the time will be moving away from Sunday night so keep posted for the change.

revive the monthly Blood Pressure Clinics here in the park along with many other health related clinics to help keep us all strong, fit and healthy. Look for these clinics to start sometime in the fall. More news will follow.

Civic is looking to assist the different parties that are put together to benefit the residents in Harbor Cove in each plat, state, etc. Whether you are currently chairing, plan to, or are thinking about chairing one of these parties, we will have an open discussion later in the fall. It would be helpful to email me with your information so you will be on the list to be contacted when this discussion will take place. Please send me an email while you are thinking about it at [email protected]. Include your name, phone number, party type and any questions or comments. Questions and comments will be reviewed over the summer and at addressed at the open discussion.

That’s it for this month and I wish you all a magnificent May!!!

Not All Roofers Are Created Equal! When choosing a business to do work on your home it is important to consider all the factors. Sometimes the cheapest option is not the best. Keep these tips in mind the next time you choose a service provider, especially a roofer.

How Many Years in Business? This demonstrates expertise in the field. If a warranty is involved it shows the company’s ability to stand behind it. If a company has been around for a long time, it is probably for a good reason.

Is There a Physical Location or Just a PO Box?We would not suggest you do business with someone who only has a PO Box as an address. This could indicate that they are not an established business.

Who is Doing the Actual Work? Are They Licensed & Insured?Does the company use subcontractors or their own employees? Employees tend to me more reliable because the business owner holds them accountable day-to-day versus subcontractors who can come and go. Verify the company is a licensed roofer and properly insured for any circumstances.

Consider More Than The Price!A roof is a durable product meant to last for years. When it comes to durable goods for your home like roofs, air conditioners, windows, etc. who installs them can be an important factor. Remember the old adage “Good work isn’t cheap...Cheap work isn’t good...”
