A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL SUNRISE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL KIMBERLY AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT April, 2019 Principal Reflections April 2019 I hope that everyone enjoyed some time relaxing and having fun over Spring Break. We have less than 7 weeks of school left, so if you’re like me, you will start to notice that the pace is beginning to pick up as we approach the end of the year. In preparation for the summer, I thought that I would take this opportunity to share a bit of the thinking I have been lobbing around and remind you of some great opportunities that lie ahead. Some of you are aware that our staff has been exploring a shift in the way we accomplish our goals of teaching and learning. By that I mean, that although we are still driven by the content that we want our students to learn, we are ultimately working toward a scenario in which our students are less passive recipients, but rather “owners” of their learning. In the spirit of creating ownership, our teachers have been exploring and studying the needs of their students through a somewhat different lens this year. All of our teachers were trained in college that developing metacognition (thinking about your own thinking) in students is important. This year, we have taken a very concerted and purposeful path to enhance our practices with this goal. When I think about this, I am reminded of a cartoon from Peter Johnston’s “Opening Minds - Using Language to Change Lives”. In the cartoon, the parent is telling the child:, “Honey, when you grow up I want you to be assertive, independent and strong-willed. But while you’re a kid, I want you to be passive, pliable, and obedient.” The joke is, if we know what we want for our students in the future, then we should be prepared to allow for the emergence of those assets while they are our students. I am referring to this as an educator, but the same sentiment is true as a parent. I must allow for this as a parent. To be fair, it is much easier to just follow a script and expect results. Unfortunately, this sort of expectation does not tend to create sustainable learning. As we interact with our children, it is crucial for us to position them as participants in their own development. A simple example may be, when asked for help solving a problem, to respond by asking what they know already and to ask what they still need to know. This may seem overly simple to you, but if you try it, I am confident that you will see greater growth than by simply solving the problem for the child. Please continue to watch your child’s mail and email as we approach the end of the school year. Teacher Appreciation Week is the week of May 6-10. I hope that you will find a way to help show appreciation for the staff here at Sunrise. They do so much to advance the intellectual lives of all of our children. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at Sunrise (954-1822) or by email, [email protected]. SEAN FITZGERALD

Principal Reflections April 2019

I hope that everyone enjoyed some time relaxing and having fun over Spring Break.

In the cartoon, the parent is telling the child:,

“Honey, when you grow up I want you to be assertive, independent and strong-willed. But while you’re a kid, I want you to be passive, pliable, and obedient.”

The joke is, if we know what we want for our students in the future, then we should be prepared to allow for the emergence of those assets while they are our students.

STATE TESTING~ FORWARD EXAM 3rd & 4th Grade

It is getting to that time of year when state assessments will be starting. This year, the Forward Exam testing dates for Sunrise 3rd and 4th graders run from April 1st to May 7th. Both 3rd and 4th grades have designated days during this time to take specific portions of the assessment. As in the past, we ask that families try to avoid testing times for appointments, vacations, etc. Missed tests will need to be made up during our make-up date/time. More information will be sent home soon. Thank you for your cooperation.

The Stinger Student Ambassador Award is given to a representative from each classroom who is a good role model, tries their best, helps others and leads by example. This in turn, displays our Community Values of Respect, Kindness, Honesty and Responsibility.

The Ambassador Award given by classroom teachers this month goes to students who

demonstrated these values by going above and beyond. Students had their pictures taken and

are displayed on the “Passport to Leadership” Bulletin Board in the main lobby.

Do Something Big!!! Join Band! Woodland Intermediate Band

April 2019 For all Mapelview and Woodland incoming 5th Graders

Dear Parents/Guardian, You will soon have a 5th grader in your midst. When students enter the 5th grade, they have the opportunity to begin instruction on a band instrument. As children grow, they need ways to express themselves individually as well as in a group. Playing in the band will provide the challenge to do both. Also, a child who learns to play an instrument learns discipline and cooperation with others. Band is something that your child can be a part of from 5th grade through high school. Any students entering the 5th grade in the fall can be in the band program. However, they must enroll soon. Band instruction begins in the month of August for two weeks. The dates of instruction are Aug. 5 – Aug. 16. Band Camp will be held the first week at J.R. Gerritts Middle School. The second week of camp will be held at your respective school. Students are able to choose from the following instruments: flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, trombone, French horn, baritone horn, tuba and percussion.

If your child is interested in being in the band next year, please complete the bottom of this letter by Wednesday, May 1 and return it to your classroom teacher.

Instrument try-outs will be starting early in May. Only those students who have returned their slip will be allowed to try out instruments. Together we will be able to make a choice as to what instrument would be suited for your child. Physical adaptability, previous musical experience as well as band instrumentation are the overall factors in the selection process. There are no beginning band classes beyond 5th grade. Therefore, now is the time to start band if your child is at all interested in being a part of this program. An important informational meeting will be held at each school before Open House. You and your child should plan on attending this meeting. Along with enrollment forms being handed out, instruments will be demonstrated and information on how to get an instrument will be discussed. After the band meeting, please stay for the open house. Hope to see you there! Band Directors: Ms. Shimek--Woodland [email protected]

TEENS WITH YOUTH SPORTS DAY AT KHS INDOOR FACILITY

Attention Elementary School Parents,

We have a great opportunity for your children to build connections with the high schoolers in the Kimberly community! On May 11th, the indoor training facility at Kimberly High School will be hosting a Teens with Youth Sports Day. This is a day where students will play games, and build connections throughout the community. Children will choose two of the four sports offered (tee-ball, soccer, football, volleyball), and they will be led through various games, drills, and activities by high schoolers who play those sports at KHS! This day will also include a group game of kickball, as well as a snack for all attendees. This event is free and open to any first through fourth grader in the Kimberly community who fills out the forms below. If your child is interested in attending, please fill out the corresponding form before May 1st. The forms will close after receiving 60 responses, so it is first come first serve.
