Homework Solutions:Like an actor rehearsing his lines or a batter

working on his swing, your child does homework topractice what he learns in school. And if he’s like mostyoungsters, homework brings occasional challenges. Here are solutions to common problems he might face.

Getting StartedWhen your child gets home from school or after-school care, he might want to

relax for a little while, or he may want to jump right in and work. Have him try eachmethod for one week and keep track of how it goes. He could write notes in each day’scalendar square. Even with the cold weather outside, there’s nothing that can warm you up more than a great bigsmile from someone, especially a child. February is National Dental Health month. Usually, thehealth room goes into second grade classrooms. Instead, of this lesson, a puppet show on dentalcare and dental awareness will be offered to all 1st and 2nd grade students. This free show willcome to Parkway Manor on Thursday, April 19,2012. We are looking forward to meeting puppetsFlossie, Wally Water and Tuba Toothpaste picturedbelow.

Good dental health is not only important formaking your smile beautiful. Your teeth providestructural support for the face muscles, are part ofthe digestive system, and are essential for speech.Taking care of your teeth helps prevent plaque, aclear film that sticks to your teeth. This, along withthe bacteria and food particles left on your teethsoftens the enamel on the teeth until a hole, orcavity, forms.

Students in 3rd grade, kindergarten and thosenewly enrolled to the school are required by law toshow proof of a dental exam before May 1, 2012. Ifyour child has not yet fulfilled this requirement, please make an appointment and inform the healthroom of the appointment date. If your child hasalready been to the dentist, please return therequired form to the health room as soon aspossible.

Healthfully,Judith Herb, RN, CSN

For a lifetime of smiles, keep on brushing!

HEALTH ROOM TIPS

It’s important to encourage your children

to take care of their teeth by following these steps:

Brush at least twice a day, after breakfast

and before bedtime. Brush more often if

possible, especially after eating sweet

snacks.

Brushing properly breaks down plaque.

Brush all of your teeth, not just the front

ones. Spend time on the sides and in the

back of your teeth. Spend at least 2-3

minutes brushing.

Use fluoride toothpaste which

strengthens the enamel on teeth to prevent

cavities.

Be sure to use a toothbrush with soft

bristles and apply only a pea sized amount

of toothpaste to the brush. You should get

a new toothbrush about every three

months.

Learn how to floss your teeth and do it

daily.

Visit the dentist regularly-every 6 months

is recommended.

Eat a lot of fruits and vegetables and

limit the amount of sugary foods you eat.

Wear a protective mouth guard when

participating in sports.

Congratulations to Fifth Grade Students Selected to be Peer Mediators!

The Peer Mediation Program provides an opportunity for students to findpeaceful solutions to their conflicts with a little help from peer mediators.Working out problems requires listening and making compromises which are skills allstudents can learn and benefit from in life. Children are encouraged to go to the“red shirts” on the playground, should they need a little help with solving a conflict. We are proud of the job our peer mediators do at Parkway Manor School.

STUDENT COUNCILVP CORNER

By Seth FineStudent Council Vice President

For those of you who don’t know who I am let me introduce myself. I am Seth Fine and I amyour Student Council Vice President. Every month I will be writing an article to keep youinformed of what Student Council is doing.

Student Council has been very busy. We completed our elections for this year and have a wholenew board and new classroom representatives. Our first project for the year was collectingitems for the 6th Street Shelter. On December 16, student council delivered hundreds of itemssuch as brooms, diapers, paper towels and so much more. They were so happy to receive all theitems especially right before holidays. We were given a tour of the shelter’s facility. We all hada great time learning about all the things the shelter does for people.

On January 27th Parkway Manor had its annual Bingo Night. We all had a terrific time at BingoNight and bidding on tricky trays and classroom baskets. Student Council was once againresponsible for Coat Check. This year we donated the money we collected to several differentlocal animal charities. I hope everyone had fun.

Student Council is looking forward to a great year. Keep your eyes open for our exciting eventsin February like The 100 Days of School Celebration, Lollipop Sale and Daffodil Days.

Box Top Contest!Deadline to Submit Box Tops is February 13th!
