A Prayer for Workers
O glorious Joseph! Who concealed your incomparable and regal dignity of custodian of
Jesus and of the Virgin Mary under the humble appearance of a craftsman and provided
for them with your work, protect with loving power your sons, especially entrusted to you.
You know their anxieties and sufferings, because you yourself experienced them at the
side of Jesus and of His Mother. Do not allow them, oppressed by so many worries, to
forget the purpose for which they were created by God. Do not allow the seeds of
distrust to take hold of their immortal souls. Remind all the workers that in the fields, in
factories, in mines, and in scientific laboratories, they are not working, rejoicing, or
suffering alone, but at their side is Jesus, with Mary, His Mother and ours, to sustain
them, to dry the sweat of their brow, giving value to their toil. Teach them to turn work
into a very high instrument of sanctification as you did. Amen.
This beautiful prayer was composed by Pope Saint John XXIII (1958-63). It places all workers under the patronage
of Saint Joseph the Worker, and asks for his intercession so that we may regard our work as a means of
growing in holiness.

Dear Parents and Members of our Sacred Heart School community, Having conducted quite a number of enrolment interviews for children looking at entry into Sacred Heart for next year, the common thread that people say they are looking for, and which they know they will find at Sacred Heart is that feeling of community.

By definition, a community is a social unit of any size that shares common values. And as a Catholic community by definition the values we hold as common are those of the Catholic faith. Even for families who are not of our faith background, they tell me that they can see that what we have is truly unique, tangible, and that the values which underpin all that we do are ones they share with us and within which they wish their child to grow and learn. That’s certainly not a put-down of our state school communities, but rather an acknowledgement that as parents and teachers who make a conscious decision to belong to a Catholic school community, we are recommitting every day to the values which underpin this way of life. For that to be real it must mould our actions, our words, and our relationships. I can’t begin to tell you how gratifying it is as a school leader when a family new to our school says, ‘Yes, this feels right for my child’ (and it’s happened twice in the last week). Let us recommit every day to strive to build ‘community’ within our school, so that we welcome those who are looking for a caring school community for their child, and that we strive to ensure that in all we do, the catholicity of our community is always prominent. CATHOLIC IDENTITY PROJECT – LAST WEEK
I thank the small number of parents who have attended to the task of completing the ‘Catholic Identity’ questions in the ’Leuven’ survey. Our parent response rate is rather low so I appeal to you to find the time to attend to the survey and lend weight to the findings of the survey. Just reiterating that the results are anonymous but will be very useful to assist us to grow as a Catholic school community.
My extra incentive still stands - on the Friday of each week I will put all completed surveys ‘into the hat’ with two movie tickets up for grabs each week from those families who have returned their completion slip. The winners of draw this past week is the Gagen family. Their movie tickets will be heading their way by Tuesday. I’ll draw another family today and another on Wednesday (remembering that the draw closes this Wednesday). Please assist us by contributing to the results. ACTING A.P.R.E.
Whilst Gerald Shegog is Acting Principal in my absence for 5 weeks commencing next Friday, I have asked Mrs Maureen Cullip (Year 6 teacher) to fill the role of Acting Assistant Principal in Religious Education. Maureen has a wealth of experience in this role and will very capably lead the school community in this area for the 5 weeks. We welcome Mrs Kylie Basham to the role of Year 6 teacher for two days of each of those weeks that I am away. WE LOVE YOU MUM!
This Friday we will celebrate Mother’s day at Sacred Heart with a breakfast commencing at 7:30am provided by the parents of Year 2 Silver, followed by a special Mother’s Day Assembly commencing at 8:45am and organised by the Year 4 Maroon class. Make it a date and come along. PARENTS-IN-PARTNERSHIP – NUMERACY
You are invited to join Jo-Anne Downing and a team of teachers this coming Wednesday night for an information sharing session in the area of numeracy. Jo-Anne will lead you on a journey which will allow you to better understand the place of numeracy within our curriculum and assist you in your understanding of the strategies that your child may use in this area. Come along – 7pm in the School Library. SPORTS CLINICS
This year we are trialling something new in Term 2 sport for our Year 3 – 6 students. Rather than spend a lot of time each week travelling to, and watching other games in order for our teams to get a small amount of field time, we are spending time with our students in instructional clinics in Netball and in AFL. By learning the skills prior to encountering other schools on the Gala Days we hope to breed more success for our teams and enhance the children’s enjoyment of the games. The clinics started this week for the classes. ANZAC DAY COMMEMORATIONS – WITH MUCH THANKS
Thank you to the many students who marched on Monday as part of the ANZAC Day march here at Sandgate. Our large contingent was very noticeable and made me proud to lead such a fine group of students. Thanks too to the parents of Year 3 Silver for providing the workforce for the BBQ and Sno-cones after the march. (using our new Sno-cone machine – a recent purchase thanks to funding by the P & F Association). A great effort.
THANKS FOR THE GIFT!
Have you seen the transformation of the wall of the Library? Each year our Year 6 students raise money to then use to leave behind a memento of their time with us. The Year 6 class of 2015 wished us to use the funds to get a mural painted to beautify our school. And now it comes to fruition. With much thanks to our artist Rachel Saurini for sharing her talents with us. AND THANKS FOR YOUR PRESENCE
This coming Friday is School Secretary’s day, a day when we as a school community thank Amanda, Maree, Dell & Trish for the wonderful work they do in the office. Their days are as diverse as they come and yet they handle it with ease and with a smile. Our appreciation goes to them all for the way they keep the place running. Thanks Ladies. STAY HOME MONDAY
Don’t forget that Monday is another public holiday – so enjoy the second long weekend in a row. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
ANZAC Day is a day not of celebration but of national memory. It's a day when we learn, and learn again, of the horror of purposeless war. It is a day for looking after your mates, cherishing your home, your neighbourhood and family... It's a day for realising how rare and precious this wonderful country of ours is. (Bob Carr) Wishing you a great week as we work together for the benefit of our children. Sincerely,
Chris Chris Bathersby Principal
ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Sunday 1st May is the Feast of St Joseph the Worker. On the liturgical calendar St. Joseph has two feast
days. The first is 19th March — Joseph, the Husband of Mary. The second is 1
st May — Joseph, the Worker.
Pope John Paul II once stated “Saint Joseph is a spiritual man who shows tremendous strength and is great in faith, not because he speaks his own words, but above all because he listens to the words of the Living God. He listens in silence. And his heart ceaselessly perseveres in the readiness to accept the Truth contained in the word of the Living God,”
There is very little about the life of Joseph in Scripture but still, we know that he was the chaste husband of Mary, the foster father of Jesus, a carpenter and a man who was not wealthy. We also know that he came from the royal lineage of King David.
We can see from his actions in scripture that Joseph was a compassionate man, and obedient to the will of God. He also loved Mary and Jesus and wanted to protect and provide for them.
Since Joseph does not appear in Jesus' public life, at his death, or resurrection, many historians believe Joseph had probably died before Jesus entered public ministry.
Joseph is the patron of many things, including the universal Church, fathers, the dying and social justice. Source http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint.php?n=471

