A Message from the Chairman

FoundationsSpecial 2005 Annual Report Edition

Spring 2006

The culture of philanthropy

is alive and well at Northeast

Health. You do not have to look

far within our system to know

that while the dollar total

matters ... what matters even

more is that our supporters

continue to care about helping others. The Foun-

dation has numerous commitments from within

the Northeast Health family that enable us to

strengthen our broader community efforts. We

can be proud of our “family members” who have

helped set the pace for others.

As you will see in this edition of Foundations,

we are bustling with activity. The support of our

family and friends truly makes a difference.

Thank you to all who have made our many suc-

cesses possible. What a great 12 months the

Foundation has had – exciting and productive!

Read on to see a few examples of the many gifts

we have received.

John M. Scarchilli

Chairman, Northeast Health Foundation

A Tribute to their Grandparents

For newlyweds Rachel and Patrick Fazioli,

their wedding favors held a much greater signifi-

With charitable giving a family affair, it wasn’t

surprising when Julie and her family chose to make

a monetary contribution to Samaritan’s Hospice

Care Enhancement Fund. Julie, a 20-year employee

of Samaritan, explained that they chose to give to

the hospice fund because it allows her and her

family to witness “their donation dollars in action.”

Beverwyck Resident Annual Scholarship

Award Program

The residents of Beverwyck, The Eddy’s

independent and assisted living retirement com-

munity in Slingerlands, realize the importance of

higher education and the significant difference it

makes in an individual’s life and the community in

which they live. That’s why, a couple of years ago,

they decided to establish an annual employee

scholarship award program. Through the thought-

ful generosity of Beverwyck residents, employees

of the Beverwyck community, who might otherwise

not have the opportunity to further their education,

are provided scholarship funds to help them fulfill

their dreams.

The scholarship is funded from donations

received from Beverwyck residents and from

proceeds obtained from the Employee Auction.

Awards of $1,000 are distributed annually to

individuals embarking upon a course of study in

an accredited education program up to a period of

four years. Currently, Beverwyck residents have

raised an astonishing total of more than $50,000

and have awarded this scholarship to three

deserving staff members.

cance than the ordinary tasty treat or scented

candle. Preserving the memory of Amelia DeNice,

Rachel’s grandmother and honoring Patrick’s

grandfather, Joseph Bouchard, was something that

meant so much more. In place of favors, guests

received a card at their seat announcing a dona-

tion had been made in their name to Samaritan

Hospital’s Cancer Treatment Center and the

Marjorie Doyle Rockwell Center.

To Rachel, it was a way of having her grand-

mother with her on her wedding day, and for

Patrick a way of showing his admiration for his

grandfather. “It’s important that young people give

back to the community and if you can tailor your

donation to a specific organization, one that holds

value to you, that’s all the more reason to donate,”

Rachel says. “I think this is a new trend for wed-

dings. It’s a nice touch from the bride and groom.”

Rachael and Patrick are both charitable

people who grew up around families that gave

back to the community. “I’ve always had a soft

spot in my heart for people in need,” she says.

What appealed to Rachel most about Northeast

Health is she was able to make her donation to

two very specific affiliates. “Northeast Health is

local, it’s right in your backyard and it’s a

great organization!”

Hospice Care Enhancement Fund at

Albany Memorial & Samaritan Hospitals

Working in partnership with The Community

Hospice, our compassionate and skilled nursing

staffs at both Albany Memorial & Samaritan

hospitals provide the utmost in palliative care so

that our patients are as comfortable as possible

while they are with us. Thanks to the generosity

of contributors to our Hospice Care Enhancement

Fund, we can ensure that patients and families

who come to us in the future will receive this

same comfort and care.

Julie Weeden, a nurse on Samaritan’s sixth

floor hospice unit, and her family have always

been very active with community charities. She,

husband Bruce and three sons — 14, 12 and 9 —

participate in many regional fundraising events

such as the “Making Strides for Breast Cancer

Walk” and “Fast and Famine for World Vision.”

A cancer survivor, Julie marked her 40th birthday

by participating in a walk to raise funds for cancer.