STUDENT COUNSELLOR
This week I invite each of us to make a special effort to take some time to have a little fun and relaxation with our family. You may like to ask all family members to turn the television off, put their mobiles, laptops, iPads, games newspapers etc. out of sight and focus completely on being together as a family. Spending a little time together without any focus on “gadgets” may encourage you to make a family decision to value arranging family time each weekend. When you share your family meal each Friday evening, you might discuss as a family what you will do together for a while over the weekend. Family meal times are a wonderful way to share time, especially when there are no electronic gadgets being used at the table.
Time passes quickly, so it is important to value spending time listening to family members, and enjoying sharing uninterrupted time together. If children know we adults are listening to them they will know they can speak to us and ask our advice when something is worrying them. This will be of great value when your children enter adolescence if they know you are there to listen to them when they need advice or encouragement.
Enjoy your family times this week.
Teresa.

LANGUAGES OTHER THAN ENGLISH (L.O.T.E.) - JAPANESE
Online Translation Websites - not for my assessment task please!
At the moment Year 6s and 5s are busy preparing for their oral presentations.
When the children are writing their role play script, I always tell them not to use online
translation websites. I emphasize to them that they are expected to use words and
phrases they learned this term and previously. Even though I tell them so many times,
there are always a few who use translation sites.
A computer is programmed with the basic rules of a language and is given a dictionary.
When text is entered, the computer translates it according to those rules and gives a
rough translation.
For example, I once asked students to write in Japanese "Mummy, could you please buy
me some lollies?". One student obviously used a web-based translation because their
translated sentence used the Japanese word for Egyptian Mummy instead of the
Japanese word for Mother.
Every single language has many exceptions to its rules and a web-based translation will
often end up with something that native speakers would never use in daily conversation.
There are many nuances in a language that are hard for a machine to translate. Machines
have problems with metaphors, and there are things like slang and different dialects that
even a native speaker can find difficult.
I wonder if the time will ever come when a machine can
translate perfectly?
Happy learning Japanese.