A Message from Karl Coté,Vice President, Northeast Health Foundation

The Compass Society is off

to a great start! We formed

this legacy society to honor

those who have planned a

future gift to benefit Northeast

Health and its affiliates. Why?

We found that oftentimes

individuals would include Northeast Health in

their wills, but we would not find out about it

until it was too late for us to thank them for their

generous gift.

Now that we have the Compass Society, we

encourage people to notify us when they have

included us in their estate plans, so we can thank

them for their gift today. Such gifts include:

• a bequest to Northeast Health in your will

• a charitable gift annuity, where you receive

income for life

• naming Northeast Health as a beneficiary

of a trust or life insurance policy

Our planned giving committee met in January

and is currently developing educational materials

that will help explain the many benefits available

to potential donors when making a planned gift.

I am very excited about the Compass Society

and the partnership it forms with the people in

our community ... people like you who are helping

Northeast Health provide the very best in health-

care, community services and supportive housing

for our family, friends and neighbors.

If you have already included Northeast

Health in your will or in another planned gift,

“thank you!” Please give me a call at 271-5025

so we can enroll you in the Compass Society, or

if you would like more information about planned

giving. I would be happy to discuss the many

benefits available to you through a planned gift

to Northeast Health.

What is the Compass Society?

It is a legacy society honoring and including

those who have planned a future gift, a “de-

ferred” or “planned” gift, to benefit The Eddy,

Albany Memorial Hospital, Samaritan Hospital,

or any affiliate of Northeast Health.

How do I benefit?

By giving a planned gift, you could receive:

• income throughout retirement

• savings on capital gains taxes

• savings on income taxes

• savings on estate taxes

• the ability to take low-yielding assets

and create a high-yielding flow of income

• the opportunity to make a life-affirming gift

to Northeast Health or any of its institutions

or programs

• the chance to direct your assets to our local

mission of healing, using your funds which

otherwise may have gone out of the area

to pay taxes

Do I need to be wealthy to be a philanthropist?

You don’t have to be wealthy. And, there

are real financial benefits available. You can

create a legacy for you and your family that

will continue your good work for years to come.

What can I give?

While many gifts are made with cash,

stocks, bonds, mutual funds or retirement plans,

you can also make a gift in the form of appreci-

ated real estate, fine art or other assets.

What are examples of “deferred gifts”?

A deferred gift can be a bequest in your

will, or a gift that pays you income for life,

and then, upon your death, benefits Northeast

Health or any of its affiliates.

The Compass Society: Charting the Coursefor Northeast Health

What gift to Northeast Health could also

provide income to me/us for life?

There are several ways to do this. The size

of your gift or the type of asset you use will

suggest which may benefit you the most. To

start, we would discuss your needs and then

select an appropriate way to meet those needs

and match your wishes. For example, for

“deferred” gifts of $10,000 (or more), people

often choose a charitable gift annuity, a contract

between you and the Northeast Health Founda-

tion which arranges to pay you a fixed income

for life. For deferred gifts larger than $100,000,

it may be advantageous to use a charitable

remainder trust, or other types of trusts.

What can I fund it with?

It can be funded with cash, appreciated

securities, or other assets such as fine art or

real estate.

What rate of income will I receive?

The payments to you are based on rates

recommended by the American Council on

Gift Annuities. They are determined at the

time you make your charitable gift. Current

examples for an individual (annuities can

also be created for two) are:

Age Rate

75 7.1%

80 8.0%

85 9.5%

90+ 11.3%

Can you share a personalized example?

Yes. We can easily show you the income and

tax benefits based on your personal circum-

stances. Please ask for a confidential illustration.

Call us at 274-0190. And thank you for considering

a gift that also provides income to you for life.

The Leora Belknap Sock Fund for Memorial

Hospital & Samaritan Hospital Schools of Nursing

An RN, who has worked in the Northeast

Health network with many nursing students,

decided to reestablish the legacy left by Leora

Belknap, RN. Miss Belknap had a rewarding 40-

year career at Samaritan Hospital, 20 of them

spent as director of the School of Nursing. Miss

Belknap started the “sock fund” to assist students

who were in need of cash to help them through a

difficult time. Whenever it was time to replenish

the fund, she would simply state to staff, “The

sock is empty!” Before long, staff members would

contribute funds to assure that there were suffi-

cient dollars in this emergency stash. She truly

cared, and through her caring, she offered many

of her colleagues an opportunity to show their

care and concern to needy students. The donor

wishes to continue this

tradition first introduced

by Miss Belknap so many

years ago. Donations to

the fund will assist

students who need cash

to get through a financial

crunch. Funds given to

needy students will be

considered gifts ... repay-

ment will not be expected,

and staff and faculty of

the Schools of Nursing will recommend students

for gifts from this fund. The Foundation and the

donor are working in partnership to generate

additional dollars to ensure these “socks” con-

tinue to be available at both schools!

Cuisine Magic 2006 ... A Culinary Delight

While it’s always important to look ahead, it is

equally important to honor and embrace our tradi-

tions, heritage and the accomplishments of the past.

For generations now, Albany Memorial Hospital

has been strengthened and championed by the work

and generosity of the Slingerland family.

In the last century, there was not a single

capital campaign or need at Albany Memorial

Hospital that did not benefit from the leadership

of Freddie Slingerland, Donald Slingerland, and/

or Frederick McDonald. That heritage continues

today. In fact, we’re pleased that Frank

An Enduring Legacy: The Slingerland FamilySlingerland, representing the next generation, has

now joined the Northeast Health Foundation

board of directors.

The Frederick McDonald Trust, originally

established by Mr. McDonald to perpetuate his

generosity to the institutions and needs he sup-

ported in Albany, has again helped Albany Memo-

rial, this time to benefit the campaign for the new

$14 million expansion/renewal of the emergency

department. The Bank of America is the trustee

for Mr. McDonald’s trust. The Donald Slingerland

Charitable Trust has also supported the project,

as has Frank, personally.

The essential work that the Slingerland/

McDonald family has accomplished for many

generations continues. It is a legacy that we at

Northeast Health Foundation value and of which

we are ever mindful.

There are other legacies, established by other

families, individuals and corporations that are

also of lasting worth. We also honor them and

thank them.

Together, let us create one for your family.

In December, Eddy Memorial Geriatric

Center memorialized former resident Jeannette

Earls with a plaque in gratitude and recognition

of her $900,000 bequest to the skilled nursing

facility. A math teacher, Jeannette started out

teaching in a one-room school house before

moving to Delmar and teaching in the

Bethlehem School District for 34 years.

Remembering Jeannette Earls

L to r, Peter Young, vice presidentand administrator of Eddy MemorialGeriatric Center, Florence Bichteman,Jeannette’s niece, Bill Bichteman, andJo-Ann Costantino, CEO, The Eddy.

Her generous donation has helped

Eddy Memorial Geriatric Center

expand its facility which will benefit

the community for generations

to come.

Gala 2006Jewels in the Night, the patient care division’s

Gala 2006, was held on January 14 at the Albany

Donors to the new Eddy Alzheimer’s Center at

Hawthorne Ridge in East Greenbush, as well as the

Marjorie Doyle Rockwell Center in Cohoes, will have

the opportunity to remember a loved one through

a unique new technology being introduced at

both communities.

Walls of Memory will showcase “wonder-

ful people, wonderful memories” through a

high-definition plasma display and interactive

touch-screen. Viewers can then read a story

about a loved one being honored and see a

photo of that person. There will also be a

dedication from the donor.

The husband of one of the first to be hon-

ored on the Walls of Memory recently wrote,

“Fortunately for us ... Marjorie Doyle Rockwell

and some others provided a sizable endowment

that allowed a facility to be built, styled after

the care they knew at home: they established it

to fulfill our needs for care for our loved ones

who lived with Alzheimer’s. It was a godsend

to those of us who needed it. Now, it is our

turn. And I write this for my wife, Jean.”

Donors who give or pledge $5,000 or more

to establish the new Eddy Alzheimer’s Center

in East Greenbush, or to support the work of

Walls of Memory to Honor Loved OnesMarjorie Doyle Rockwell Center or any other compo-

nent of Eddy Alzheimer’s Services, will have the

opportunity to share the story and picture of someone

they wish to honor on the Wall of Memory.
